This is a Chicago classic. CERTIFIED. One of my absolute favorite places to eat in this city. Don’t settle for anything else.

Al’s #1 Italian Beef is a true Chicago classic and absolutely lives up to its legendary reputation. From the moment you walk in, you can smell the rich aroma of slow-cooked beef and fresh Italian spices that sets the tone for the whole experience.

The star of the show is, of course, the Italian beef sandwich. The meat is incredibly tender, thinly sliced, and packed with flavor. Whether you go sweet peppers, hot giardiniera, or fully dipped, every bite delivers that perfect balance of savory, juicy, and spicy that Chicagoans swear by. The bread holds up surprisingly well despite the juicy goodness, and the portion size is more than satisfying.

Service is quick and efficient, exactly what you want from a classic counter-style spot. The staff keeps things moving even during busy times, and the energy of the place adds to the charm.

If you’re visiting Chicago or even if you’ve lived here your whole life, Al’s is one of those must-have food experiences. It’s messy, it’s flavorful, and it’s unmistakably Chicago. Highly recommend stopping in for an authentic taste of the city.

We had to go as it’s iconic chicago but the place is dirty and grimy. Food was overrated. We tried the original beef and the polish sausage. Fries tasted like they haven’t changed the oil in months. Staff was curt and unfriendly.
EDIT: the owner wonders why I left a review if I’ve never been there. I was there LAST NIGHT. Will add a photo to show what I had

I was excited to go but then there was a piece of plastic (sharp) in my food. I bit into the sandwich and pulled it out of my mouth. It was in the meat. Manager said it was from a kitchen tool they used to cut the meat and said he took care of it after I showed it to him. It probably would have cut me up. They gave me a replacement sandwich. Sad sad sad and disappointed.

A bit slow, but the incredible Italian chopped beef sandwich was worth the wait. It was game day for the Cubs, so the wait was understandable. I liked both the sweet and spicy peppers in it to cut through the beef. I didn’t get it dipped this time, but have had it before and personally prefer it dipped, but my gf prefers otherwise cos it gets messy.

These Sammy’s are !! Really good meat that’s well seasoned but not over the top. You’ve gotta go wild style with both hot and sweet peppers and don’t forget the cheese. Delicious!

Always bought Al’s beef. Went there yesterday and bought two beef sandwiches. One was plain and the other hot gardinera and both dipped. When I got home the plain beef was about 4 inches.snallest sandwich ever. The other didn’t have gardinera but the out a bunch of red pepper flakes. Not sure I’m going back.

Best Italian beef! When I walked in, they were not busy at all and I ordered right away. The sandwich was ready in less than 10 minutes and it was really good. It was a good amount of beef and I got the sandwich dipped and it had a lot of the beef juice on it as well. It was extremely good, flavorful and was a great size. And the fries were extremely crispy and flavorful as well.

Purchased 2 Italian Beef – I’ll NEVER order from them again! Food tastes OLD. The dipping gravy had a half inch of greese on top. Delivery didn’t follow instructions – bad experience all around

Worth the hype

The meat is delicious, the jus elevates everything, and the sweet peppers makes it perfect. Stopped by with a good appetite and didn’t realize we would want to eat 2 or 3 of these in a row. What an addictive flavor set.

Went with a few friends, it’s a little pricy (don’t remember the exact price) but so worth it!

I got this regular jumbo (wet) with sweet peppers, the seating is pretty packed usually but when you find a spot its a vibe for a quick snack and less so on a date or group hang!
