Finally Tried the Famous Dutch Eating Place—Mixed Results
After missing out on previous trips, I finally made it to the Dutch Eating Place in Reading Terminal Market for breakfast. I had high hopes given the reputation of this Pennsylvania Dutch staple, but honestly, I left feeling unimpressed.

I ordered a pancake and a spinach omelet. The pancake was a major letdown—it appeared to be undercooked and doughy in the center. If I were at any other restaurant, I likely would have sent it back, but given how busy and famous this place is, I didn’t want to “attract the wrath” of the staff or the crowd.

To make matters worse, I didn’t notice the special breakfast items (like their famous blueberry pancake special or apple cinnamon French toast) until after I had already placed my order, which was frustrating. As for the coffee, it was very mediocre—definitely not worth a second cup.

I’m willing to give it one more shot. My plan for next time is to return for one of those specialty meals I missed, but I’ll definitely be bringing a better cup of coffee from an outside stand to wash it down, most likely from the Old City Coffee at the Market.

The Dutch Eating Place in Reading Terminal Market is absolutely fantastic! The food is fresh, hearty, and full of authentic Amish flavor. The pancakes are fluffy, the scrapple is perfectly crisp, and the service is warm and welcoming — you truly feel at home. A must-visit spot every time you’re at Reading Terminal!

Breakfast sandwich with a blueberry pancake as sub for the bread is always good. The apple dumpling was okay, crust bit plain, with a great core.

The Dutch Eating Place is located inside the Reading Terminal Market. Grab a stool at the counter (They fill up fast) and they will quickly take your order. My fluffy cheese omelette, side of bacon and orange juice was wonderful and was served quickly. They do take VISA etc. The Reading Terminal is a famous Philadelphia landmark so take some time after breakfast to explore it.

Our food was delicious. My daughter had the chorizo hash and I had the steak and eggs. My sister raved about the cornbread waffle, so I had to try it. It was amazing!

This place is a dream – probably the best apple dumpling and turkey sandwich I’ve ever had in my lifetime. The plates are HUGE and well worth it for what you get. I’m planning on going back there before I head back home. I’ll be dreaming of it thereafter. Diner vibes in the best way.

We hadn’t planned on eating here but decided on them as the place was packed. A line is a good sign!

ATMOSPHERE:
They’re located inside of the Reading Terminal Market. A good-sized countertop snakes around the kitchen with a takeout counter on one side. The place was jam-packed with a constant line that moved quickly. If you don’t like communal dining, this place isn’t for you.

MENU:
Pancakes, French toast, eggs, hot & cold sandwiches, soups, pot pies, burgers. Lunch starts at 10:30am, including daily specials.

FOOD:
Mushroom & Cheese Omelet
There was a real earthy flavor, but I couldn’t tell if it was coming from the fresh mushrooms or cheese. The omelet was packed full of said ingredients and a bit on the runny side, a positive for me.

Home Fries
I gotta learn how to make this at home! The rough chops of potato had textures of soft and crunchy pieces which made for a true homemade taste. Seasoning was left up to the consumer, so I added salt and pepper and was good to go.

Hotcake
It was everything I had imagined; fluffy and moist with a creamy batter. Big portion too.

SERVICE:
As you stand in line, a worker goes down the line asking how many is in your party and seats everyone according to availability. Naturally, smaller parties get in and out quicker.

The gal we had was so friendly and patient despite the busyness. That’s how you do it!

CONDUCT:
Don’t be like this rude, salt & pepper-haired man in a blue business suit that cut in front of the entire line because “he eats there daily”. The women next in line heckled him for it! LOL.

OVERALL:
Affordable, tasty, great service from start to finish. Don’t let the long line deter you from a great breakfast as it moves quickly!

Bountiful breakfast! Had the pancakes and couldn’t finish two! The only things served up bigger than the portions is the fabulous customer service. This place was so busy, but I never felt rushed. The wait staff were all calm, friendly, and efficient. Just like ducks – serene on the surface and paddling like crazy underwater. I appreciated the attentive details like offering cream from local dairies. Fun to shove in with fellow diners on stools. The lines nice quickly and the food is definitely worth it!

We stopped here for breakfast and were completely impressed. I ordered the short stack and a side of sausage while my wife ordered over medium eggs with apple cinnamon toast.

The pancakes blew me away. They were so thick and fluffy, some crispy edges, and they tasted like childhood home made pancakes. If you want to be the envy of the passerby’s you should order these. The sausages were huge and tender. I like the flavor and seasoning of them.

My wife’s eggs were done perfectly and she absolutely loved the toast. We are coming back again for breakfast it’s just that good.

Best pancakes I’ve ever had! Recommend the blueberry pancakes, then add strawberry jam and syrup on top. Great iced coffee, too. Service was so friendly and helpful. Highly suggest getting there at opening time – the line for seating is no joke!
