I’ve driven past this place on 23 a gazillion times, and…there’s a reason it’s never occurred to me before now to stop in. It honestly looks pretty shady/decrepit (though looks CAN be deceiving) and has an equally suspect hotel next to it that could easily find itself the centerpiece of a true crime doc. But it WAS open on Jan 1, we needed a lunch spot after the First of the Year hike, and one chum in particular had a hibachi hankering. So off we went.

I’m trying to be as diplomatic as I can, but it’s honestly in massive need of upgrades throughout the establishment. Beyond the outdated decor (the bar was ROUGH looking), it smelled like cleaning products in most areas, and that was pretty obviously because they decided to do their cleaning during normal business hours. There were literal buckets and bottles of bleach on the floor. When my chum and I went to use the restroom shortly after arriving, we couldn’t immediately go in – the bathroom was temporarily shuttered for cleaning, despite the fact that the restaurant had opened within the hour. That flat-out shouldn’t happen. I don’t know if the staffer in charge was late but this is basic upkeep that should be done before or after customers are on the premises. That’s all to say the vibes aren’t great, and some of that is easily fixable.

I can’t say we really built up an appetite navigating a bike path for an hour in the snow and ice, but we did get two apps to split – the chicken katsu at my request, and rock shrimp. The rock shrimp were very good; decent portion/large shrimp, but the katsu was a miss. This is the second time I’ve been burned by this particular dish, I think because I keep deciding it’s going to be chicken katsu curry but without the curry it’s a very, very dry, flavorless item. Both times this has happened, the chicken katsu was accompanied by a watery tonkatsu sauce that was overly sweet and not great. But again, this isn’t the first time this has happened so this may not be an issue specific to Izumi – maybe this is just a crappy app? Anyway. If you’re katsu curious, I would recommend only ordering it in the context of the curry.

Despite initially eyeing up the chicken katsu option on the lunch menu (which I was told wasn’t applicable for a holiday), I succumbed to peer pressure and joined the hibachi bandwagon, opting for the chicken. A few chums got steak, and I think at least one got shrimp. Honestly, the chicken is a miss and I’d avoid it if you can. It’s super dry (at least they’re consistent in that regard with the poultry), and the teriyaki they’re using for it is super salty. Just not a good dish. I tried the steak, which was significantly better, as was the shrimp, which was my favorite. Very tasty. The star of the hibachi meal though was the fried rice and the noodles. I initially asked for white rice, thinking there’d be a ton of shizzle in the fried rice (like onions, peppers, etc.) but it was literally just rice and egg from what I could tell. The noodles were delicious and widely acclaimed in our party. So ultimately uneven but the hibachi had some highlights.

I’d say the service was pretty decent. A lot of the hibachi experience comes with a bit of showmanship from the chef, by definition. I haven’t been to a ton of hibachi places but the fellow we had was pleasant and…skilled at hurling zucchini into people’s mouths? I guess that’s an endorsement? We had tons of food and I don’t recall any complaints about the meat prep or anything involving the actual cooking. I feel like I’ve seen “flashier” performances but it’s certainly not something I care a ton about – I’m in it for the food and can watch an exciting portrayal on the Criterion Channel from the comfort of my home.

Honestly, this would have been a neutral or slightly positive experience if the fumes from the cleaning products nearby weren’t a constant presence; it was like eating a meal in the hall of a hospital wing. I think you can do quite a bit better than this place, for your tastebuds and sinuses.

Upon entering, the place didn’t make a good impression. It was clear that its best years were behind it. Despite having a reservation for a specific time, we had to wait around 30 minutes before being shown to our table. The restaurant has a rather extensive menu. We decided on the hibachi grill, both adults and children. The drink menu was a bit limited. Fortunately, it turned out that we could order drinks off-menu since they have a bar. From the moment we ordered, we had to wait another 15 minutes for our drinks and appetizers, watching and envying other people’s food. So, the initial impressions were poor. The appetizers were okay but without an explosion of flavor, and what’s more, they were served in plastic dishes. From the time we were seated until the chef arrived, we waited about 30 minutes. The experience improved when the chef came and put on a show. So, the mood was better here. Preparing the food in front of us took about 15-20 minutes. It was a very nice and enjoyable experience. The children also had fun. The food was really tasty. We tried the beef, shrimp, chicken, and salmon. Everything was delicious. One note regarding the proportion of rice/noodles to meat and vegetables: a mountain of rice and a few pieces of the actual dish. I understand that the place wants to give the impression of serving generous portions, but they could reduce the amount of rice in favor of, for example, grilled vegetables. Overall, a good impression. It’s definitely worth visiting the place and trying their dishes.

Have been going here every year for birthdays for years. The chef was amazing. The food was great. I tried to order more drinks multiple times, no one would stop to take out order after the first time. Couldn’t add more food. I asked for them to sing happy birthday to my son and they brought out dessert without singing. Only when we went back up a 2nd time they then brought my son a 2nd ice cream and one person sang. I would understand if it was crowded but it was not.

I can’t believe how terrible my experience was tonight no-show no personality didn’t listen to anything I told him. I took my mom and my sister here who were visiting from out of state. It was quite frankly embarrassing and unfortunately, I don’t want hibachi for a really long time if ever again, the only person that was nice was the waitress. The way the food was being served left much to be desired. It was so sloppy, food was everywhere, like a table of toddlers. It was so disgusting. I have been here in the past and never have I seen the restaurant empty 2 hours before closing. I guess I gm found out why. Keep it moving if you even think of going here. What a disappointment.

Went on Valentine’s Day, fixed menu, which is fine. Had a 5 o’clock reservation, and got seated around 6. I think they forgot about me but not the end of the world. My main complaint was the portion size. I got the filet and scallops. On the vegetables, I literally got 1 PC of broccoli and 1 mushroom, literally the rest of the portion was onions. Noodles and fried rice (an extra $5) was very good. For the filet, I literally got 6-8 small cubes worth, no chance it was even 4 oz. Scallops, I got 4 small to medium. The shrimp appetizer, got 2, which was made after everything else. I should have taken pictures of the portion sizes and showed the manager, but finished it in like 5 minutes because there was so little food. Never go back on a holiday.

It isn’t like it used to be
I asked for “medium” steak and it was too cooked for me…”well done”

The shrimp appetizer was only two for me, but others got 3. Petty? Not when you’re paying these prices.

Service was good, but I will be looking at other options for the future.
And even though we had a reservation, we had to wait a solid 30 minutes, not cool. A “reservation” is a reservation. (Period)
Sorry

We went for a late dinner around 9 and our party of 2 was seated right away. The process was quick and easy with ordering our food. It was a great experience. The chef made the experience great he was so funny and made us have a good time. The food was your typical hibachi food; nothing too special. I do wish the food was seasoned differently instead of being cooked the same way, because the noodles, rice and check/steak kind of tasted the same. Other than that we have a great time.

We had a reservation, but you wont be seated unless there are 6 people to be seated on the table . Amazing experience. It was a show,, a wonderful amazing food show. They served us a soup and salad while watching the food making process. Fried rice was so delicious. Noodle was yummi and juicy. Shrimp was tasty. We enjoyed it soooo much
