Social Profile:

The idea of Taste of the Islands was conceived because as longtime Plano residents we realized that Plano had every other Ethnic cuisine but nothing Caribbean.. Then after watching the February 2004 State of the Union Address and was encouraged by then President George W Bush who was promoting Small Businesses. We decided to take a chance and opened in April 2004. The rest as they say is history ……….

Lively, family-run hangout offering homestyle Caribbean cuisine & drinks, plus imported groceries.

Taste of the Islands is hands down my favorite Caribbean spot, especially when I’m craving authentic Guyanese food. The oxtails are incredibly tender and packed with rich, comforting flavor. Paired with perfectly seasoned rice and peas, savory spinach, and sweet, caramelized plantains, every bite feels like a home-cooked meal done right.

I also can’t skip the beef patties — flaky, flavorful, and always satisfying. On top of the amazing food, the customer service really stands out. Everyone is so friendly and welcoming, which makes picking up food a great experience every time. If you’re looking for delicious Guyanese Caribbean cuisine made with care, this place is a must.

First time visit here. I placed a call in order and upon my arrival my food was being bagged. The establishment is nice, workers semi-friendly, has music, and groceries for sale.

As far as the food….imagine my surprise when I walked in to find that the food is served from a hot bar and not cooked to order. My food was seriously lacking in any kind of flavor; from the main to the sides. I ordered jerk chicken, cabbage, rice and peas, plantains, and a crab cake.

The chicken was soggy and had no real jerk flavor. They claimed that it came with sauce but it is only served with the chicken juice that it sits in on the hot bar. The rice and peas and cabbage had no taste, salt, or pepper. The plantains were extremely dry. The crab cake was laughable and extremely fishy! A total waste of $25. I DO NOT RECOMMEND!

Relaxing atmosphere. The spicy beef patties and the doubles are my favorites. First time trying the other items so I got the “pickney plate” (kids meal size) stew chicken and the special of the day which was the bone in curry chicken. The stew chicken was very flavorful. The curry chicken wasn’t too seasoned but it had a good taste. They also have a bunch of authentic snacks, seasoning and drinks that I haven’t seen in a long time.

I’ve been coming to this restaurant for many, many years, and it has always been a 5-star experience. It had been a while since my last visit, so I was surprised by the changes—possibly due to new management?

In the past, walking in felt comforting, like a weight lifted off your shoulders. But this time, the atmosphere felt tense and unwelcoming—almost like walking into a courtroom. It was quiet, cold, and not the warm, inviting space I’ve always known.

Things seemed rearranged, and I had trouble finding a particular item. Normally, a staff member would ask how they could help—but no one did. It felt more like everyone was just ready to clock out, rather than focused on the customers.

To top it off, I specifically asked for double cabbage, no rice, and the cashier even wrote it on the receipt. But when I opened the plate, there was rice on it anyway. I brought it to her attention and asked if I should show her the receipt, but she refused and insisted, “I did give you double cabbage.” I explained again that the issue wasn’t the cabbage—it was that I didn’t want rice at all. I asked if she could remake it, and she just repeated herself without listening. Rather than argue, I just walked away.

A few minutes later, a woman approached me—possibly the manager—but she didn’t introduce herself or wear a name badge. She simply asked, “Is there a problem?” I told her what happened and asked what she planned to do about it. She didn’t respond and instead began backing away, so I repeated my question. Again, no real help or resolution was offered.

The meal itself wasn’t great either—mostly fat and barely any meat, which is unusual here. I also ordered roti, and when I asked for it with my meal, the response was confusing and dismissive, like I was supposed to know some new policy.

Unfortunately, this visit was a huge letdown. I paid good money for a meal I didn’t enjoy and received poor service from start to finish. It’s disappointing to say, but I won’t be returning.

My husband was craving ethnic food for dinner, so I ordered the oxtail combo and jerk chicken to go. The food was absolutely delicious — big portions with rice and potatoes, and the meat was perfectly slow-cooked. Three days later, we came back to dine in. My son had the jerk chicken, which was fresh (not frozen — you can truly taste the difference!). I couldn’t resist ordering the oxtail plate again — hands down the best oxtail dish I’ve ever had, cooked to perfection, with even the bones bursting with flavor. The roti was freshly made, and the fried plantain paired perfectly with the dishes. We will definitely be back to try more from the menu! We also had the pleasure of meeting the owner, who was very accommodating and friendly.

Blessings. I recently ordered the curry shrimp and watched the young lady preparing it. I was actually wondering how it finished so quickly. When I got home and started eating, I noticed the shrimp were not fully cooked, which was very disappointing.
Additionally, the dish did not taste like curry at all. It seemed as though regular bland seasoning was used, along with something from a red container, but there was no real curry flavor. I also didn’t see any curry being properly cooked or “burned” the way it usually is when prepared correctly. Overall, I’m highly disappointed with the quality of the food and the preparation. It also seemed like the young lady may not have been familiar with how the dish should be made or with the menu. I just wanted to bring this to your attention.

As a foodie that has tasted Caribbean food in Jamaica, Dominican, Miami, New York, New Jersey, DC and now in Plano, TX, I have to admit the food here is not bad. Their curry goat and oxtails with rice and peas are truly worthy of the 4 star rating I gave the food. However , I will definitely stay away the jerk chicken patty the next time I visit which was dry and tasted store bought (that is not made at the restaurant). This place had a pleasant atmosphere and the servers were polite. I’d recommend stopping by for lunch because the lunch portions were generous and made fresh just be prepared to wait about 10-15 minutes since it was busy.

Ate here yesterday with a friend who has been coming every Saturday for the salted codfish special. We ordered with rice and beans and cabbage but you can get a bake or spinach if you prefer. We also got a spicy meat pie and a couple of baked. Everything was perfectly cooked and delicious. The cabbage is rich and flavorful but mild seasoning which worked perfectly to balance the salted codfish. The bakes were perfectly cooked and just a bit sweet. The meat pie was well seasoned and the hot sauce (scotch bonnet or habanero?) complemented it so well. 10/10 5+stars definitely eat here!

As a person born and raised in the Caribbean, I am always in search for places with authentic Caribbean cuisine in the city where I live. Today I was fortunate enough to find this restaurant and was delightfully pleased with the food and service. My curried chicken roti was delicious and definitely had the authentic flavor that I was hoping for. The portions were very generous and the owner, Rehan, was warm and friendly. Thanks again for a wonderful time with wonderful food! I have to be back soon… Maybe for the Christmas party…

Food quality here has gone down hill unfortunately. Oxtails are covered in fat. They don’t even care to trim the fat and seem to get the cheapest and lowest quality of oxtails. It’s a shame. Even after pleading with the Indian dude to make sure I get meat that’s not covered in fat, I got the exact opposite.
Can’t continue to support a place like this but good luck to them as I don’t wish anything bad on any business. In the picture below, I spent 20mins trimming fat off one of the oxtails, totally unacceptable.
Owner said she has to do this to keep price low, I would rather pay more for quality rather than being let down over and over again but oh well.
