South of Philly is an outstanding lunch and dinner spot if you’re craving quality sandwiches and flavorful wings.
When we first walked in, the first thing I noticed was that it wasn’t very crowded. Sometimes that can be a red flag—but in this case, it turned out to be a hidden advantage. The food came out fast, fresh, and piping hot. From the first bite, I knew we were in for something special.
The atmosphere has more of an old-school, no-frills vibe. It’s not flashy or over-the-top, which actually made the experience better. I walked in with neutral expectations—not expecting anything extraordinary, but not expecting anything bad either. What I got completely exceeded that middle-ground mindset.
Their menu offers a wide variety of options, but I went with something classic and comforting: a Philly cheesesteak (no mushrooms), upgraded with Cheese Whiz, along with sweet chili chicken wings and a side of onion rings.
Let’s start with the wings. The sweet chili sauce was perfectly balanced—just the right touch of heat paired with a subtle sweetness. Even fully sauced, the wings maintained their crispiness, which is not easy to do. If I had to critique anything, I’d say the blue cheese could be upgraded—but that’s a minor note in what was otherwise a near-perfect execution.
The Philly cheesesteak was equally impressive. The bread was soft yet sturdy, packed generously with meat, cheese, and vegetables from edge to edge. Every bite was balanced and satisfying. The onion rings were exactly how I like them—thin, crispy, well-seasoned, and fried to a perfect golden crunch.
Everything from the food to the drinks, the atmosphere, and the customer service was on point.
The only thing I passed on was dessert. The cookies didn’t look as fresh as I would’ve liked, so I decided to skip it this time. That said, it didn’t take away from an otherwise top-tier experience.
Whether you’re looking for a dine-in lunch, dinner, takeout, or delivery, South of Philly absolutely delivers. I genuinely don’t think this place gets the attention it deserves. It’s a hidden gem, and I will definitely be back to explore more of the menu.
If the staff has recommendations next time, I’m all in—I’ll be there to try them.
Highly recommended.

We checked out South of Philly in Sylva, North Carolina today, and having had family in Philly—where we’ve eaten our fair share of cheesesteaks—we were excited to see how it stacked up. The atmosphere instantly gives you that Philly vibe, ( if you know, you know, old school wood booths and all) and the food is impressively authentic. The cheesesteak hit the spot and tasted like the real deal. One piece even had a bit of gristle, which honestly just proves it’s real, quality meat. Overall, it was a great experience, and it’s definitely a place I’d come back to again. If you’re craving a true Philly-style bite in western North Carolina, this spot is worth the visit.

First time here on vacation. Food was delicious, service was fast and atmosphere was good. We will definitely come back next time we are in town.

Update: We ended up bringing half of our sandwiches home with us. They reheated very well and tasted like they were just prepared.

The food was delicious. The peppers, onions and mushrooms taste fresh in the cheesesteak subs. The French fries are nicely seasoned and perfect crispy crunch.

Delicious! Had an original Philly with cheese wiz – tasted just like the ones I’d had in Philadelphia! The fries and onion rings were both fantastic. Friendly staff had great suggestions and the store was clean and filled with happy customers!

Came here to grab a quick bite to eat.
They have a good selection of the menu. The fries tasted good. I tried the Original Cheese steak Philly and the flavor was very good. The customer service was great.

I used to eat chicken wings there the best in town but I don’t go anymore because it’s so dirty. You can grease on the sidewalk in on the door right from the entrance. I think they only clean the inside. They decorate the door on holidays, but they don’t clean it beforehand. I’m sorry, but it doesn’t give the place a good impression.
