The food overall was solid. The burger was cooked right to temperature and tasted good. It did not blow us away, but it was definitely enjoyable. The pulled pork, however, was fantastic with a generous portion that made it a highlight of the meal. Fries were crunchy, well seasoned, and perfectly executed.
Prices felt a little high for what you get, although that seems to be the way things are going everywhere these days. Still, we had a good experience with above average food and great service. We will gladly stop in again.
Let’s start with the food:
The portions were huge!!! We left full, with a ToGo box stuffed full, and my boyfriend is no small eater!!! The food was SO delicious, that cornbread was unbelievable, and the housemade sauces were out of this world!!!
The service was incredible. They boast “family like service” and they weren’t playing!! Jordan himself was our server and he was kind, patient, informative and so helpful! We have a hard time making choices, but he answered all our questions, offered suggestions, and made sure we got the most bang for our buck!!!
The atmosphere was wonderful!! We enjoyed all the cute, snappy quotes and it had a very southern BBQ feel. The women’s bathroom art was great for a giggle and the decor was so charming!!
All in all, I plan to return again, and if you haven’t checked them out, I highly recommend you do, because you won’t leave disappointed!!!
The real standout for me was the “Build Your Own Burger”, which was cooked to a perfect medium rare—juicy, flavorful, and lightly charred with just the right touch of pink inside. I loaded mine up with crisp lettuce, melty cheese, caramelized onions, and their signature cherry-BBQ mayo. The flavor was phenomenal, with a subtle smoky infusion from their cherry wood smoking process that adds a unique Michigan twist. The fresh bun held everything together without getting soggy, rounding out what was honestly one of the best burgers I’ve had in a long time.
The fries that came with it were just as impressive. Golden brown, extra crisp, and perfectly seasoned, they had a slight sweet and smoky flavor—almost like honey BBQ chips. Addictive and delicious, they made the perfect side to an already excellent meal.
Beyond the burger and fries, Johnny V’s offers a menu packed with local favorites like smoked brisket, ribs, pulled pork, and creamy mac & cheese. Portions are generous, prices are fair, and the quality is consistent. Whether you’re a BBQ lover or just looking for a killer burger and fries, this place delivers.
Final Verdict: Great food, friendly service, and unforgettable flavors—Johnny V’s Smoke Shack hits every note. Don’t miss it if you’re in the area
I ordered the 1/3 brisket, with mac and cheese and a baked potato. It comes with a cornbread.
Let me break it down item by item:
What wow’d me: The cornbread, moist, sweet, had me wanting more
I had high expectations for the brisket, but what showed up on my plate was not the brisket I thought I’d get. Sure, it was juicy, but it almost tasted boiled rather than smoked, there was so much juice at the bottom, if the bark of the brisket had any flavor, the juice ruined what bark it had. I had a couple bites where I could see the vision of what the restaurant wanted their brisket to be, but maybe it’s just me, but the brisket was just that much of a let down.
They have a variety of sauces, and I had just the KC sauce, but the sauce was a tad too cold for my liking. Hot brisket dipped in cold sauce = not a good combo. If the restaurant put the sauces on the table like a ketchup bottle, not only could I try different sauces, but the sauce would be room temp.
The mac and cheese was good, however the sauce under the cheese crust was a tad dry to my liking, and the cheese crust was a tad dry as well. Maybe it was cooked a minute too long, or maybe it’s how it always is served. The mac and cheese is so close to being great.
Lastly, the baked potato was dry. They do serve it with butter and sour cream on the side, but I had a hard time with a metal fork scraping out the potato, and I had baptized it with 3 butter packets. Not sure how they could fix that, but it was worth mentioning.
Overall, is this a BBQ place that serves better than average BBQ you’ll find in Michigan? Yes.
But in my opinion, it’s not a place I’d drive out of the way for.
We ordered 2 burnt ends Mac and cheese and fries for $48 and some change, burnt ends were old and like rubber and the mac and cheese was dry like it had been sitting on a warmer for far to long..
Got a large to go box and fed them to the dogs..
Got out of there and ended up eating elsewhere in Perry…..we would not go back.
Service was good even with them being busy.
Place was recommended by my doctor as he always raves about this place (wait till I see him again)..
