A Taste of Home ✨

Extremely happy with this experience!!!!
Hands down, one of the best places for non-vegetarian Maharashtrian food.

The fish was absolutely outstanding so flavorful and deeply satisfying. Honestly, it’s one of the best fish dishes I’ve had since coming to the US.

We tried the stuffed pomfret, surmai fry, rice bhakri, chicken gravy, and chicken kebabs, and every single dish was delicious.
Each bite brought back memories of India.

If you’re craving authentic coastal Maharashtrian food, Surmai is a must-visit.
Highly recommended! ❤️ ️

Surmai is the best place in the area if you’re craving authentic Maharashtrian fish. Honestly, I’ve had fish in Kokan, Maharashtra, and Surmai still surprised me. The flavors are that good.

Must-orders:
• Surmai rava fish fry
• Pomfret rava fish fry
• Kolambi rava fry

The underrated hero here is the bhakri. You get two in one order, and it’s the perfect combo with the fish fry.

I’ve tried a few thalis and they’ve all been great. Even the chicken thali is nice, but I’d personally stick to fish here. Egg curry was average and a bit oily for my taste, so I wouldn’t recommend that.

Staff is very helpful and I keep coming back whenever I’m craving fish. Weekends can have a wait, but other days are usually fine. Solkadhi is to die for. Also, plenty of parking.

The Shivalkar family serves homestyle, high-quality Maharashtrian-Konkani dishes at ‘Surmai’. Anyone who wants to experience truly authentic Maharashtrian chicken, mutton, or fish curries must visit this place.

We ordered the Special Thali and the Prawn Thali. The Special Thali came with tandlachi bhakri (rice bhakri), rice, tambda-paandhra rassa, mutton masala, chicken masala, prawn fry and Solkadi. The Prawn Thali included fish kaalvan (fish curry), prawn masala, prawn fry, and dal along with bhakri, rice and Solkadi.

The mutton masala and fish kaalvan had a deep, traditional Konkani flavor, while the chicken masala and prawn fry were equally outstanding. We loved the tambda-paandhra rassa so much that we ordered an extra serving.
The biggest challenge in an Indian non-vegetarian meal is getting perfectly cooked mutton and fresh fish — and ‘Surmai’ excels effortlessly in both.

We ended up eating here for two days straight. A member of the Shivalkar family is always present at the restaurant, personally supervising every dish being prepared. The cheerful service by Trelly on both days is something we’ll remember for long. The cleanliness, service, and overall atmosphere are truly commendable.

Anyone who wants to enjoy rich, authentic Konkani non-veg food should definitely visit Surmai — this is our heartfelt recommendation.

We tried this Maharashtrian Coastal Food restaurant in Sunnyvale and were quite happy with the food being served here.

The ambience is nothing much to write home about but reasonably clean.

We had fried special and surmai along with sol kadi. The surmai thali and pandari rassa with rice bhakri as the main dishes.

All items were well made. We would have however, liked the rassa in both the thalis and wish it was customisable and to be more flavourful and tasty akin to the traditional coastal preparation.

The service was quick and efficient!

We visited Surmai Indian Seafood Restaurant in Sunnyvale in Dec 2024 and had a delightful experience exploring authentic coastal Indian flavors.

Dishes We Tried:
* Special Thali: This was an absolute feast! The thali included a variety of flavorful dishes like fish curry, sol kadhi, rice, chapati, and a mix of sides. Each component was bursting with authentic Konkani and Malvani flavors. The fish curry stood out with its perfect balance of spices, and the sol kadhi was refreshing and tangy. It truly showcased the depth of coastal Indian cuisine.
* Pomfret Fry: The pomfret was cooked to perfection–crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a flavorful spice blend that enhanced the fish without overpowering its natural taste.
* Mango Ice Cream: A fantastic way to end the meal! The mango ice cream was creamy and rich with an authentic mango flavor that wasn’t overly sweet. It provided a refreshing finish to a bold and flavorful meal.

Ambiance:
The restaurant has a casual and inviting vibe, perfect for enjoying a hearty meal with friends or family. The decor is simple but reflects the coastal theme well.

Service:
The staff was friendly and attentive, ensuring that our dining experience was seamless. The food arrived promptly, and they were happy to explain the dishes to us.

Overall:
Surmai Restaurant is a must-visit for seafood lovers and anyone looking to explore authentic coastal Indian cuisine. The special thali and pomfret fry were both outstanding, and the mango ice cream was the perfect finishing touch.

Highly recommended for anyone in Sunnyvale craving bold and authentic Indian seafood dishes!

This place truly hits your cravings. The bhakri was really soft and fresh, and the fish curry felt so homely — it absolutely hit the spot. The fish was mouthwatering, perfectly spiced, and had a great crisp texture. The tomato curry was delicious as well.

We also got the prawn fry, and it was perfect. Honestly, it was a 10/10 experience. Too bad I was just visiting SF, otherwise I’d be coming here all the time!

The pomfret rava fry, prawn rava fry, and kingfish rava fry were absolutely scrumptious. The kokum sarbat was unmissable, we even got some to go. The prawn masala and chicken masala with bhakri were delicious too and instantly reminded me of Goan food. The service was excellent, thanks to Trely for making the experience even better.
