My first dinner in Decorah was at Dan Joses Family Mexican Restaurant, a small Tex-Mex spot almost directly across the street from the hotel. It’s not a big place, but it carries an impressive 4.5-star Google rating, so I decided to give it a try.
There was a comfortable amount of people inside — not crowded, not empty — fitting for Election Night in the U.S. I ordered the chicken fajitas, but before the main course arrived, I was served a generous basket of tortilla chips and salsa. The salsa was bold, spicy, and lively, though a bit too heavy on the coriander for my personal taste.
The fajitas themselves were slightly above average. Not the best I’ve had, but far from the worst. The chicken, onions, and peppers were all cooked well, and I cleaned my plate — which even earned me a cheerful, “You did a really great job there!” from the staff.
Price before tip: $20, which is perfectly reasonable.
Overall? A solid, no-nonsense Tex-Mex meal. Nothing extraordinary, but good enough.
A clear 3/5.

Ordered the steak fajitas, the flavor was really good but the amount of meat was extremely lacking. Ate a large part of the onions/peppers and still had a pile leftover after finishing the small amount of meat. Service was great but for the price this meal needs to be better.

Long time visitor, this place makes you feel like you’re being welcomed into a home. Service is outstanding, food is fantastic (im addicted to their shredded beef) and the atmosphere is great for a little place to grab a bite. My girlfriend says the margaritas are the absolute BEST in the tri state area…she wouldn’t lie. 10/10 highly recommend

I went to get Mexican in my hometown. When I went to pick up my food they place was packed. I liked my food – it was also a very big portion for the price. People seemed to like the place. If I could I would give 4.25 rating.

Excellent food, fast friendly service with indoor and outdoor dining. We stayed in Decorah one night on our way to South Dakota and had dinner at Don Jose Family Mexican restaurant. If passing through the area, I highly recommend it.

Everything was great, food was amazing, the staff was friendly, the place was clean, and the food came out at an efficient time…i felt as if the staff went above and beyond for my child as well…they made sure her plate wasn’t hot as the plates usually come out very hot, they even gave my daughter her own water cup without ice without having to ask!! restaurants rarely acknowledged my toddler so that was nice
the vibes are also so cute !!
