The Hydra is Sandpoint’s original steakhouse, since 1974. Now locally owned by the fourth generation of Sandpoint natives. We are known for our slow roasted Prime Rib we serve seven days a week, wide selection of seafood and chicken entrees, and of course, our expertly prepared steak. We offer a full bar, with house made signature cocktails and martinis. The bar and lounge is the perfect place to sit for a kids free evening, or just to enjoy an appetizer and cocktail. Our dining room is very family friendly, with a customized kids menu. We offer many tucked away tables that are perfect for a special anniversary or date night for two. We had such a wonderful experience dining at The Hydra Steakhouse in Sandpoint! From the moment we walked in, we were charmed by the warm, cozy atmosphere. The rustic wooden chairs and tables gave it a cabin-like feel, and the vintage artwork and quirky decor made the space feel both inviting and unexpectedly spacious.

Our server, Brennan, truly made the evening special. He was incredibly welcoming, attentive, and knowledgeable – with a positive energy that made us feel right at home.

As for the food. We were pleasantly impressed! I had the Herb Chicken with steamed green beans, and I can honestly say it was one of the best grilled chicken dishes I’ve ever had. Perfectly seasoned and juicy. I also have gluten and onion allergies, and they were more than accommodating, which was such a relief and made the experience that much more enjoyable.

My husband had the Fire Grilled Salmon with mashed potatoes and green beans, and he raved about how perfectly it was cooked – crisp on the outside, flaky and tender on the inside. My father-in-law went with the Seafood Fettuccine and practically licked the plate clean .

But the grand finale? The Mud Pie – a house-made Oreo crust filled with mocha nut ice cream and topped with rich chocolate sauce. My husband, a true mud pie connoisseur, declared it possibly the best he’s ever had. Every “this is my last bite” turned into another.

The Hydra Steakhouse was a charming surprise and is a must if you’re in Sandpoint. We’ll absolutely be back!

My boyfriend got the ribeye and thought it was only ok.
I got their prime rib dip and it was phenomenal. Portions were huge and the French fries were crispy and delicious!

Excellent service. Waiter was attentive but stayed out of the way. Very professional. Prime rib was outstanding! The seasoning and the sear was perfect. Very tasty cocktails too. Price was what you’d expect for this quality.

We had an enjoyable dinner at Hydra Steakhouse! The service was fantastic even sitting in the lounge. We had shrimp cocktail to start, their homemade cocktail sauce is out of this world the extra hint of horseradish elevated the sauces flavor. We also had a filet with mashed potatoes and green beans, the filet is the best steak I’ve had in years, so tender. The green beans and mashed were phenomenal. We also had the Parmesan cod, it was not 100% up to our standards but we are extremely picky when it comes to fish. I would definitely recommend sticking to land instead of sea.

The food was excellent, once we finally were served. The place was half empty on a Sunday late afternoon. Three workers standing around in the fairly empty bar area. One directed us around the corner to the hostess. Having just entered from the patio area, we asked for a table outside. She said she didn’t think there was space but would go look. She came back and confirmed there was a table available. We sat down and about 15 minutes later, a server finally approached our table, even as a couple had been frequently attending to other tables. We ordered drinks and an appetizer. A while later, they finally arrived, together. The calamari was excellent. We both ordered burgers with fries. They too took much longer than expected. It was a nice evening and we enjoyed being outside. We were there around 2+ hours, far longer than planned for a simple meal in a fairly empty restaurant. While the food was delicious and the patio enjoyable, the service was severely lacking in punctuality. They were friendly, as a saving grace. Perhaps it had been a busy day and everyone was tired. Perhaps this is normal. Either way – excellent meal. Just plan extra time if you go there.

A place worth visiting! The layout of this restaurant is unique, making the dining experience very intimate and private. The prime rib was delicious. Tender and flavourful, cooked to perfection, and a huge portion. The peppercorn steak was also amazing. The only downside was the speed of the service which was on the fast side. Everything was so quickly delivered, and dessert came before I was even done eating the main course. I would have enjoyed it even more if there was some lingering time between courses, but the server was friendly and the full experience a pleasure.

Right off bat, I see some Harry Potter referances. Very nice atmosphere and the look of the gentleman that brought our food when we received it and I exclaimed wow. The prime rib was huge the food was wonderful. The biggest critic our Chi is right now enjoying some chicken. That tells you how good it was. She is sooo picky. You should definitely try this place. Come between lunch and dinner you will find a table.

Four of us met at 11am for my Auntie’s birthday lunch. Our food server Julia was friendly, informative and accommodating, including taking a group photo of us holding up the quilt I made for my Aunt. We all ordered a different item, including me who ordered something not on the Saturday lunch menu (Blackened Salmon sandwich – yum!). Food was delish, service was fab, and Auntie got a piece of complimentary Mud Pie that was bigger than she was!
The Hydra has been our family meeting place for decades, and yesterday didn’t disappoint in any way. Thank you Julia for making our family time memorable.

The Hydra never fails me. Have came many times. Oysters were huge and flavorful, Cucumber basil martini was refreshing, prime rib cooked to perfection (medium- rare). Then the carrot cake was delicious, moist, and big!
Julia was prompt an attentive to me as a single diner. Which I always appreciate. Told me all the good specials. Then when I had questions about around town, she went and got a local employee to answer my questions.
Clean tables, booths, and bathroom. Beautiful stained glass fixtures and accents throughout the restaurant. Easy listening classic rock makes it relaxing.

Fantastic steakhouse in downtown Sandpoint Idaho near the water. We were seated quickly and realized that the restaurant is really spread out into various rooms so no matter where you sit, you feel likely you’re in a quaint little steakhouse instead of a huge one.
The service is good and very knowledgable. We were given plenty of time to decide as there are so many good options on the menu. Some really fun specialty cocktails but they also make great standard ones as well.
I ordered the Ribeye medium rare and it was fantastic. The baked potato was amazing as well as the inside had the texture of mashed potatoes with a nice crispy skin. My daughter ordered the bacon cheeseburger and it was fantastic.
There are areas for wheelchair or ADA accessibility but would be hard to navigate the entire restaurant as there are steps scattered throughout.
It’s a nice, quite environment where you feel like you’re having a private conversation with friends or family but yet within a fairly large restaurant with many great food and drink options.
