If you want a pizza story with history, character, and a crust that could convert a non‑believer, buckle up — because this place has been slinging pies longer than most of us have been alive .

Back in the mid‑1950s, 180–182 Lexington Avenue was home to a Gambles hardware store run by Paul & Jerome Dillon. It didn’t last long… but in 1957, the building found its true destiny: becoming the first pizza joint between Cleveland and Columbus.

And with founder Joe Hess famously declaring, “All my cronies want pepperoni’s,” the Leaning Tower of Pizza was born — and Mansfield has never been the same .

Fast‑forward to this week: I was in town for business and Googled “best pizza in Mansfield.” Normally that leads straight to chain pizza — hard pass. Instead, I went with the oldest, most legendary spot in town. If a place has been open since Eisenhower was president, they’re doing something right.

I called in my order and immediately had a great conversation with the guy taking orders — funny, friendly, and clearly proud of the place. The woman working alongside him was just as awesome. Great energy from both of them. I already knew this pizza was going to be special.

I went OG style: sausage and pepperoni.
Pickup time: 20 minutes.
Indoor seating: none.
Building: absolutely iconic. Seriously — even if you don’t order a pizza, go admire this place. Brick floor, dim lighting, plywood countertop, and the smell of fresh pizza drifting down the block like a carb‑scented siren song .

And the pizza?
EPIC.
Fresh ingredients. A buttery crust with the perfect crunch. A style that lands somewhere between Detroit and New York — thick enough to have personality, thin enough to fold if you’re feeling dramatic. The sauce was slightly sweet with a savory finish that made every bite better than the last.

If you’re looking for a fancy, wood‑fired, artisan‑crust, basil‑leaf‑on‑a‑pillow type of pizza… this ain’t it.
If you want old‑school, no‑nonsense, flavor‑packed, character‑dripping pizza, this is absolutely your place.

Skip the chains. Trust the history. You won’t be disappointed.

I’ve ordered pizza here probably four to five times since I moved to Mansfield two years ago. I’ve never been super impressed. Every time I think to myself, “I’ll give it one more shot.”

Honestly, this place just doesn’t have that great of food.

The pizza is bland. There always is a distinct lack of seasoning. It’s the blandest pizza I’ve ever had.

Also, I hate it when the cheese is over the toppings. The pepperoni is always soggy, as is the crust, and honestly just the whole pizza in general. Everytime.

Today I decided to order a deluxe sub to go with my pepperoni pizza. That was even worse. I don’t know how they did it, but they burnt the sammich and yet it was still soggy.

And just like the pizza, there wasn’t any seasoning that was noteworthy on the sub.

Never been satisfied with the food here. And I’ve finally come to the realization it isn’t going to get any better.

The food was amazing! The staff was incredible! All around, very pleased! The gentlemen working behind the counter were friendly and answered all of our questions. I had a veggie sub and it was INCREDIBLE. My friend had a ham pizza (extra crust) and it was pizza I will dream about! So good!!

To note: This location is take out only, but there are a couple of picnic tables behind the building that we ate at.

Leaning tower of pizza is an interesting place. You walk in and you greeted not only by the counter staff, but by some pretty cool old time radio music. It’s definitely not a sit in place. Though they have a big, long bench for you to sit and wait in case your pizza isn’t ready. And if you like pinball there’s a machine there as well. First thing I noticed you could smell the pizza in the parking lot, which, if you can smell the pizza outside nine times out of ten, the pizza place is really good. So we ordered our normal lrg pizza with mushrooms and pepperoni on one side. Which, by the way, i’m almost convinced they sliced their own pepperoni, because it was very thick and was tasty. The mushrooms, though not a deal breaker, I tend to think they came from a can but I could be wrong. The cheese on the pizza was caramelized perfectly with a slight cheese pull, which being from Chicago, was a welcome thing, two experience in Ohio. The sauce it was very tasty.
And everything just kind of mixed together.
And smelled, just like you expect a pizza to smell.(not all pizzas smell good) the crust he had just enough crunch, didn’t taste like flour, but had a really good aftertaste after you finished your piece. I liked it very much. Though, like most of the Pizza out here, the middle pieces were soggy, which usually is a deal breaker for me. But the rest of the pizza made up for it. Of course, I had to do the, how does it taste warmed up, and it passed that test with flying colors. So if you’re looking for an old school, take out pizza with a pretty cool atmosphere counter staff, that’s very friendly and just a dang good pizza located in Mansfield i would say this is the place. And apparently the locals liked it too because they had a pretty steady flow of people coming in and out. There wasn’t much sitting around, so their wait times for the pizza was pretty accurate. I give Leaning Tower of Pizza a 9.0 on my chicago pizza scale. I will definitely be back to see if they’re consistent. But i’m pretty sure they will be. And oh, yes, they square cut the pizza, thank you.Thank you thank you.

I will never order from this place again. I ordered a pizza sub, I told them I ONLY wanted pizza sauce , cheese, and pepperoni only on it. The worker said you don’t need to say only because that what comes on it … like okay some places throw everything on it … well went to pick it up get home and EVERYTHING is on it , I called back and asked for a manager and asked why everything was on it when I asked for only cheese, sauce and pep. And the manager said “well that’s how we make them and you have to deduct it from the order .. I said I DID I said what I only want on my sub. He said still you have to deduct it you have to tell them no salami, and the other stuff.. I said I shouldn’t have too because I told you what I only want on my sub .. like he was not making any sense!!! This place is a joke and there employees are rude!

If I could give 0 starts I would. We used to love leaning tower subs, but we just had an order, drove 50 minutes round trip, only to get home and we were missing a sub. We were told on the phone that we could come back and get our money back and get our missing sub. I drove back over there and they said they would refund me but wouldn’t give me my missing sub. So a total of almost 2 hours of driving to only get $12 back and not get my missing sub. This is horrible customer service. They refused to make it right. Not a way to run a small business. Bad food and bad service! Never again!
