We came in a group of four. Two of us got the chicken biscuit sandwiches and the others got a Caesar salad and another thing I can’t remember. General vibe was salty- Marine levels. I can hack salt, in fact for me it is preferred, but this was threshold salt personally. The others found their food all too salty, having not finished their food and encouraged a lower review.
The prices were good, service fast. It’s possible that we’re just British and not used to the food here (likely)- so take this review with a pinch of salt (but don’t add it to your food).
The restaurant is laid out like a children’s play area. Interesting vibe but I imagine this makes it particularly friendly for children!
The merch also looked very good, but unfortunately the nicer items were only in stock in XL.
The staff was very friendly and answered any questions I had about the menu. The decor included lots of vintage toys, a trip down memory lane for Baby Boomers. The building is unassuming, tucked away in the Garden District. Just as good as any pricey place in NOLA.
Ok, this one’s a tough one. I visit New Orleans often, and every trip I make/add to my list of hot spots to try. Molly’s Rise and Shine was at the very top this time. I woke up, hopped on the St. Charles streetcar, and walked half a mile—excited and ready for what I thought would be an amazing breakfast.
It was a quiet Wednesday morning, so the place wasn’t crowded. I ordered the carrot yogurt granola and the fried chicken biscuit. The granola? Absolutely delicious—unique, fresh, and perfectly balanced. But then… things took a sharp turn.
That chicken biscuit? Whew. It was so over-seasoned and topped with what looked like a whole ice-cream scoop of honey butter. Two bites in and my stomach said, “Hold up, wait a minute. Don’t go there, ‘cause I ain’t with it!” The amount of seasoning hit me like a freight train. I actually started to feel sick and had to stop eating.
Trying to recover, I was still hungry and went to order some plain grits and a biscuit to settle my stomach. Took a couple bites, ran to the restroom—and, unfortunately, got sick because of the amount of seasoning from that chicken. When I came back, my table was bussed and cleared… along with my uneaten grits and biscuit. At that point, I had to laugh. My breakfast dreams were officially crushed. $45 spent on 5 bites of breakfast.
I hopped back on the streetcar, regrouped, and made one last stop at Willa Jean. Redemption! The food there was so good and totally made up for the rough start to my morning.
The food itself is amazing. We all ordered the chicken biscuit, which has a spicy rub, but also has a sauce that is slightly sweet and rich to balance the heat from the chicken. We also ordered the McCaviar which was really good. And they had a special … Kachapuri = Georgian (the country, not the state) bread. I don’t know if this is a limited time item, but it was amazing!! It had meat and other ingredients baked into the bread and a egg yolk and butter on top.
The instructions for ordering are clear; pay up front at the register, and someone will bring the food, so the service was straightforward and the wait to get the food after the order only took about 15-20 minutes.
One of our better restaurant experiences during this trip.
Important note: no sitting until you’ve placed your order and received a trophy.
Try to get in early or later to beat the busy line
Had a grand slam McMuffin, classic biscuit sandwich, and grits. Food is cooked to order and very salty.
