We’ve been visiting Oyaji for many years—maybe not every week, but once every month or two. The husband-and-wife owners are always hard-working, welcoming, and genuinely friendly to their guests. The sushi is consistently excellent, and their tempura is easily some of the best in town.
But what really sets Oyaji apart is the sense of comfort you feel every time you visit. Today, I came in for lunch after being away for work for several months—and to my surprise, the lady owner had kept my water bottle, which I thought I had lost months ago, just waiting for me to return! That small gesture perfectly captures the care and thoughtfulness of this place.
If you live in Richmond Hill—or are planning to visit—do yourself a favor and check it out. These are the kinds of local gems we should all support.
I was disappointed by the lack of flavour and good texture of the tuna and salmon. These are the most typical fish you can get in any sushi restaurant and they were of poor quality. They were completely tasteless–it felt like I was eating water, and it was weird bc one grouping of the salmon was okay and gave me hope, but the other grouping was absolutely flavourless. Also, the sashimi pieces were so thick that I was always trying to chew through some sort of tendon/string. There are times when thick sashimi is welcomed, like when it’s fresh or flavourful, so this was just the wrong application. On the bright side, the sushi rice was really well-seasoned so the nigiri were not bad. They also did include some more unique items like takowasabi and uni (but the uni tasted a bit off, and my bf had diarrhea later that night lol) so I can see that they’re trying.
I would probably go to another sushi restaurant before trying Oyaji again, but maybe their cooked dishes or rolls are what we should be trying instead.

It’s quite roomy inside compared to a small entrance. Customer service is spectacular! They are nice, friendly & suggesting great dishes. Portion is good. I got unagi rice and it was a bit much for me. Sushi & sashimi are fresh & delish. I’d like to come back to it more .
I tried to order their food on uber eats. Somehow it’s not as impressive as indoor experience!
I don’t like sushi, but my sushi-loving friends are big fans of this place. I tried their chicken udon, Japchae, and fried ice cream, and they were good.
If you’re looking for fresh sushi, try this little restaurant.
Jenny was so considerate and provided us with excellent customer service. As we were leaving, the sushi chef even acknowledged us.
When we opened our food, we were astonished by how beautifully presented the sushi was. Ingredients were fresh, perfect amount of rice, and the tempura shrimp was crunchy.
The calamari was fried to perfection. It was not oily and was the perfect texture.
The miso soup was flavourful and rich. It was very comforting on this rainy day.
Overall, we are definitely glad we stopped by. Highly recommend visiting if you’re looking for delicious Japanese/Korean cuisine.
