These sushi rolls felt unfinished — even a child could have made them better. The rice wasn’t seasoned at all. The interior is pleasant, but the service and overall food quality are very disappointing.

Great food, friendly staff, and a relaxing vibe. I had a great experience at Happy Sumo. The sushi was fresh and flavorful, and the portions were surprisingly generous for the price. The Baja and Cabana rolls were standouts, and the seared tuna tataki was excellent. The staff was friendly and helpful, and the atmosphere had a nice energy without being too loud. It’s a solid spot for a casual sushi night, and I’ll definitely be back. Also wanted to shoutout Tyler the manager. He is super amazing, very friendly and cordial and I’m glad they have someone like him to run the place!

Potentially unsafe food: Rotten looking Broccoli stems in tempura the Manager could not explain. Poorly wrapped sushi rolls with a shocking number of pieces having no fish inside, very little spiraled fish/rice, or being 70% fish fat (not the good kind i.e. Fatty Tuna). Apparently there was a new employee.
The manager got replacement rolls and half of the new rolls had the same issues. The replacement rolls should have been checked by the Manager on duty before giving them to us.
The manager on duty took off the bad Tempura and bad rolls. That was fair, but given that we may have eaten Rotten food in the tempura, the fact that we never did get good replacement rolls, and the overall broken up dining experience, I think a different approach would have been better.
I am happy to discuss the problems we had with the Owner or Restaurant manager. Outside of that, we will not be going back again.

Happy Sumo in Thornton is a welcome change from the usual paper-and-pencil sushi routine. It has more of an upscale, sit-down feel without losing the casual comfort that makes sushi dining enjoyable. The food itself was solid across the board. The fish on the Nigiri came out a touch warmer than expected, but it was undeniably fresh and the portions were generous. Each piece of Nigiri had a well-balanced cut of fish and a proper mound of rice—not skimpy, not overdone.
We went with the chef’s pick option, which turned out to be a fun experience with thoughtful selections that highlighted a good range of the menu. The tempura-fried roll stood out: crisp on the outside, flavorful inside, and not greasy at all.
If you’re after a quieter, more polished sushi experience where the focus is on quality and presentation rather than speed or novelty, this spot hits that mark. It’s a place to relax and enjoy good sushi without the chaos that comes with more crowded sushi bars.

Left so disappointed. We got 5 different rolls and they did not taste fresh. The kids meals were a good value and a hit with the kids, but the two rolls that were $17 dollars each were drown in sauce and were not the quality we have had in the past, even metallic tasting . Dust on the walls and blinds left the atmosphere lacking. Our waitress was kind and tried to fix the rolls we ordered even blaming herself for them not being fresh. 1/5. I would not come back.

First time visiting, and the food was outstanding. Loved the ambiance, booths, and lighting were romantic. Waitstaff was complimentary and polite. Ordered the lettuce wraps, thinking they were prewrapped, but you prepared them yourself. The bento box comes with a good portion of food. Sushi rolls are also fulfilling. It’s definitely worth visiting.

We’ve picked up sushi a Happy Sumo a few times and it never disappoints! I recommend both the Philly roll and spicy salmon roll. The staff is friendly and the place is always clean and looks nice. The bathrooms were clean and in good order. I took off 1 star because they didn’t include any soy sauce or utensils in our to-go order.

I came to celebrate my anniversary. Dropped $150 on our tab. It was lunch, the rice was cold. Our server never checked in after she dropped off the food. The place was dead. The floors haven’t been vacuumed in ages either. Definitely not worth the value for the price.

Look We are somewhat regulars here. I only order the cheesesteak roll. What I was given was some kind of poorly made surface n turf or what I don’t know. Read the menu definition and you will see what I mean. It appears the business lat this location has fallen off big time. I know restaurants have not many options to off set loss of business. I can tell you inconsistencies in your menu will get your business gone. One example that they changed for instance is instead of thinly sliced marinated steak I got 1/4 ” cubes of meat. I’m not going to worry to much about it. I won’t be back. The competition surrounds you. It won’t take long to close your doors.
