In the Heron Bistro, Michigan City has a better bistro than one could find in downtown Chicago. It is a relatively small menu, but every dish is a perfect rendition of classic French bistro fare. We (5 of us) started with the bread service, grilled beets, escargot, foie gras pâté, and baked brie. Our entrées were steak frites, confit duck, pork chop, and hunter’s chicken. Every bite was delicious and every dish was perfection. Even more notable than the highly functioning kitchen is the fact that The Heron Bistro is truly a well rounded restaurant with beautiful decor, a sophisticated atmosphere, and servers who are knowledgeable, friendly, and efficient. We absolutely loved our server, Nick. This is perhaps the most completely satisfying dining experience one can find in Michigan City.

This was our first time going there. First of all a special mention to our server Luiselle. She was absolutely fantastic. I am new to French food. Luieselle made us very comfortable and helped us navigate the menu. The Short Rib Pasta was perfect. I was overwhelmed with the flavor. I will be back soon.
Thank you again Luiselle for helping us have a memorable Valentine’s Day.

Went here for my 17th Wedding Anniversary tonight. Not only did our waitress make sure we felt the love but also the owner stopped by the table and congratulated us. Food was amazingly good small menu but worth every penny.

First time eating at the Bistro. I got the Steak Frites. What I got was a well seasoned cooked to perfect temperature ribeye, on a mound of perfectly cooked french fries. I ordered a Bolivardier cocktail which was crafted perfectly. These three things together are almost a perfect meal for me. I did have a little pour of rye whiskey after the meal which was lovely.
The overall decor is elegant and elevates the experience. I will go back to try more of the menu which is small, but well thought out.
I have also enjoyed their happy hour in recent visits.

It is so amazing to have a French-inspired bistro in the area as it’s one of my favorite cuisines. I tried the foie gras paté, escargot, steak tartar and the mussels and every plate was so delicious. The drinks were also very tasty and well made. On par or even better than Chicago French restaurants and reasonable prices. Highly recommend checking out this new restaurant!

Great ambiance and date night spot!

Update: Had three dishes pictured tonight and it was so delicious again. The Crème Brûlée crust was !!

As someone who has experienced just about every brunch spot in Michigan City, I can confidently say that The Heron Bistro offers one of the best. The flavors and execution of every dish were phenomenal, showcasing the chef’s incredible skill and the staff’s exceptional service.

The scones were tender and fluffy, and the chocolate croissant was so good it didn’t last long enough for a photo. Flaky, buttery, and perfectly sweet. The Croque Madame was a standout, easily earning 5 stars.

I can’t wait to return once regular Sunday brunch becomes available. Highly recommended!

The Fabulous Heron Bistro!

It’s been awhile since I’ve walked into a restaurant that afforded a most captivating sensory experience, like the one I had at “The Heron Bistro” in Michigan City, IN.

The spectacular mural of the namesake Heron takes center stage upon entering. Flooded with natural light, against a gorgeous palette of colors, the front room dazzles with a true Parisian style sophistication that beckons one to come closer and that is precisely what we did.

The perspective shifts as the eye follows the uber elegant bar back to the Dining Room. The seduction continues all along the way with the swanky appointments and the handsome color spectrum that the minimalist interior design of the space embodies.

Nostalgia struck me as the echoes of times past, where style and panache were the order of the day. I was thrilled to see and experience it recreated once again in this space.

By this time, we were in all “in” and ready for drinks and dinner. We perused the menu and started the evening off with delectable cocktails crafted by Nick and noshed on Fois Gras Pate, Eschargot de
Bourgogne and the Pea and Pear Salad. While I can only speak for the the first two, I enjoyed them both tremendously.

Moving on to dinner, there was absolutely no doubt in mind that I was having one of my all time favorites, Beef Bourguignon! When it arrived at our table, there were oohs and aahs aplenty and immediate requests to try my dish. Of course, I obliged as it was so delicious that I couldn’t help but share my good fortune with my friends. The Chicken Provencal and a special Duck feature were also enjoyed at my table

After a brief respite, we indulged in a delicious cup of Cappuccino, along with Creme Brulee and an incredible house made ice cream that was delightful to say the least.

Our server, Nick, was professional, attentive and an excellent mixologist. *****Service!

Kudos to you, Heather Nath, for your esthetic inspiration in creating, “The Heron Bistro.” It is truly a work of art, in and of itself. Congratulations to you on the accomplishment of this long time aspiration that has come to fruition for you, for it is truly, “Tres’ Magnifique!”

My sister, my mom, and I had a fantastic experience at The Heron Bistro. Miranda, our server, was exceptional. She was very attentive and friendly. The cocktails were perfect, the bread service delicious , and all of our entrees were great. My sister ordered the onion soup au gratin and it was hearty but not heavy and had a perfect balance of sweetness from the perfectly caramelized onions and sharpness from the Gruyère. The Bernaise sauce was done perfectly for the steak frites. I had the market fish, which was fish and chips. It was the best fish and chips I’ve ever had.
The crème brûlée was a wonderful end to our meal.
We highly, highly recommend The Heron Bistro.
It is an excellent addition to Michigan City’s restaurant scene.

The quality and service and atmosphere is something we’ve been waiting for, for a long time, in the region. Every single item we tasted was done to NYC level perfection, and the cocktails and wine list are refined and balanced. Everyone should run and try this gorgeous restaurant ASAP.

We had a wonderful leisurely, dinner last weekend with friends at the Heron Bistro. I had the short rib pasta and my husband had the pork chop. Both dinners were excellent and beautifully presented. The Bistro salad was fresh, with excellent dressing. The highlight was the onsite made roasted cherry ice cream. I only wish they had not been out of couple of our selected wines.
