Social Profile:

Since 1988, Gritty McDuff’s has been creating fine, handcrafted ales and traditional pub fare. From our humble beginnings as a small brew pub in Portland’s Old Port, we’ve grown to become the brew pub of choice for Mainers and folks from away. From the start, Gritty’s was at the forefront of the brewing renaissance in the Maine. Founders Ed Stebbins and Richard Pfeffer had two simple goals in mind: to create a brew pub that will be a pioneer in Maine Craft Beer serving fresh ales and great food, and to have fun doing it!

Family-friendly brewpub offering American eats & housemade beer in down-to-earth digs.

Stopped in for a beer after dinner. Love the space! Great friendly staff! Didn’t order any food but it looked great!! Had the hazy IPA and it was perfection!

This was a frustrating experience but they did make it right in the end.
I stopped in to make a takeout order because the online system isn’t allowing payment information to be added. Went back to pickup the order and had to wait about 15 minutes from when I was told it was to be ready. Got home to a terrible looking pizza and cold sandwich, took the pizza back.
Cathy apologized and had the pizza and sandwich remade, provided a $25 gift card for the inconvenience and provided a cider to drink while I waited.
Finally got home with well made food an hour and a half after the initial order (only live about 5 minutes away so not much travel time).
Look at the pictures and compare the pizzas.

Edited review: in town for a weekend wedding from out of state and dined here on Friday evening, 9/26/25. Food and service was actually great. However, I paid my check with my bank debit card and wrote “cash” in tip section as I left a generous cash tip over 20%. Check was for total $86.02. Upon checking our bank statement online we found we were debited $100.02 (an extra $14 with no explanation). UPDATE 10/01/25: after my initial review, management responded with an apology and stated that the $14 tip was applied in error by my server and they now credited my account back that $14 overcharge. Again, We enjoyed our visit with Gritty’s and I appreciate the quick response and correction. Just be aware of potential non-disclosed charges. I personally handed my server her cash tip, yet told now after noticing the extra charge she added a tip in error, after getting my receipt without it. ‍♂️

This place was a great find along the river in auburn. Tons of indoor seating, big bar, live music, good beer selection, small outside area overlooking the river and river walk.

The menu is good, it took awhile to get the food and there weren’t that many people there but we were not in a rush. The food was worth the wait: lobster roll was great, lobster tacos were yummy and pulled pork sandwich was great! Their fries are also good. We will be back.

Fun little pub to get a drink. They have cool theme nights. Really good brews in tap. The staff are great and do a good job serving. Had a great time visiting here.

Not Disability Friendly

Came in on Sunday. The bar tender immediately told me “Dogs aren’t allowed in here” which is NOT how to talk to someone with a service dog.
He tend asked about her vest AND for paperwork which is wildly illegal and not okay.
I brought this to the attention via email of who I assume is the manager who basically said “Sorry” and that they’ll allegedly better train staff.
Overall I’m pretty icked out by all of this.

Hadn’t been there in well over 2 years and I found it to be satisfactory.
The ladies room was dirtier than before. The metal doors were in desperate need of being cleaned, they used to be a shiny silver and now they look like they were covered in some kind of mold or brown rust or something that actually came off on my finger when I touched it.
I always judge a restaurant by the bathrooms, cause if what you can see is dirty then imagine what you can’t see.
Other than that, the food was mediocre, and the drinks were the normal pour.

Came to town on business and the Tavern was close to our hotel. Everything that we had here was very good. They offer a good selection of food choices that are all made in house. We were so impressed that everyone wanted to come back the next day.

Great place with a view!

Grab a table outside by the river walk, but do yourself a favor and walk first, then eat and drink.

This place has some heavy food and large portions, add in several beers and you will hate yourself for having stuffed yourself yet again.

The food is typical bar food, but on the higher end in quality, you certainly can find worse wings and fries.

The staff are friendly and quick. Not over the top service, but also no complaints.

The place is pretty big, lots of indoor seating, a large bar, and out door sitting. I think there’s an outdoor lower level as well?

Stopped in for a local experience on our visit from Georgia. The food was great, and had a nice pub atmosphere. Our server Angela made us feel welcome and took good care of us.The build your own burger and fish and chips were great and the local beer choices were spot on. Great overall experience and worth the stop.
