Located in a more “out of the way” location near an industrial park, Sparky’s was well the visit.
This is a counter service restaurant. You order at the counter. They bring you your food – in food truck containers. But you sit inside the restaurant at tables to eat (if you want).
The food was excellent. The portions are large.
If you are not hungry get the mini portion size.
Food arrived hot and perfectly cooked delivered to your table. The service was great and they continually checked in to make sure everything was going great.
Exceptional customer management.
Super clean and excellent. Highly recommend.
There are a variety of items on the menu. Note that the “ traditional Hawaiian”dishes are only available on Friday’s.
We had the Saimin, hurricane Mochica chicken, hurricane chicken katsu, hurricane fries and the sweet and spicy pineapple hurricane chicken. Loved the unique “take” on the macaroni salad.
All items were really great. The only recommendation we can make:
More sauce on the fries. Not just the tops. Once you get through the top layer it’s just fries.
The saimen – while very good had “thin” broth. It needs a more umami flavor that comes from longer cooking with the bones. This was probably our least favorite of all the dishes. Very good. But can be improved compared to others we have had.
That’s a minor point and should not take away from the great restaurant Sparky’s is.
Go enjoy it. You will be glad you did.
As soon as we walked in, we knew this place was special! The walls were lined with wonderful, historical photographs of people critical to Hawaii’s development making a strong statement to the food’s authenticity.
It took us awhile to decide because the menu had so many delightful choices.
As we were on a bit of a time crunch, we chose a few items, to share, and every single one was fabulous!
I was feeling adventurous and asked our server what sauce I should have with my rice dish. There were two to choose from, with one being a bit spicy and the other more mellow. I chose the mellow one and was not disappointed! The hurricane sauce was so flavorful and creamy that I scraped every last bit out of the little container. If we could have brought the large bottles they had for sale on the plane, I would have purchased a dozen.
The meat dishes were delicately, seasoned, well prepared, and tender.
The kids meals came with a drink, and included simple dishes like hot dogs, quesadillas and fish, which the grandkids loved!
The entire restaurant, including the kitchen area, restroom, and seating space was immaculately clean.
Looking forward to going to Sparky’s again where we may take our time and try more dishes!
I got the smoked meat with spicy pineapple sauce (their signature) and my wife got the grilled mahi mahi. The smoked meat had the perfect amount of spicy and sweetness and an deliciously intense smokiness. It is a bit salty but the white rice balances it out nicely. My wife’s mahi mahi was cooked perfectly – fresh, moist and seasoned beautifully. Also, the food isn’t just good for a fast casual joint standard – this food tastes better than all the other restaurants we’ve been to in our 10 days on Maui and Oahu (some of those restaurants charge $100+ per person). One suggestion is maybe to add a non-fried chicken option to the menu – I think a smoked chicken with the spicy pineapple sauce would be crazy delicious.
The food was so delicious that on the next morning before my flight, I ordered the guava smoked meat to eat at the airport! Please don’t miss this joint when you’re in Maui!
The portions were decent, but the food was hit or miss. The burger was fine, the Hurricane Mochito Chicken was good, and the smoked pork with Liliko’i sauce was way too sweet for our taste. We asked for some regular chicken strip for our kid, they were nice and made them even though they didn’t have it on the menu. The Poke Nachos were just okay.
The best part was definitely the Hurricane Fries, those were awesome! Their Hurricane sauce is really good too. Everything else was average. Overall, a bit overrated and not a place we’d go back to next time we’re in Maui.
I didn’t catch the host’s name but he was super friendly and his sister makes an amazing coconut cake.
This will be my first stop next time I’m in Maui.
Hamburguers are THE BEST!!!
The employees are amazing! We asked a bunch of questions and the girl ( kamalani) taking our order, she was just happy to help.
Food came and we had the best burguers we have ever had.
Defenately coming back !
