A special shoutout to Jamie, who served me and is also the owner. He was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and made the experience even better. You can tell he truly cares about his customers and the quality of the food.
Highly recommend this place if you’re in Thunder Bay and craving great fish and chips with awesome service!
Joey’s Seafood Restaurant in Thunder Bay is a hidden gem that’s hard to find but absolutely worth discovering. It’s a family-run spot that’s been serving the community for 25 years, managed by two brothers who are clearly passionate about great food.
I started my meal with the lobster bisque, which was outstanding. It had a rich, flavorful broth with visible pieces of lobster — a true testament to the kitchen’s quality. The seafood texture was spot-on, and the blend of spices made every spoonful delightful.
For my main, I went for the Shrimp Feast, which turned out to be an excellent choice. While it typically comes with one type of shrimp, my server, Deb, graciously offered to let me try two. I opted for the breaded shrimp and the shrimp scampi. Both were delicious: the breaded shrimp had a satisfying crunch, while the scampi was tender, garlicky, and packed with flavor. The shrimp were smaller to medium-sized, but the taste more than made up for the size. The meal also came with a fresh, crisp salad that balanced the richness of the seafood perfectly. It also came with rice, and since they had run out of brown rice, they kindly let me try the rice pilaf, which was very nice — beautifully seasoned and well-balanced.
What made the experience even more memorable was the hospitality. Deb was attentive and personable throughout the meal. I also had the chance to chat with one of the owners, who even invited me into the kitchen to meet his brother, the chef. Their warmth and pride in their work were evident.
If you’re looking for a laid-back, unpretentious spot with top-notch seafood, Joey’s is the place. It’s not fancy, but the food is exceptional, the service is genuine, and the experience is well worth the visit. I’ll definitely be coming back.
