“Should we try it?” he asked. I just shrugged and said I was game. As we pulled into the parking lot, hubs said he was a little apprehensive as it was an empty lot. I told him it was going to potentially be the best or worst experience we’ve had in awhile.
We walked in to find a classic, and I do mean CLASSIC, diner interior. Red, blue and white decor, vintage wall art, handwritten menu on the walls, and Taylor, a cheery waitress with a great smile and fantastic pink streaked hair, coming over with a menu to greet us.
We had our pick of the place, and while the bar seating was tempting, a booth seemed a little more cozy on a cold night. Taylor gave us a few minutes to look over the menu while she got our drinks. I was happy to see a nice variety of things from breakfast, to burgers, to the diner staples of meatloaf and milkshakes. I went with a western burger (sans cheese) with fries, and the hubby got a bacon lovers burger with tots. We also ordered fried mushrooms because, for whatever reason, that sounded good too.
Wait time was maybe no longer than 10 minutes, and during that time, 4 other people came in. Taylor was handling everything like a pro, chatting all the while. She brought our food over, and it wasn’t until we started to dig in we realized we hadn’t gotten the mushrooms. At that precise moment, she happened to come back and let us know that they would be right out, and apologized because they had gotten a little overcooked and the cook was remaking them. All good, no worries.
The meal itself? 10 x’s better than Arbys. The fries and tots were hot and crispy, the burgers, though appearing maybe a little more done than we liked, were juicy and delicious. The buns were toasted, which is just a chefs kiss to any burger. The mushrooms came out soon after and we let them sit as they were piping hot. When I finally tried one, these were, hands down, the best fried mushrooms I’ve had. I don’t eat them often, and when I have, they mostly looked like unknown blobs of batter. You could SEE these were mushrooms and they tasted fantastic. Taylor checked in with us a few more times to make sure all was well, before we finished up and had to head out and on our way. Total price for 2 burgers with a side and fried mushrooms? Right around $35. A full meal for 2 for $35, IN THIS ECONOMY? Yes. I was quite shocked, considering we almost purchased a mediocre fast food meal for probably more than that.
So, all this to say, I personally recommend this place. 2 thumbs up. And 5 stars.
Also, Taylor should get a raise.
The atmosphere when you walk in was exactly what you would expect. However that’s where the positives ended.
The server was absolutely dreadful. She was angry and irritated the entire time. We sat ourselves (which we found out you were supposed to do after standing at the front counter awhile).
She didn’t come to our table for 10 minutes (we were only the 3rd table when we got there), so we thought maybe we were supposed to order via the QR code at every table. So we started to add an order on there when she came over.
“What do you want?”
From the time we walked in to the time we paid and left: No smile, no courtesy, no thank you.
Other tables that came in looked in disbelief at her attitude as well.
My wife spent most of her working life in service and was appalled. We were patient and understanding, we just couldn’t understand how you’d treat customers so poorly. The only saving grace was the woman helping in the kitchen that brought out our Jalapeno poppers (which were good!) gave us a bit of conversation and apologized for the wait. Also the older manager/owner(?) was courteous and helped where she could and the other customers appreciated her greatly.
We got the rest of our food and it felt like it wasn’t seasoned at all. I got the chicken fried steak and she got the Fisco Burger. Thank goodness for the salt and pepper at the table to at least make it taste like something.
I don’t like leaving reviews like this, but it felt like the entire diner was being held hostage by one bad attitude. I understand people have bad days, but judging by the kitchens reaction to her it’s an ongoing issue.
We were excited, but we won’t be trying it again.
