We went all-out at the bar here, and it did not disappoint. The cocktails were outrageously good, as were the skewers. The sashimi was decent (not the best, but the menu suggested coming Thu-Sat for that) but small in portion size. The small plates were similarly amazing, and the sake selection was also excellent. If you’re going to get one drink here, get the “Well-behaved and Fully Clothed.”

Perfect date night dinner! Thoroughly enjoyed all our drinks and food. Robatayaki skewers (chicken, wagyu, and shishito peppers), zensai edamame, and izakaya pork gyōza were delectable! Highly suggest the house sake. Definitely recommend! (the entrance was not super obvious, and there are lots of stairs – just follow the music and you’ll get there eventually)

Umami is a lively Japanese izakaya known for fresh, creative sushi and flavorful small plates like karaage, takoyaki, and skewers that are perfect for sharing. We tried three different skewers (wagyu beef, quail eggs, and Japanese eggplant) which were delicious. The staff was very knowledgeable about the menu, drink options, and specials providing a great experience. The atmosphere is cozy, dimly lit, and energetic with a speakeasy-style vibe tucked away right off butler st on 38th st. Its great for date nights (we went to adult night at the science center after) and we will definitely be returning to sample the rest of the menu.

This is such a great place to get sushi and just enjoy a great vibe. Everything was fresh, staff was excellent and the over all atmosphere was great. It does get crowded and seating is so close, keep that in mind when going. Definitely make a reservation!

Umami is amazing, everything thing we have had there is well done, even if it is a dish you don’t usually order. I recommend getting multiple small dishes to share to maximize trying as much as possible. Also, if it’s just a reservation for 2, try sitting at the main bar or sushi bar, it’s often a better experience than a table which seems more crowded.

My girlfriend took me to Umami for my birthday and it was amazing. The food was absolutely delicious, and our server Chloe made my birthday feel really special—she was friendly and attentive. It was such a great experience all around. I’ll definitely be back!

Beautiful spot with great vibes. Absolutely loved the ramen on a chilly day. Fun variety of both food and drinks. We were there on a Friday night when there was a DJ set up. Was impressed that they were able to have the DJ in small space without in infringing on ability to hear date – but it worked!
