Texas Icehouses have been a South Texas tradition since before the 1920’s. Before refrigeration, icehouses stored and distributed block ice for the neighborhood iceboxes. Over time, they diversified-iced beer, a little food, maybe some groceries- a cool, air-conditioned spot where neighbors come sit, talk, play dominos, turn up the juke box, maybe eat some chicken wings, dance on the slab outside. Once a vital part of everyday local culture- a cornerstone of every neighborhood in San Antonio and Houston. They are rapidly diminishing, an endangered species. Here at Lucy Cooper’s, we are bringing back the IceHouse with some of the coldest beers, great times and bar eats to be had in San Antonio.
Easygoing, sports-centric 21-&-older watering hole with outdoor fire pits & hearty bar fare.

TLDR: Food Was Hot.
First of all when you have a designated driver, they deserve a water, especially when you spend $60 on food and $20 on liquor. . The worst part about this place is that the owner is running around doing shots when she boils her ribs and flavors them with liquid smoke. Oh don’t forget the first plate that I sent back the skirt steak and frites Yeah how does a skirt steak taste like shrimp? Absolutely disgusting if it’s gonna taste like a surf and turf there might as well be shrimp on it. Service is slow. The food is fake. I would rather eat McDonald’s. As a chef if I could give her one bit of advice, spend more time, putting love into your food and watching your kitchen and less time drinking with the patrons oh yeah, and that last shot of green tea you did was supposed to be for me, but you walked up and took the shot when I was halfway there what an owner don’t worry by the second plate I chewed what I could off the bone bc I was starving at that point
As the night went on, we got super hungry, and that’s when the real surprise hit. We started with fried okra and bacon, and I was blown away. The fried okra was perfectly crispy, paired with a homemade ranch that was simply irresistible. The bacon was sweet, cooked to perfection, and came hanging from a cool contraption—definitely a fun touch! The quesadilla we ordered next was out of this world. By the third dish, I knew the quality of the food was far beyond what I expected—it was clear these folks really care about what they serve and put so much love into every bite.
My friends and I came for a good time, but we ended up leaving with full bellies and a new favorite spot to visit more often. But the night didn’t end there. Lucy, the owner (and the namesake of the restaurant), came by to serve us the best fried chicken in San Antonio—and quite possibly all of Texas! She wasn’t kidding when she said the bucket of fried chicken would be life-changing and spiritually awakening. It was absolutely the best fried chicken I’ve had since living in Georgia!
Lucy’s hospitality was second to none. She personally checked on every guest, and her staff followed suit, making us feel like we were family. To top it off, we ordered her special beignets, which were to die for.
When it was time to leave, Lucy herself was at the door, sending us off with a smile. This place has quickly become one of my top spots, all from just one visit. They’re committed to elevated service and food, and the use of beef tallow for frying is a game changer—it not only makes everything taste amazing but is also a healthier choice. Don’t forget to try their homemade sauces, especially the hot sauce! I truly hope everyone gives this place a try—you’re missing out if you don’t.
There are big screens all over the place with multiple games on so you don’t have to miss anything. Outside, they have several fire pits with spacious seating. There is plenty of parking and getting in and out of this location is pretty easy traffic wise. The service was great as well. We had a party of ten people with uscsnd everyone was taken care of. Our server, “Macy” did a great job taking care of us!
We tried the cheeseburger eggrolls and they were disgusting, mushy and tasteless, super gross, we brought them home to our dog. The wings were pretty good, fairly large, not overcooked and tasty enough. The unsweetened tea, was tea, no lemon offered and we had to ask for sweetener.
The service was good, but the music was practically impossible to hear, especially with all of the garage style doors open. The firepits seemed like a cute idea.
Overall, not great but okay to try something new.
Thanks so much Jayda for ensuring I had a solid birthday!
Can’t wait for Wednesday and dirty bingo!
Foodwise, in general everyone liked their food and the presentation was very good across the board. My fries looked great, but were cold and had little to no spice on them, so that was disappointing. The menu had lots of great-sounding sandwich choices, but just had to try the Brunch Donut Burger based on the name alone. It’s a heart attack on a plate: 2 1/4 lb patties, cheese, hash browns, egg, and bacon on two full glazed donuts. I know, it’s crazy. Wouldn’t order again, but it was worth trying. The sweet goes fairly well with the rest, though it, too, could use more seasoning and sauce. That would have made a difference.
Overall, want to go back just as a couple and see how it is with a full staff on board. Could have been worse, and again, the staff was friendly and the venue itself was good for a large group. Music was LOUD, though, so man, be prepared to shout.
