We started with calamari, which was well-prepared and enjoyable. For our mains, one seafood mofongo and a grilled salmon, the experience settled into what I would describe as average. Nothing was poorly executed, but nothing particularly stood out either.
Having experienced exceptional seafood elsewhere and more traditional, vibrant versions of mofongo, this meal felt more like you were paying for the convenience of being in Old San Juan than for a memorable culinary experience. It’s not a disappointing restaurant by any means—but if a fresher or more affordable option were nearby, I would likely choose that instead.
A perfectly fine stop while sightseeing, just not a destination meal.
The aesthetic is the true star of the experience. The rustic archways, warm lighting, and soft notes of Coltrane and other jazz greats set the tone for an inviting, soulful meal. We ordered a red sangria, the fish of the day (grilled red snapper), skirt steak with fries, and crème brûlée for dessert.
The food was tasty, and the portion of the snapper was generous—easily enough for two. My husband mentioned that his skirt steak was cooked closer to well than medium-well, but still well-seasoned and tender. The real standouts, however, were the sangria and the crème brûlée. The sangria was light, slightly fruity, and the perfect balance for a lightweight like me. The crème brûlée was warm, rich, and one of the best I’ve ever had.
El Asador is a beautiful dining experience with memorable highlights, especially if you enjoy great ambiance, jazz, and a dessert worth coming back for.
Like many places in VSJ, I think the Asador is trying to be too many things for two many people. Is it a grill house? No, not really – my skirt steak tasted like it was done in a skillet. Italian? We’ll, they have some pasta dishes, so maybe? Puerto Rican? Kind of – you can get sweet plantains as a side.
Needless to say menu could use some prioritization a d focus.
The atmosphere is pretty, but air doesn’t circulate well in those thick walls. It was hotter in the restaurant than outside. That’s why the few locals were dining at the outside tables. We ate inside and suffered.
Otherwise, the fact that you’ll spend $60+/pp after drink/tax/tip for a meal this unremarkable says something.
I ordered the tuna steak, which was cooked well and had a good sear, but it lacked seasoning and felt a bit underwhelming for the price. The sides were just okay—nothing particularly memorable. Service was a bit slow, even though the restaurant wasn’t too crowded at the time.
Overall, it’s a decent spot if you’re in the area and looking for a relaxing meal, but there’s room for improvement in both flavor and pacing.
First of all, the restaurant is perfect for all types of people, the attention is more than divine, perfect, I loved how those who work are always attentive, in the same way it is good because they are punctual with appointments and even more so when the restaurant is a large group. It has plenty of room for that.
With a colonial touch, and old San Juan decoration, I loved it.
let’s talk about food!
Definitely not for children, they do not have a children’s menu available, the truth is that I think that because a place is called El Asador, they should have a more varied menu. We understand that it is something exclusive but it is also a Caribbean country, let’s think about the great diversity they have to offer.
For cocktails, we ordered the passion fruit mojito and a very good margarita .
Note: the fried calamari was good but a little rubbery inside.
❤️The breaded chicken is delicious, and the potatoes are crunchy!
