Reservations are recommended at Tobiuo Sushi & Bar on Fri & Sat. Got lucky to be seated since we were walk-ins. Michael was friendly and provided excellent service as our waiter. Ordered his signature drink, jpop! Super refreshing.

My top dishes were the miso butter scallops and the salmon sashimi flight. They tasted amazing!

Other items ordered that were alright:
– unagi mami (eel roll)
– American Wagyu (tender, thought it would be a bit more svaory)
– Sake toro (salmon belly)

Daily Specials were ok:
– inada nigiri (young yellowtail) & mejina/black sea bream sashimi (chewier than expected)

Kuropan (squid ink milk bread w/ Thai tea ice cream) was my favorite dessert. Ube churros were good except the ube dip (plain and lacked flavor). The calamansi and ube ice cream were solid though.

Excited to try other menu items in the future!

We came in for a casual lunch and ordered the 9-course omakase at $120. Somehow it turned into a 13-course market-price set at $240 per person. For three girls at lunch, that was way too much food and not what we had in mind. We honestly had to push ourselves to finish, and we even had to take the dessert to go because we were completely overwhelmed. Our total came out to $835 for lunch. That’s a huge jump from what we originally ordered.

A little more clarity on pricing would have made the experience much better.

Order:
Shrimp tempura slices: 15/10
Shishito Peppers: 8/10
Brussel Sprouts: 9/10
Chicken Udon: 10/10
Extra Shaggy: 10/10
Steve-o: 10/10

The spice level can be adjusted on any dish.

Service was great. I failed to get the gentleman’s name, but he knew extensively of the menu, he was kind and you can tell he thinks highly of the level of the food they offer.

We stopped by on a Wednesday evening and it was not crowded at all. Seating outside, or booth or table inside. The lights are low but not dark.

Everything was clean and the atmosphere felt inviting.

We highly enjoyed every single bite!! Even my 3 year old daughter enjoyed the mushrooms that came with her udon. She ate the shrimp tempura, and loved her udon noodles! They even mixed some egg in rice for her and she enjoyed that as well!

My husband doesn’t eat the raw meat so we just stick with the only 2 cooked rolls that they offer and boy were they good!!

From the level of service and food here, I think this might be the first place that he might want to explore a taste of real sushi. I will definitely order more of the tempting menu on our next visit. This place is definitely one to be visited and explored. Your taste buds will thank you ♥️

There’s no shortage of good sushi spots in Houston and Tobiuo definitely is not an exception to that. However, what sets it apart isn’t the great food it offers (the miso butter scallops are a banger), but the service that was provided. Huge shoutout to the goat and our server Michael and his signature drink, the J-pop.

Our only complaint is that for the ube churros, the ube dip tasted like it was just whipped cream with purple food coloring (the ube ice cream and calamansi sauce were great though).

Despite that, we would definitely go back for more and recommend Tobiuo to others.

Contemporary sushi joint.

I enjoyed dining here. The service was attentive and friendly without being a burden. The presentation of the dishes was colorful eye-candy. There was no wait for a Sunday dinner.

Each dish we ordered was unique with it’s own personality. They all stirred excitement and eagerness to try within our group. Everything we tasted was on point and left us wanting more. I appreciated the creativity and detail put into everything we ordered.

Highlight: Cilantro Hamachi – Refreshing roll that cleanses your palette with every bite.

I highly recommend dining here.

The food was fresh and great quality, but it’s not enough when you are dining out, specially choosing a (what you thought was) a nice place for a date or occasion. Very disappointed, all three of us that went were talking about it the next day. So I had to review.
First the atmosphere was very cold and I heard a couple next to us have that complaint also. It’s also dark in a non romantic way. All the servers, kitchen, and the sushi chefs behind the sushi bar- as I looked around to call for our waiter several times- were enjoying socializing together like they were wasting time. They seemed happy to be hanging out and talking in groups. By the front door, by the sushi bar and by the kitchen entrance. Our first waiter was the worst, he seemed to be in a hurry to take our request and walk quickly off.. without asking if anyone else needed anything else. When ordering wine and sake, no recommendations were given. There was one waiter that saved us, had a smile and was helpful, thank you.
The menu is very vague, explain more what the different categories were, didn’t know whether they were rolls or plates….
We did mention it was our first time there but did not get any recommendations on specials or drinks, or an overview of the menu.
It is unfortunate because I was being treated for my birthday and my company I could tell we’re disappointed to try this new place on this occasion.
It is pricey, so you should expect more than food on a dish.
We definitely would not recommend it or would we try again.
Management? Training issues? I don’t know. The over all vibe is not welcoming.
To end in a positive note, we had the shiso crunchy , the lime ebi, sashimi set, calamari, which were all very good.

I am absolutely astonished, with my time at tobiou, no one compares to my amazing all time favorite server danny! he deserves the world. I will forever go to danny and I don’t think I would consider going to another server. Once I went to another server and she was rude. The food here is so amazing. The sushi is fresh and it’s worth the waiting! if anyone has anything to say about the wait time just know it’s made by order. So you can go and eat frozen sushi somewhere else.

If you love sushi, this is the place to try. The service, atmosphere, and food is top notch. Let’s not leave out the cocktails. My husband had the most delicious drink — “The J Pop”, and I had the lychee martini. We will be back!!!!

Be careful with their Omakase menu trap/scam. We came in with 3 people to have a simple omakase for LUNCH. We have a lot of experience in Omakase and were careful to ask the waitress to confirm that what we order is the 9 course omakase for $120/each BECAUSE they have another set underneath at Market price. We didn’t count how many courses served while eating. At the end after a big meal which we had to overeate to not waste food, we were charged for $240 each person market price for the set that we didn’t order. Total $720 without tip for 3 people. WTH. We know we were tricked because that special market price is even too much for a big guy, three of us are petite. The waitress went straight to market price menu without telling us the price for that day up front while we ordered $120/set for 9 course. Such a shady managing.
