When Jeff Thompson moved to Birmingham from Louisiana in the early 1990s, his first order of business was to assess the local dining scene. That’s when he discovered a glaring void that made it virtually impossible for him to call Alabama home.“There was no Cajun food at all, and I just can’t live without my crawfish!” Thompson said, laughing through his thick Louisiana drawl. “It was either do something about it or go home. This was a deal-killer.”

I wasn’t prepared to take a nap after lunch, but that’s exactly what I’m about to do!

This was my first time at Cajun Roux. I studied the menu before coming (yes, I’m one of those people). I also like to have different plates in front of me while eating, so I ordered a cup of the Lobster Bisque, the Breaux Bridge FGT, and the Redfish Rockefeller.

Everything had great flavors. I probably ate too fast and will need to do some cardio before my nap .

I do plan on another visit to try other menu items and maybe wear some stretchy pants.

First visit and loved it! ✅ Convenient parking in the back , warm Cajun-style décor , and excellent service . I had the Shrimp & Catfish Platter —fresh and flavorful! The thin-cut wedge fries were a nice surprise. Prices are a bit high, but worth it for the quality. I’ll be back! Highly recommend!

Although the restaurant has a time limit of 1.5 hours per table, our experience was truly exceptional. The seafood pasta was bursting with flavor and incredibly delicious. Our server, Jada, was extremely knowledgeable and patient. I also enjoyed a refreshing sunrise sunset fruity drink that was expertly prepared. The atmosphere was great, striking a perfect balance between a bar and grill style and a family-friendly environment.

First of all, they have a very rude sign posted up saying if you can’t afford to tip 20% then this isn’t the restaurant for you. Now if the service was good, that wouldn’t be a problem. We had a horrible server. The place is super small but the food was decent.

1st visit was Saturday, Jan 17, 2026. Nice looking spot, lighting and background nose great. 1st impression was the large sign at hostess station: “If you can not afford to tip 20% then Cajun Roux may not be the place for you”. Odd; generally I find that 20% is the average and a place that looks this nice probably earns more. I was wrong. 2nd impression: Below that sign was another large sign stating 1.5 hours was the rule, you may not stay longer. Hmm, 2 negative signs before I even ask to be seated. Waited at the bar until a table was ready, reasonable wait time. Bar was active and attractive. Could not figure out why hostess station needed 2 girls to operate it. Once seated we found our waitress to be cold, indifferent, and easily interrupted, turned and walked away to address other tasks several times while trying to attend to us. They did not seem to be short staffed. Several people asked how everything was before our drink order was taken, no one checked later. Food was good to great, but it weas dropped off by random people in a rush with no words, just “bam”, here’s a plate! When done I ordered Beignets to go and a box for our leftovers. Empty box was delivered and our leftovers removed to the kitchen before we could blink. Beignets delivered and I asked about our leftovers, told they had already been thrown out. I asked for at least some dirty rice. Another drive by drop of a container of dirty rice and we were outta there.
Food was great, but for >$100, nope. In no way did I feel like my business was appreciated nor was I encouraged to return. I really felt like we were impediments to turning the table rather than guests looking for a nice upscale dinner (and we were there less than 60 minutes!)
Here’s a thought: If your atmosphere and service earn it you will find 20% will always be exceeded in a restaurant of this type. If you need to tell me that then you have already failed. Just treat people such that you don’t need the signs. Seriously, they are right there at the hostess station, eye level!

Been working our way through all the Cajun places in the area, and this one’s a keeper! Busy, but not packed at lunchtime on a Saturday. Nice cross between a sportsbar and slightly more upscale tavern atmosphere, with a patio that adjoins the bar in nice weather. Staff was very friendly, and food was ready quickly.

Ordered a cup of gumbo, cup of jambalaya, calamari, hushpuppies, and bread pudding. All were great, and the calamari included the squid tentacles as well as body, which hasn’t been common in our experience.

My son was visiting and he asked me to pick somewhere to dine. I’ve heard of this place and since we were in the area, I’m thinking, let’s give it a shot! We were pleased! It was sooo good! The hostess and the server were pleasant as well!

This is a mixed review of the food/experience and the restaurant’s operational choices. The good was the food we chose was very good, the service that we received from Regan was very good as well.

The BAD, is the establishment’s sense of entitlement and arrogance. The first thing you are greeted with when you walk in is a sarchastic sign that reads, “IF YOU CAN’T AFFORD A MINIMUM 20% GRATUITY……” and below that, another that reads ” …1.5 HOUR SEATING LIMIT”. But it did not stop there, once seated, in a BOLD font in the menu is “ALL SALES ARE FINAL AND WILL NOT BE TAKEN OFF FOR DISLIKE” and “20% GRATUITY ADDED FOR A PARTY OF 5 OR OVER”. I normally tip well for good service and better for exceptional service, but to assume a 20% gratuity is mandated and enforced on a party of 5, when traditionally it is a party of 8, but as low as 6 is again arrogant and entitled. I understand not removing items from a bill because someone did not like it, but if it was not prepared well or was just poor quality, it seems from the other reviews they enforce that policy as “disliked”, yeah, I am going to dislike poor quality or preparation.

Then when reviewing my bill, I noticed the 5% Hoover liquor tax was charged at a rate of 14.5%. I filed a complaint with the Hoover Department of Revenue and will be requesting a refund from Cajun Roux once Hoover confirms my complaint.

I gave a two star review which is unusual for me, but I really felt the barrage of sarchastic and crass signage/notes created such a negative feeling for me. The food/service that I had would rate a 5 star, but the establishment’s choices would be 1 star.

Be better.

Did not expect the food to be as good as it was. For a busy restaurant, the servers are doing a great job at keeping up with the demands and crowds. Reservations are recommended for dinner. Everything on the menu is fresh, tasty, flavorful.

My daughter and I stopped here for lunch on our way home from Tuscaloosa. We decided that we wanted a Po Boy and selected Cajun Roux. This was our first time dining here. Got our table quick. the server was great, and the food was awesome. I’m glad that we stopped by and can’t wait for the one to open in Huntsville. Highly recommend to get you Cajun fix.
