Been ordering take out and dining in here for over 20 years. I remember the other locations in Orland Park on Wolf Road and Mokena on 191st were good as well actually. The one on wolf road and rt 6 in Orland Park was my introduction to El Cortez. I think it’s closed now but I remember that it used to get flooded because it was practically built on top of a swamp. But I like this location in Country Club Hills on 183rd street and Cicero Ave. I went here recently with my brother, sister in law, and my mother who were visiting from Florida. When they asked what to get or where to go for dinner, I immediately suggested to dine-in here because they wanted good Mexican food and it was the first thing that popped into my head. They enjoyed it a lot. We ordered:

Chicken burrito
Pork and chicken tamales
Whiskey chicken
Our server, whose name escaped my memory, was very nice and attentive even though we were sitting at a table in the bar area and it was packed (Friday night at 6pm)
I highly recommend El Cortez if you are looking for good authentic Mexican food at a reasonable price. They also have a video gaming area/slot machines if you are into gambling while waiting for your pickup order. I gave it an honest 4 stars in each category because obviously it would have to be flawless in order to deserve 5 which is impossible because nothing is ever 100% perfect…

My wife and I choose this place for our date night .. I had the steak enchiladas. The meat was perfect. Melted in my mouth. I will say when they say they serve steak. It’s the real deal.. we will be back.

We ordered a torta and a steak taco dinner. The meat is not very good. The flavor is pretty good but it is extremely dry and chewy. When I saw that the tortillas were homemade I was excited until I took my first bite and realized they were extremely tough and hard not good at all. It was a struggle to eat them. We had asked for salsa Verde and we were charged almost 3 dollars for salsa we hardly even touched. I have never been charged for salsa Verde. We weren’t even told that it was an extra charge. Than when we were ready to leave it took about 15 minutes to get out servers attention to get the bill. All in all it was a very disappointing experience to say the least. We definitely will not be going back.

I’m giving 3 stars because of our server, I never every leave bad review because im upset or caught in my feeling , this is a really one , like come on the food is not the best , the minute the waiter took our order the food came out no less than 5 minutes, came out less than warm almost cold , didn’t taste good either, the guacamole god forgive me it’s disgusting , taste like water and weird after taste , plus it’s was not busy day either, imma give it another try to see , work on pushing out food hot !! And flavor.

So let me start by saying i used to come here 20+ years ago regularly with my family (the bar area had a glass roof and they had a huge mural on the kitchen wall which is now gone). It was awesome back then! It’s been a while since I’ve been here and i can say they have fallen off a bit. Not saying it’s bad, but it’s not the caliber they used to be. The steak in my burrito was just gray, no charred tidbits, our chips weren’t hot and fresh like they used to be. The suizo burrito cheese wasn’t the same either, it used to stretch and string(mine was lukewarm so might have been the issue). The bistec ala mexicana suizo was still very good though. Also side note they put lettuce and tomato in normal burritos now, i got mine with no lettuce and still ended up with a huge pile of tomatoes which kinda sucked. This location is still way better than mokena, and its still decent food. My review is just harsh because i have seen the restaurant at its peak and it was one of the best around, It’s a shame it has fallen a bit. Good luck guys, I hope you continue to thrive.

* update. 2nd visit, very disappointed. Drinks were flavorless, ordered beef in my food, came out as potatoes instead. Staff was very scarced to find. Kinda pricey, very disappointing and most likely won’t be back

Highly recommend the margarita special! Overall, the food was very satisfying, although I wish the queso serving was bigger! They have outside and inside seating and were accommodating of our party of 6.

Small guacamole was just over thimble size. Food was delivered 1 item at a time with waiting in between. First fajita filling then waiting for tortillas as it cools, then the beans, then the rice arriving barely warm. Then plates finally came. Everything was excessively salty. This place had been a family favorite. I will not be racing back
