Food
Fresh Oysters
A dozen freshly shucked oysters served on ice.
The oysters were fresh and okay to eat, but the flavor was light and not very salty. They didn’t have that firm bite or strong ocean taste that really stands out. Overall, they were fine but nothing special.
6/10
Cauliflower Fritters
Accompanied by coriander and jalapeño chutney.
The fritters were lightly crisp with a gentle earthiness from the cauliflower. The chutney introduced a touch of heat and herbal brightness, giving the dish a balanced flavor, though it did not transcend expectations.
7/10
Fried Calamari
Light batter with shallots and chipotle aioli.
The seasoning was enjoyable, and the aioli had a mild smokiness; however, the calamari itself lacked the desired crunch, resulting in a softer texture than ideal.
6/10
Homemade Seafood Chowder
A comforting and well-executed chowder with pleasing depth.
The seasoning was balanced, and the broth had a smooth, creamy richness that didn’t overwhelm the seafood. One of the more memorable dishes of the evening.
9/10
Sablefish
Marinated in miso, sake, and mirin, finished with toasted sesame seeds.
The sablefish was tender, silky, and beautifully moist. The marinade added a gentle sweetness and umami warmth that complemented the natural richness of the fish. Well prepared and thoughtfully balanced.
9/10
“Mighty Fraser” Filet Mignon
Filet mignon topped with Pacific crab sauce and béarnaise, ordered rare.
The steak was cooked confidently and seasoned well, with the crab sauce adding a pleasing layer of richness. However, the mashed potatoes served alongside were notably dry and lacked creaminess, which detracted from the overall harmony of the plate.
8/10
Ambiance
The dining room is clean, comfortable, and subtly nautical in character — unfussy, with a touch of local charm.
8/10
Service
Service was friendly and courteous. While not overly descriptive or interactive, the team maintained attentiveness and a warm demeanor throughout the evening.
8/10
Price
Pricing is reasonable for the quality and location, particularly the oyster offerings, which are competitively priced.
Overall Impression
Steveston Seafood House offers a steady and enjoyable seafood dining experience, with a few standout dishes such as the chowder and sablefish that highlight the kitchen’s strengths. Though some plates could benefit from refinement, the restaurant’s comfortable ambiance, fair pricing, and classic coastal charm make it a worthwhile visit. I look forward to returning to explore more of the menu.
Unfortunately, not everything hit the mark. My lobster bisque was missing, totally forgot which made me disappointing. The Thai-style seafood bowl felt neither here nor there, lacking the bold, aromatic character typical of authentic Thai cuisine. The West coast oysters were far too small, with the meat barely larger than a 60/70-size shrimp. The shrimp in the seafood platter also failed to impress – lacking sweetness and noticeably overcooked, resulting in a coarse, chewy texture.
Overall, the meal had some standout dishes, like bacon wrapped scallops and fried calamari as well as the wild spring salmon. But the inconsistencies in execution – especially with the seafood – left room for improvement.
Do yourself a favor: order the whole bass… and come back to thank me later!
The bathrooms were sparkly clean. The ambience of the restaurant is so calm and warm. The food took a while to arrive but it was definitely worth all the wait.
Service was excellent—our waiter kept things light with jokes and even brought me dessert when he found out it was my birthday. Overall, a solid seafood dinner and good value.
Phenomenal service and a choice of excellent seafood options.
White table cloth, smiling well trained servers and tasty dishes in a relaxing nicely appointed surroundings.
Definitely a spot to revisit.
