If you’re exploring Southwest Detroit and want a truly authentic meal, you have to check out Los Altos. It’s not one of the huge, flashy places on the main drag; it feels more like you’re stepping into a family-run spot in Mexico, and the food is absolutely incredible. The vibe is super welcoming and colorful, with vibrant decor that makes the whole place feel lively and fun.
We came with a group, so we decided to go for the Botana Platter, and it was the best decision. It’s this massive platter loaded with fresh tortilla chips, beans, chorizo, perfectly grilled chicken and steak, and topped with gooey, melted cheese, avocado, and jalapeños. It’s basically the ultimate appetizer platter and could easily be a meal on its own. Everything on it was fresh and packed with flavor.
For my main, I had to try the puffy tacos. They were amazing – the shells were light and crispy but still a little chewy, and they were stuffed with seasoned ground beef and all the fixings. It’s so different from a standard hard or soft taco. The service was warm and friendly, making us feel right at home.
For a genuine taste of Mexican food in Detroit, Los Altos is a must-visit. It’s the kind of place you’ll want to come back to again and again. Don’t forget to grab some of their house-made salsa!
Food:
Birria / Goat and Pollo / Chicken Taco’s: Best food in the order. I liked that the Pollo had an herb-lemon flavor. Birria’s juicy as you eat. I always liked lamb, & goat became something I like more.
Los Altos gave corn tortillas in separate aluminum foil. It kept the tortillas dry. They did that so nicely. Also, the cilantro . . . So good! I appreciated the setup in the container.
Arroz / Rice is awesome. It’s nice with the dinner/lunch & on its own. One thing I found is the sauces. Both are spicy. A cooler sauce with the hottest sauce might’ve helped me.
Packaging & Service: ️
For DoorDash, everything arrived. Included everything & arrived hot.
Really, I take 1 star, because the beans weren’t as expected in both the Birria & Pollo dinner sets. I found the bean side flavorless + not filled with bacon, which isn’t usually the case with past experiences in other Taqueria places.
Other stuff: It would be cool to see shredded chicken over the crumbled chicken. Might also when getting tacos for myself; start requesting no side of vegetable stuff.
Overall: Liked Los Altos. The DoorDash meals were authentic, with nice, filling main dishes + fine sides. I’d get it again.
