The presentation of the food is nothing over the top, but almost every dish delivered in terms of flavor (which is the most importantly part in my opinion).
What I enjoyed
– Fresh oysters are good (though idk why they were not shucked completely)
– Crab tostada is a favorite
– Beef carpaccio is of great quality (meat does not taste frozen nor watery, perfect temperature and texture as it should be)
What could have been better
– The onion soup was too salty for me. The cheese was overly smoked, which disrupted the flavor profile.
The service is attentive and not snobby ✨ They were accommodating of our gluten-free needs. They also offered to split our one order of onion soup into two bowls (easier for sharing) which is very thoughtful.
A lovely choice for special occasions.
But definitely worth to try the food.
– Mexican food
– Seafood is a great option.
Taberna del León is one of those rare places where tradition, consistency, and excellence converge. Tucked inside the south of CDMX, this restaurant has operated with the highest standards since day one—and has never wavered.
The food is exquisite—elegant yet comforting, rooted in classic flavors but elevated with finesse. Every dish feels intentional, from the perfect seasoning to the thoughtful presentation. The service is just as remarkable: warm, attentive, and discreet, a true reflection of hospitality done right.
It’s astonishing that this gem remains slightly under the radar considering it belongs to one of Mexico’s most renowned culinary groups. It may not have the flash of some newer spots, but don’t let that fool you—Taberna del León is a masterclass in consistency and culinary rigor. A true jewel in the crown of its celebrated chef, and a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic, elevated dining experience in the city.
Desserts are fantastic, the tiramisu is a classic, but their seasonal options are probably better. I recommend you trying a Taylor’s 20 yr or Ramos Pintos 30 yr with your dessert. You always have as an entrance a courtesy and a petit four after your meal.
In my opinion this restaurant has been maintained for so long because they have tried keeping their quality of food and service in high standard so their chances of let you disappointed are quite low. This is a must restaurant of Mexico City.
Last December (2015) they had dinners with jazz sessions during winter, it was awesome.
