Casual place for seafood with Olympics & Puget Sound views, upstairs from sibling Ray’s Boathouse.
Nicola Kalderash
Ray’s Boathouse is a two-tiered restaurant. The upstairs takes no reservations and is first come and first serve. Downstairs does. The cafe which is upstairs is a bit more casual affair while downstairs is closer to the fine seafood dining.
Oysters
Upstairs I had the oysters. Oysters are priced so expensively these days. Most restaurants seeing it at $5/$6 each. Ray’s Cafe is no exception. But I’ll be happy to say that they were large (not humongous where you’d have to chew them, eck, no one wants to chew an oyster) to justify the value for the amount of meat you were getting. 7/10.
Ray’s has a big selection of wine and spirits, but I don’t drink anymore. The service was okay. Didn’t get checked on often enough or water refilled but she was polite. The ambiance is really nice and I would come again during the summertime to sit outside in the nice weather.
Price is up there though for other items on the menu not just including the oysters. Not sure if many could justify it.
Overall,
6/10⭐

Ray’s Café in Ballard is a classic Seattle spot that combines fresh seafood with some of the best views in the city. Overlooking Shilshole Bay, the setting is stunning, whether you’re watching boats drift by or catching the glow of the sunset, it’s an experience that feels distinctly Pacific Northwest. Its location near the Ballard Locks also makes it a convenient stop before or after exploring the area.
On my recent visit, the food was undeniably fresh, a highlight of Ray’s reputation. We started with the strawberry and spinach salad, which was bright and well-balanced. The pan-seared wild halibut and grilled wild salmon were both cooked nicely and showcased high-quality fish. That said, the flavors felt just a little off, leaving room for refinement to truly match the freshness of the ingredients.
Service was warm and attentive, though the pace was a touch slower than expected, likely a reflection of how busy the café was on a packed evening. Still, the staff was friendly and accommodating, which made the wait easier.
Overall, Ray’s Café offers a quintessential Seattle dining experience. The views alone make it worth a visit, while the fresh seafood and inviting atmosphere add to its enduring charm.

100/10 place. Visited Seattle for my first time from Texas a couple weeks ago and was just looking for a nice restaurant that didn’t look touristy and was away from all the noise, and I hit the jackpot!! Place was super nice, a ton of seating, fast but not too fast of service which made it enjoyable, it didn’t feel rushed. And don’t get me started on the view, it might have been better than the food but I don’t know! I ordered the King Salmon meal and it was unbelievable. I want to start going to Seattle more and let me just say the next time I come I’m going STRAIGHT for Rays!

Fresh seafood with beautiful sea view. We watched boats, kayakers and ships go by while eating. I’m sure watching sunset would be great too. We started with calamari and coconut prawns, i think the portions were a bit small; burger, grilled salmon and clam chowder soup were all delicious, again the portion of the soup could be a bit more. Service was friendly and attentive. Overall a very nice experience.

We had a wonderful lunch here today. The food was delicious. Our waiter was so fun and friendly. We were greeted at the door with a smile. It was busy, but we hardly waited for anything. The food was fresh & delicious! Cold beer hit the spot! Thank you for a great experience today! Greg and Keri 🙂

Loved the food, the ocean views and the location of this historic eatery. The calamari was tender with light batter and the Ceasars salad fresh with fresh ingredients. Sit outside and soak up the good vibes at Ray’s Cafe upstairs from the Boathouse.

Staff was great, food was great, only complaint they brought my cream legs on top of my side, so I couldn’t eat it unless I did something with my crab, then by the time my crab was done my side was full of shrapnel from my crab. Ask for them on different plates or something.

Amazing views, laid back atmosphere, great server and front of house staff, with one caveat: We dined about two hours before sunset, and the staff inexplicably retracted the shades and blasted all the tables with full sun. It took the entire restaurant complaining for them to reverse their decision. I honestly think this was just an honest mistake and it took a little while for the front of house manager to get it corrected. All of our mains were amazing. The shrimp cocktail appetizer was anemic and VERY basic, especially for the $27 we were charged for it. Their craft cocktail game is pretty strong, and their wine list quite respectable. Skip the desserts though. Nothing to see there.

Beautiful location with the view of the puget sound and the Olympic mountains. Lots of variety on the menu and nice presentation of entrees. Server was very kind and always made sure we were taken care of.
