When Jeff Thompson moved to Birmingham from Louisiana in the early 1990s, his first order of business was to assess the local dining scene. That’s when he discovered a glaring void that made it virtually impossible for him to call Alabama home.“There was no Cajun food at all, and I just can’t live without my crawfish!” Thompson said, laughing through his thick Louisiana drawl. “It was either do something about it or go home. This was a deal-killer.”

This was my first time at Cajun Roux. I studied the menu before coming (yes, I’m one of those people). I also like to have different plates in front of me while eating, so I ordered a cup of the Lobster Bisque, the Breaux Bridge FGT, and the Redfish Rockefeller.
Everything had great flavors. I probably ate too fast and will need to do some cardio before my nap .
I do plan on another visit to try other menu items and maybe wear some stretchy pants.

First visit and loved it! ✅ Convenient parking in the back , warm Cajun-style décor , and excellent service . I had the Shrimp & Catfish Platter —fresh and flavorful! The thin-cut wedge fries were a nice surprise. Prices are a bit high, but worth it for the quality. I’ll be back! Highly recommend!
Food was great, but for >$100, nope. In no way did I feel like my business was appreciated nor was I encouraged to return. I really felt like we were impediments to turning the table rather than guests looking for a nice upscale dinner (and we were there less than 60 minutes!)
Here’s a thought: If your atmosphere and service earn it you will find 20% will always be exceeded in a restaurant of this type. If you need to tell me that then you have already failed. Just treat people such that you don’t need the signs. Seriously, they are right there at the hostess station, eye level!
Ordered a cup of gumbo, cup of jambalaya, calamari, hushpuppies, and bread pudding. All were great, and the calamari included the squid tentacles as well as body, which hasn’t been common in our experience.
The BAD, is the establishment’s sense of entitlement and arrogance. The first thing you are greeted with when you walk in is a sarchastic sign that reads, “IF YOU CAN’T AFFORD A MINIMUM 20% GRATUITY……” and below that, another that reads ” …1.5 HOUR SEATING LIMIT”. But it did not stop there, once seated, in a BOLD font in the menu is “ALL SALES ARE FINAL AND WILL NOT BE TAKEN OFF FOR DISLIKE” and “20% GRATUITY ADDED FOR A PARTY OF 5 OR OVER”. I normally tip well for good service and better for exceptional service, but to assume a 20% gratuity is mandated and enforced on a party of 5, when traditionally it is a party of 8, but as low as 6 is again arrogant and entitled. I understand not removing items from a bill because someone did not like it, but if it was not prepared well or was just poor quality, it seems from the other reviews they enforce that policy as “disliked”, yeah, I am going to dislike poor quality or preparation.
Then when reviewing my bill, I noticed the 5% Hoover liquor tax was charged at a rate of 14.5%. I filed a complaint with the Hoover Department of Revenue and will be requesting a refund from Cajun Roux once Hoover confirms my complaint.
I gave a two star review which is unusual for me, but I really felt the barrage of sarchastic and crass signage/notes created such a negative feeling for me. The food/service that I had would rate a 5 star, but the establishment’s choices would be 1 star.
Be better.
