Overall a positive experience. The food is extremely flavorful but very salty. Ordered quite a variety of items and all but 1 dish was too salty to eat on its own so it was packed to go. Leftovers were amazing paired with bland noodles and rice white.
The dessert was the highlight of the meal.
I’d go back again to explore the noodle dishes.
The food, however, was the true standout. Every dish impressed, each one bursting with flavor and personality. The steamed catfish wrapped in banana leaves stole the show, tender, aromatic, and perfectly seasoned. Eating the fish with sticky rice by hand was a fun, authentic touch that added to the whole experience.
If you find yourself in Washington, DC, Thip Khao is well worth a visit.
The food here is exceptional. Think Thai food (kind of) on steroids – incredible flavors, dishes you’ve never heard of but should try, great service, nice atmosphere and reasonable prices.
In the photos: a whole Bronzino, a pork dish (kind of like Thai street pork but better), a “salad” that was so full of flavor that you should order 2, noodles that are like Thai Pad See Euw (sp?) but far more flavorful, and some fun chicken wings.
Make a reservation here – you will definitely be happy when you do.
Highly recommended.
The tofu was average tamarind fried tofu, good snack as it was popcorn style. The old fashioned drink was okay. The Ta Dong drink was very unique and delicious, a sort of digestif. The banana leaf rice & vegetables dish was unfortunately mid, strong dill flavor but otherwise flavorless. Very much a filler. The drunken noodles were standard as well.
Finally, the dessert was a light ice cream with sweet sesame rice. Highly recommend the dessert.
Overall was not disappointed but the dishes are very very hit or miss. Do get the naem khao. Don’t get the tofu or drunken noodles.
The pad see ew is the best I’ve ever had. We got chicken with ours. The flavor is so deep. Umami bomb. We also got the jerky. Beef. So tender. Crispy and soft at the same time. Comes with sticky rice in a super cute little travel pouch. I picture hanging it on a stick carrying it when going fishing. As amazing is the food, the service is attentive but never annoying. Drinks great too.
If this place was further down 14th street, it would be impossible to get into this place. It’s probably the best restaurant on 14th. A must go.
One order came out wrong and we were told it was “basically the same,” so we kept it. Nearly every dish was extremely salty—to the point that our mouths were numb. The pork belly was overwhelming, the pork shoulder skewers were burnt, and the Awk from the Jungle had an awkward, unpleasant taste. The red curry (which came out by mistake) was the most edible dish, though still very salty. We explained all of this to the waitress, but nothing was done and no alternatives were offered.
Parking is difficult, and while they have high chairs, there are no child-sized utensils. Overall, the experience felt unwelcoming for families.
We got the crispy chicken wings, green papaya salad (which was a tad too salty), red curry with shrimp, and the crispy whole fish. The food, service and overall vibe was 10/10.
We were a part of 2 – got 2 appetizers and 2 entrees. Total bill plus tip was $130.
