My wife and I had an excellent experience and meal here on 3/7/26. The ambiance was nice and the space felt cozy. Our servers name was Anya, and she was excellent! We started with the onions tarte which was an excellent balance of sweat and savory. I ended up getting the lamb as it was new to the menu that evening and my wife got the steak Diane, both were phenomenal. Of course we ended with dessert (toffee pudding and the mignardises). We will definitely be back to again in the future. If you are looking for a sign to try this place, this is it!

Café Monette is a truly special dining experience. With a thoughtfully curated, small, seasonal changing menu focused on locally sourced ingredients, every dish is made in-house and prepared to absolute perfection. The open kitchen adds to the experience—you can see the care, precision, and pride that goes into each plate.
Whether you’re seated at the intimate bar or at one the beautiful set dining tables, the atmosphere is warm, refined, and spotlessly clean. The staff is attentive, knowledgeable, and clearly very experienced, guiding the evening without ever feeling intrusive. The French-inspired dishes are beautifully presented and impeccably balanced, showing both technical skill and restraint.
Nestled in the Hallmark-like picturesque town of St. Albans, VT—30 minutes north of Burlington and an hour south of Montreal—it’s no surprise Café Monette is now drawing guests from other regions. Reservations are highly recommended, and well worth it.

A hidden gem located in the beating heart of downtown Saint Albans Vermont, Café Monette both surprises and delights in all the right ways. The atmosphere is a cozy mix of small town cafe with uptown decor but in no overbearing or pretentious manner. The staff are welcoming, friendly, and go out of their way to answer any questions you have about the dishes or even the kitchen (including the layout and cleaning rituals). The food itself is nothing short of superb and every bite tastes like it was made in Grandma’s kitchen with love. The ingredients are fresh, the plating excellent, and the flavor pairings are what you would expect from this chef owned restaurant that clearly holds itself to a high standard. So if you’re looking for that special date night out, memorable dinner, or you just want to treat yourself, consider having a seat at Café Monette and conversing with their crew.

I booked for my husband’s 40th, which also was our first real date solo night since we had our little dude, so we were already just excited to be there.
We love French style restaurants & food (we go to Montreal ALOT), and this place was on our “need to go immediately” lists after our friends raved about it.

Upon arrival, we were wowed by the most perfect pastries and bread sitting in the window in the entryway. I saw canneles and immediately knew we were in for a real treat. I’ve only ever had one at one other place in Vermont (which is no longer around), and never see them here. They’re one of my absolute favorite pastries.

We checked in with the host and were VERY surprised when she said they had the chefs table ready for us. We both work in the industry ourselves (I’m a chef, my husband manages FOH) so we appreciated that beyond words. Dinner AND a show??! Sign me up.

It was great to watch them work, so CLEAN and cohesively together. Beautiful kitchen set up chefs!

After we sat for a bit and checked over the menu,
(A fantastic wine list BTW, orange wine offerings made my heart sing) we watched the chefs do their magic and watched plates go out, we were greeted by one of the chefs with amuse of the cheese puffs. HOLY SHIT. Those were incredible.

Anyway…we chose two apps and two entrees to split (beef tartare special they had & scallops for apps, and trout almondine & the duck sausage)

Chef came with our apps to the table and we immediately were blown away. The chefs saw our reactions to our first bites and did the cute little mind blown gesture and laughed with us through the glass as we gave VERY enthusiastic thumbs up. I put that tartare on par with the one from garde manger (MTL), the scallops were buttery and luxurious. The bread was great to sop up the sauce.

Then they surprised us with a small plate of the stroganoff. Between courses. Again, WOW. The gnocchi was light, fluffy and the sauce was decadent, cozy. That plate is a warm hug, and I hope that’s on the menu next time because I need a full plate of that

Then our entrees came out. That duck sausage??? Unreal. The beans? Go CRAZY. It was soo comforting and satisfying. Perfect on a cold night.
The trout was light but so luxurious. Perfectly cooked and seasoned.

We ended our meal with a “French toast” and the crepes Suzette with a special “remix” they offered with the best rum raisin ice cream ever, my husband joked and asked if I requested them to make it because his absolute favorite, and apparently the chefs too. They also gave him a special tasting plate of other desserts as a birthday treat.

We were blown away with the caliber of service, food, and atmosphere of this place, everything is immaculate. It’s super approachable fine dining, and honestly we thought the prices were beyond reasonable. Everything from the decor, plates & flatware, the way the kitchen is set up, the bar is set up…everything in this place was done with soo much intention and attention to detail. Saint Albans has a real gem here. We are already looking forward to coming back and seeing what delicious surprises await us. The recent James bead nomination is VERY well deserved! I hope we finally see a Michelin star in our tiny state some day…this place is on that path.

All the rave reviews about Cafe Monette are true – the best meal I’ve had in ages! Everything was beautifully presented, service was impeccable, and the flavors are glorious.
We had the onion tart (puff pastry, Boursin, and sweet, jammy onions) and beet salad (earthy beets, creamy goat cheese , and bright, fresh herbs) as starters.
Main courses were the duck confit sausage and the house made gnocchi with squash. The gnocchi was crispy on the outside and light somehow. Yum.
Desserts were sticky toffee pudding and their French Toast – which is a beautifully baked canelé on maple pot de creme with a warm maple drizzle. Stunningly good – do not miss it.
Can’t wait to go back!

My partner and I have been excitedly awaiting Café Monette’s opening for over a year and the wait was so worth it. The space is light, airy, and so inviting. You can see the attention that went into the details, down to the lovely French cutlery. We were seated promptly (reservations highly encouraged) at the table right next to the window into the kitchen so I did spend the whole meal staring at the chefs creating immaculate plates. Everything we had was absolutely delicious and beautiful. The Onion Tarte Tatin was one of my favorite bites of food I’ve ever had. Both of our pasta dishes were perfectly Al dente and the balance of flavors were spot on. Of course dessert was fantastic as well; I appreciated our server bringing over little spoons so we could literally drink the Crème anglaise under our Opera cake. I cannot wait to go back again and again, Saint Albans is lucky to have a beautiful locally-driven spot like this putting out the highest quality food.

We were so excited to try this much-anticipated local addition on their opening week. The space is fresh and tidy, as many have mentioned, it’s clear much thought went into decorating the space; the fresh cut flowers bouquets set around were an especially lovely touch. The entry area is rather awkward for exit/entry if anyone is waiting for a table at the front, luckily we were seated quickly with reservations.

We ordered the bread and tarte tatin to start. The bread was crusty and flavorful but I wished so much it was served warm to really bring out it’s best properties. I was surprised by a fresh, but cool baguette, though I did love the crunchy, flaky salted butter. The real winner of the starters was the boursin, which was a lovely compliment to the sweet and crispy tarte tatin. For our meal we tried the curry scallops and the putinesca. I will only order pasta when it is made in house and this was delicious! Perfectly cooked and shaped just right to scoop all those salty, savory pieces. The sauce was less tomato forward and richer than my usual experience and the portion size was perfect. The curry mussels were amazing, but funnily enough, they tasted *nothing* like curry. If it hasn’t been for the color I wouldn never have attributed any amount of curry to them. Having said that, they weren’t remotely disappointing. They were beautifully cooked, so tender, and the flavor was rich and satisfying. Once you swipe the aioli around the edge…wow, absolutely delicious. It should read as a compliment that, while knowing it is the chef’s specialty, we wanted to try the dessert but were just too full! We saw some options being delivered and they all looked gorgeous. I’m excited to visit again and will definitely leave room next time! We finished with a perfect espresso, complete with the tiny spoons I always hope for.

The staff were charming and attentive, though I believe they were, in fact, short FOH that evening. It’s clear they are eager and striving to present a more elevated experience for the area. A small grievance with this in mind: when our server asked us to go up to pay at the counter, I was surprised. The rest of the experience was so lovely, to end it on counter service like your average diner really burst the bubble. I assume this might be easily attributed to being freshly opened and working out the kinks of many new systems and not the permanent intention. We will certainly be happy to come back and taste our way through the rest of the menu!

As the youths say, this place slaps. The menu is focused/thoughtful and not overcrowded – this is one of those places where you’ll want to say “one of everything, please!” I don’t think you can go wrong with whatever you pick, though, because everything we got was fantastic. From the bread, to the onion tart (must), to the duck confit sausage, the food was both refined and down to Earth. I would have taken more pictures, but I was too busy eating. Also, I’m no wine expert, but the glass of orange I got paired really well with the whole meal.

These guys know what they’re doing. You should go here. You will not be disappointed.
