CASH ONLY. Found out after waiting 22 min for a table. What are you going to do? Thank God there is an ATM machine in house but I was sweating worried that I may have to wash dishes after the machine won’t dispense my money after 3 tries… called my bank and retried— it worked. Machine charged me $1.75 atm service fees but at this point it is whatever…
Checked in at 10:07am on that clipboard outside and finally got food on table around 11am.
It’s one of those places people don’t mind and ‘feel privileged’ to wait for a spot to dine.
There’s nothing wrong having to wait at a popular restaurant but just know this isn’t a get in get out place – especially if you have kids or elderly who may not do well waiting, standing in the cold.
They offer free hot chocolate and coffee outside – nice gesture – while you wait.
Parking is tricky.
Food is generous portion and yummy.
Worse thing besides not able to use credit card is ONE unisex restroom for the entire restaurant. You kidding me? Some patron started banging on the door while I was in the stall Lovely.
Prices on the high side ($16-19.99) if you order the set plates. You can order make your own breakfast for just standard eggs and toast for around $8-10. But that defeats the whole purpose of enjoying the breakfast here.
The wheat thing and baked apple were unique and delicious.
Went there on a Sunday morning. A local friend recommended.

Super friendly staff and home-y vibes. I love their cream of wheat, it was so delicious and buttery. Not too many places serve cream of wheat. The pancakes and French toast was also really delicious. Recommend 10/10. I went during the week and it was pretty empty.

Super food, super friendly staff, super atmosphere outside in the summer for breakfast. So much good stuff to say. Got the 3 scrambled eggs, with taters and linguica. Delicious. We also had the French toast which was the best we had ever had. Bread seemed so fresh and melted in your mouth. Also had the stuffed strawberry French toast which was awesome. But I like the plain French toast with maple syrup the best just because of the pure flavor. But it was all good. Had cinnamon cream of wheat, fruit cup, sausage links and patty and all was good. Links had a very good flavor to them. They also brought out a basket of buttered toast on fresh bread and a sweet cake like bread. It was so delicious. Everyone was friendly and helpful and loved explaining the Portuguese parts of the breakfast. Highly recommend this place for breakfast. Wish we here longer to go back and try the Azores breakfast.

I was so pleasantly surprised by this place. What a fantastic choice of menu items. The food was executed perfectly. My husband and I ordered the Eggs Benedict with ham and spinach (exceptional hollandaise, very hard to come by. Right on viscosity and flavor), wheat pancakes with fresh berries (the fruit was actually fresh and ripe), Spanish omelette with home fries, and morcella sausage. I really appreciated the small details like the homemade jam that came with the homemade buttered toast, and the mini glass bottle of vermont maple syrup I ordered as a side. Lovely job guys. This place was a real find and I can’t wait to order again!

This restaurant is a hidden gem in the city. The grapevine covered courtyard is really lovely in the summer, it’s very pleasant to sit outside in the shade with gentle breeze. Comfortable seating, pleasant and relaxing music.
Very good service, fresh and tasty food in generous portions, very reasonable prices.
Very good experience overall 🙂

Came here for breakfast with my work colleagues and initially was not hopeful to find hearty vegan options given the Portuguese cuisine. At first, I didn’t see anything on the regular menu, but luckily I asked our server and they referred me to the Vegan Breakfast Special they had! It was so delightful I was shocked- super filling, protein-rich, creative, balanced, and tasty meal of beans and rice, fried plantain, spinach, broccoli, mushroom, tomato, and tofu medley, plus home fries, and a fruit cup to start off with! I was so glad to see a dedicated vegan option clearly labeled. I hope this can become a permanent menu item. Thank you, Neighborhood Restaurant for your accommodation!

Huge portions, I eat a lot and I can split a meal with my partner here EASILY. This place is RIGHT off the bus. Parking is not so easy but that’s Somerville. I picked up my food like 2.5 hours after I ordered (busy morning) and the food tasted like it just came off the stove. 12/10 taste and portions. If you don’t want to get a $20 meal, you can build your own for cheaper and it’s still 12/10 taste and portions. The people are so home-y, you can tell the Neighborhood has its roots in community. When I dined in the other day with my partner, we split a meal and they brought us an extra side of cream of wheat, unprompted. That was a simple, wonderful gesture from our server that told me that the restaurant’s values are easily in the people. I can’t stress how good the food is. Also, it’s not always insanely busy and really easy to eat at during their off-peak hours. Wonderful spot, loving staff.

It’s been over 13 years since my last review of Neighborhood Café. I have to say it was a pleasure to see some familiar faces because I haven’t been there in at least 5 or so years. Trust me, it wasn’t because of the food and service; it was an old friend I no longer associate with–this was their favorite place, and now that they moved away, it’s mine again. Jalayne, one of the twins who’s been there for at least a decade, was our server and she remembered me, so that was wonderful.
Service was still great and even though Yum is next door, I feel you cannot beat the service and food of this mom-and-pop restaurant. I ordered the build-your-own omelette and my wife had the Cajun breakfast. I love the fresh-squeezed orange juice and the environment. The food came out in a reasonable time and it was just as great as I remembered it. Thank you, Jalayne, for making our visit so wonderful.

The cream of wheat was delicious. The portions were large, so consider sharing. The fruit of the season isn’t a regular fruit bowl, but rather a poached apple which we weren’t a big fan of. Wait times for seating were long, as was the wait for food, but definitely worth it. The outdoor patio is covered in grape vine, which you can enjoy. Very pretty esthetic and delicious food.
