First time visiting this location was after a football game and on a Sunday. The food was delicious, generous portions, served hot and not too long of a wait considering they were very busy. We had leftovers- LOL. Our server was friendly, attentive and quick to bring us whatever we asked for at the time. The BBQ sauce on the ribs was flavorful and tasty. The Loaded nachos (pictured) were well worth the price and will fill you up. I ordered the ribs, and this order did not disappoint. The only drawback would be that I received a menu with pizza sauce on it, and I thought the restaurant needed a bit more lighting. Overall, the experience was wonderful, and I would definitely visit this location again. My visit was in early November 2025.

Shield’s Restaurant Bar serves Detroit-style deep-dish square pizza. We visited on a Friday for lunch after spending the morning at the Detroit Institute of Arts and were looking for a Detroit Pizza. The restaurant has a nostalgic feel, loaded with sports memorabilia, fun pictures, quotes, and TVs. Service was fast, friendly, and upbeat. We called ahead for a Greek salad and a Detroit pizza, and it was ready soon after our arrival. The salad was top-notch, and the pizza was high quality; however, it was undercooked and doughy. Next time, we’ll make sure to have our pie cooked a couple of minutes extra.

We did a lot of research for the best spot to get Detroit style pizza and it was a toss up between here and Buddy’s. We are SO glad we stopped in here!
Service was impeccable! Bella and her trainee JJ were so kind and were very helpful with our indecisiveness. They made us feel like family!
The pizza…amazing is not a strong enough word. We built our own with half veggie, half pepperoni and jalapenos on the side with the spicy gold medal sauce. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs and we also ordered the cheesy bread and wings (also very, very good)
Atmosphere is fantastic and a great vibe. Good drinks and people!

Amazing service and atmosphere. Staff were very nice and accommodating, and the manager complimented our Halloween costumes! Enjoyed the decor inside and all. Admittedly I did not do my research on the type of pizza served— so unfortunately the food was not for me. Bread sticks and wings looked amazing though!! Would definitely go back to try other things.

I’m very disappointed with my experience at Shield’s Restaurant on Woodward ave I’ve been served bad food twice, and the second time was even worse. The fish was old, tasted spoiled, and was over-fried in dirty grease — that’s why it wasn’t the usual golden brown like it used to be.
When I mentioned it to the manager, He refused giving the money back said the fish was supposed to be dark brown — but anyone who knows good fish knows that’s not true. Fish should never be dark brown or taste spoiled.
It’s upsetting to spend money on food that’s not fresh and then be dismissed when you try to address it. I won’t be returning, and I hope they start taking quality and customer concerns seriously.

The complaints about ordering food and it coming wet are true. I have ordered twice now and I normally love their food but we typically come in person. My pizza was soggy and the dough was not fully cooked through. The service hasn’t been the greatest the last few times we came. When you advertise “mandatory” 20% tips but then say it can be taken off it just puts you in an uncomfortable position. Not to mention, if I wouldn’t have read these reviews I wouldn’t have known it wasn’t mandatory. When servers expect no one to complain about the auto gratuity they don’t care about the service knowing their gonna get tipped regardless. I always tip. I was a waitress for 8 years. But I just feel like dining in is not that great and neither is ordering delivery.. maybe take out?

Need some deep-dish Detroit-style pizza while in Detroit? Can’t speak for any others, but Shield’s does a respectable pie, and they had a few draft beers available, too, along with their full bar. Everything was more reasonable than expected, bill-wise. Everybody was full of effort, beyond eager to serve, and appreciative of the business. Vibe was fine. A mix of a pizza parlor and a bar, and in some old bank building or something?
