The waiter was attentive and friendly. Even though there was no English menu, he patiently translated everything for us.
I would suggest preparing an English menu for international customers — it would save time for both guests and staff.
Food-wise, the risotto with salmon was my favorite, followed by the pig leg. The beef filet was not bad either.
Other then that I wouldn’t recommend visiting this place.
There was an occasional bad smell in the air around our table coming from the entrance area (it smelled like human faeces).
Reservation was necessary and we arrived on time, which was the opening time in the evening and there was only one table seated before us. Despite being there among the first, and ordering quickly as well, we received the food as last (even after everyone upstairs as well) in the entire establishment (they served literally everyone that arrived and ordered after us before we were served). I find that strange and luckily we didn’t come in hungry, otherwise that would be a bigger issue. Also considering that the menu is limited and the time spent inside is short, I would assume that they would make some sort of first come, first serve organisation.
I would say overall the horrendous smell as well as the wait time were a big downside to the experience. If we came in hungry it would probably be worse overall experience.
That said, I should go back to the beginning… My wife and I were visiting the area on our way down to Italy for our wedding the following week. We came to this restaurant because of the late Anthony Bourdain. We were big fans and always make an effort to visit the spots he once graced.
The restaurant is the epitome of romance. Right off a cobblestone road in a tight alleyway. The little door and windows lead into a very cozy atmosphere. They definitely fill the space with tables and those tables definitely fill up. Not having a reservation, we showed up right at noon and were promptly seated, though.
Our server was a younger man, who was friendly, but obviously pretty new. We ordered a bottle of wine and it took him several minutes just to remove the foil before opening the bottle. My wife and I work in the wine industry and can understand the pressure of bottle service, but at some point, we wanted to stop and just help him get the thing open. That wasn’t so bad, but he also seemed to back burner us. He forgot our water a couple of times and would skip us to help a bigger table (oddly enough, you can see it actively happening the photo). All somewhat understandable, but there’s room for improvement.
The food was pretty immaculate. The foie gras was so rich and tasty, and the escargot was perfectly cooked with a nice pesto-like sauce. I had the schweinhaxe, which had a tougher, heavily cooked shell, but was so tender inside. Darker than what we’ve experienced elsewhere, but delicious. My wife had the meat dumplings, which left a lot to be desired. A little dry and somewhat granular in texture…
That pie of the day, though. We transparently discussed rating the food a 4/5, but the pie was too good. It was kind of like a spiced cookie with a rich berry jam laced throughout. Perfectly soft and bursting with flavor. It sounds so simple in nature, but it was just so good. A true highlight of the meal.
