The world doesn’t need another café. You know this. We know this. And yet, here we are. Why? Because what the world does need is connection. People are busy. We spend a majority of our days bumping into one another without noticing. Our eyes are on phones and our noses in laptops, working, staying busy, and attempting some semblance of relationship. Truth is, we’re not actually connecting at all. Not authentically. We believe that people need a more genuine type of contact… Something real. Public Square is a place for exactly that: a place to see and be seen, a place to hear and be heard, and a place to serve and be served. We do this in three ways: coffee, culture, and cause.

Espresso & unique light fare offered in a cool, art-lined spot with a sidewalk patio.

Let me start by saying that the food and coffee is amazing. The lattes are made with pride and the food is unique and delicious. This place is busy for a reason. Its a smaller place for the amount of business they have. That is not a bad thing, it just means that you have to patient. The Uber butter and the scones are my favorite. 10/10 for creativity and deliciousness.

I’ve been hitting up all the trendy spots lately with my son, and Public Square in La Mesa is definitely a winner. This place is super hip and attracts a young, lively crowd. We went on a Saturday morning and it was packed, it seems like everyone had the same idea to grab coffee and scones here!

Here is what we ordered:
• The Scone: This was amazing. It has that perfect texture, crusty on the outside but incredibly soft and moist on the inside. Pro tip: You have to try it with their honey butter. It is so good.
• Avocado Toast: Another hit. It comes on crunchy toasted sourdough with fresh arugula on top. Simple and delicious.
• Hot Chocolate: Heavenly! It was creamy and rich, exactly the way we like it.
• Matcha: This was on another level. Very cool and rich in flavor.

Even though it was busy, the service was super efficient. You just order at the counter first and they deliver the food right to your table. Highly recommend if you are looking for a great brunch spot in the area!

Very community-friendly safe space cafe with never-miss menu options. I come here for the 6 butter scone flight. The French toast is spongey, custardy, & crispy to perfection. Try the Pandan Latte, my other favorite is the black sesame latte

They are so sweet here. The coffee is so good and the shop is clean and cute. Any recommendations they got you, any food allergies they got you (pertaining to the coffee at least, there are some for the food but not all). If you don’t like something they will remake your coffee free of charge. Great people, great coffee and great environment! Thank you public square

I love coming here and ordering the tomato soup and grilled cheese combo. Food is very fresh and the drinks are good too. They aren’t overly sweet and don’t use heavily sweetened artificial syrups. They have happy hour too!

CHECK YOUR ORDER BEFORE YOU LEAVE!!!!!

I’m so over spending money eating out when the order can’t even be made right. When I first started coming here, this sandwich was $9.95. Now it’s $13.95 because it’s supposedly “new and improved” with more egg, thicker bacon, and other upgrades. Today I decided to splurge and add basil oil ($1.95) and arugula, which brought the total to nearly $16.

I did appreciate that they actually followed through on my request for lightly toasted bread (since sometimes it’s so crispy it hurts my gums). But just because I made that personal adjustment doesn’t mean the egg should’ve been forgotten. The whole point of the “new and improved” version is the egg — and it wasn’t even on my sandwich.

So now I’m at home making my own egg to put on it. Honestly, what’s the point of raising prices if the basics aren’t even right?

I usually enjoy coming here, but this kind of experience makes it really hard to justify returning.

Updated For response:

I’d usually come in for things like this to get it rectified, but unfortunately I had to head straight to work, so I had to make do this time. I appreciate you reaching out and offering to make it right, thank you for that.

What a wonderful place in a lovely spot! Downtown La Mesa is a pleasant, quieter setting, and it’s a joy to sit outside in a place with less hubbub and traffic. The staff was super-friendly and helpful, cappuccino was impeccable and my breakfast sandwich (with added arugula and chili oil – recommended by the cashier) was to die for .

Inside the shop is lovely too. Just beware that in the middle of the shop where there is a comfy couch and chairs, they are on a slightly raised platform (like 3”), which is kinda easy to trip over if you are not paying attention.

Delightful and delicious, what a hidden gem! I enjoyed the scone with fig & honey butter, breakfast sandwich and brown sugar latte (yum cinnamon). Servers are so friendly!

This spot is vibey and has surprisingly good food! We’ve been here several times and the menu is relatively small so we’ve tried and enjoyed just about everything on it. The staff is kind and relaxed and seem to really be enjoying themselves! This is a fantastic place to hang out and sip your coffee slowly.

The scones! Get the scones! Went here on a Saturday and Sunday bc I had to get more scones. Well the butters are really what makes the scones but still get the scones!

Both days were busy but food service was fast. Drinks are delicious and vibes are on point. With all these it makes for a super busy place but staff have always been kind and helpful. Great local spot with chill vibes and yummy food! I just hate that it’s always busy
