The Original Kolache Shoppe journey began back in 1956 on Telephone Road. Throughout the years this family owned and operated bakery has become known as the birthplace of the Houston kolache scene. Serving up yummy traditional Czech pastries is a lifelong passion for third generation owner Kevin Dowd. Squeezed into this pint sized little bakery you’ll find an on site artisanal micro coffee roastery, an espresso bar, and an ever expanding selection of made from scratch goodies. This has made The Original Kolache Shoppe a much loved staple in the community for 65 years.
This bare-bones bakery is known for its signature Czech pastry, plus pies, cakes & coffee.

The sausage and cheese kolaches hold their heat and texture. The sweet options stay balanced without being heavy. The bread has a light pull with no dryness. You feel the quality right away.
Staff works fast under pressure. Orders come out accurate. The vibe shows a spot that values doing things the right way.
This place sets the bar for kolaches in Houston. Worth the long wait and the crowded lobby because the result is strong every visit.
The kolache are absolutely fantastic and worth trying out! They savory ones are very good and the dessert ones were a little less sweet than what I’m used to for pastries but I still enjoyed them.
The silent hero on the menu might be the pecan sand tarts though. Definitely try those if you visit.
Parking was tough as the place is pretty busy and there are limited spaces.
I also ordered an iced Carmel latte which was pretty good.
The Staff was friendly

We had the cherry danish and apple turnover. I enjoy them both.
Food was good, turnovers are delish.
Coffee good.
Definitely on the more expensive side.
Ill give it another try, and try to avoid the older impatient grumpy lady.
Be prepared to stand in line on a busy day, but it’s worth it. If it’s packed, wait it out. These are the best dang kolaches in the city.
The parking lot can be tough on weekend but it’s with it if you can find a good spot or street parking. I don’t recommend parking at the nearby hotel, but street parking is free.
