Review: Excellent Food and Fast Service at Retour

My girlfriend and I recently had dinner at Retour, where we enjoyed a three-course meal that delivered some truly memorable flavors — especially when it came to the main course.

For the starter, we had salmon tataki with ponzu, harissa, spring onions, trout roe, and pine nuts. It was absolutely delicious — fresh, flavorful, and beautifully balanced. The portion was small but just right to start the meal. The only downside was the timing: it arrived almost immediately after we sat down, at the same time as the bread, which made the start of the meal feel a bit rushed. Still, the dish itself was excellent.

The main course was where Retour truly impressed. We both had the 250g striploin with hand-cut fries and sauce Béarnaise, and it was fantastic — one of the best steaks I’ve had in a long time, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The fries were among the best I’ve ever tasted, crisp and golden, and the Béarnaise sauce was rich and well-balanced enough to stand on its own. Everything about this course felt perfectly executed.

For dessert, we finished with a mazarin cake with yogurt mousse, dark chocolate, blackberry ice cream, and bee pollen. It was pleasant, though not quite on the same level as the first two dishes. Still, it made for a nice and light ending to the meal.

The service was polite but felt a bit rushed, and the restaurant itself isn’t particularly cozy or atmospheric. However, the quality of the food more than made up for that — it’s the kind of meal you remember for its flavors rather than its setting.

Overall, Retour delivered a truly delicious dinner, highlighted by an unforgettable steak and some of the best fries in Copenhagen. I’d happily return for the food alone.

The food is generally good, but I have an issue with the portion size of the lobster ravioli pasta. It only includes three raviolis, five cherry tomatoes, and a small lobster tail—probably enough for a toddler. Aside from this dish, the food is fine, and the service is good.

We booked a table and arrived on time. We then had to wait 10 minutes in a chaotic queue before being told our table was only available for 15 minutes! We were then told to wait at the side of the line for another 5 minutes before eventually being taken to a table surrounded by coats in the main corridor by the stairs to the basement. We then waited another 15 minutes hoping to get a menu before giving up and heading out find a better restaurant.

This review is for Return downstairs. We had read about a “cozy atmosphere” downstairs, but the reality was a bit jarring—it felt more like a bunker. Compounding this, the room was very loud, primarily from groups having their meals before a night of partying.
The advertised fine dining experience also fell short. The promised carefully chosen wine pairing for the three-course menu was simplified to a suggestion to just stick with one red wine, with the candid reason that the others were “boring.” The initial experience definitely missed the mark on the high-quality, quiet night we had hoped for.

The food is very delicious and tasty. This place knows how to cook meat in an excellent way. The wine collection are very good and match the dishes. The atmosphere of the restaurant is very cozy and romantic lighting. The staff are very friendly and helpful explaining the menu and wine choice. They prepared also veggie dishes which was great as we have had vegetarian with us.

My go to steak restaurant- never disappointed. The steaks are usually perfect – this time a little salty but still really really juicy and good.

You get the rib eye and then you need to order the sides.

The staff has always been friendly and competent. Nothing like getting I greeted with a smile every time.

I always book off the website without issues.

If you are a steak expert or fan you must try this place. The rib eye grain fed was excellent. The chef cooked medium Smokey from the outside and juicy in the inside. Side dish Spanish was art how he balanced the cream. The guys here are so attentive. Highly recommended if you are in town.

We had a guy who can’t eat beef, so they just made him lobster. Class / High value and super friendly staff.

i had the ribeye and it was delicious however if you’re paying with a non-danish card, be aware that you’re going to pay a 3% surcharge which is ridiculous if you ask me. i didn’t have enough DKK on me so i opted for my credit card but that caused unnecessary fees. it’s clearly stated on their menu card though.

I’m waiting my steak for an hour. I’m so hungry and walked in this place, I need to go back to work after this. It’s wasting me too much time. What I ate here was overly salty soup, tasteless steak, ugly fries without ketchup… And they kept bothering me to take away the unfinished food. This steak tastes worse than any other restaurant steak I have ever had, even the steaks I cook myself are better than this. I almost fell asleep for waiting this kind of thing. Btw, When they handed the cutlery, they put it on the table without any tissue, which made me feel very dirty. I totally don’t understand why anyone would eat at this restaurant. Won’t come anymore.
