their mentaiko pasta tasted SO GOOD. the onions were fragrant and sweet, enveloping the creamy sauce that coats the udon. its not so overly creamy and its flavor just punches ur taste buds. however what i taste is onions and not mentaiko so if you want mentaiko idk dude. it lowk tastes like chinese stir fry udon but its yummy so 4/5
next is their hayashi rice which tastes EXACTLY like egg tomato rice that we eat as chinese ppl but its 3 times sweeter than usual. while the flavor was there it didnt taste like hayashi rice. 3/5
overall 3.8/5
Bonus pics: roll, tonkatsu and saba from our first visit
That couldn’t be more true for Sen Zushi. I came for dinner twice in a row and sat at the counter eating copious amounts of nigiri. It brought back warm memories of doing the same thing in Japan. My standout was aburi toro nigiri.
The food was delicious, I especially enjoyed the teriyaki chicken and sushi. The croquettes were also super tasty! The included green tea was also very nice. Everything we ordered came out quickly. Service was good.
My only complaint is that the restaurant was borderline uncomfortably warm when we were there, not sure if this is typical.
The sushi here is fantastic, in my opinion. The sushi rice is nicely seasoned and the fish is well handled. I think their nigiri is a testament to this, and that the chirashi don is a worthwhile splurge.
For further reccomendations… the croquettes, grilled fish, seafood yaki udon, and tempura are all delicious. The first two remind me of my time in Japan! I also highly suggest the lunch bento boxes. They provide a good variety of options in one meal, and are filling without leaving you with that uncomfortable “too full” feeling.
I think Sen Zushi is fairly priced given its quality and variety of options. You can easily eat a meal here for $20 a person, though you can expect to pay closer to $30-50 each if you plan to get your fill of quality nigiri and sushi. Add another $20 each if doing drinks and dessert. Sen Zushi is definitely not the cheapest sushi spot in Victoria, but if cheap is what you are after, then there are plenty of lesser-quality sushi spots around the city to fit the bill.
I highly reccomend taking a picture of the special board when you walk in. It changes from time to time based on what ingredients are available. There is often rotating seasonal fish for nigiri and sashimi, unique dishes, and some great desserts. I loved the matcha churros!
The main dishes and sushi rolls are okay. Special rolls are really good there were no sits available so we sat at the sushi bar. But it was okay since the bar table was bigger than normal.
overall a 4.5 experience and recommended
Fast forward to 2025 and I’m finally back in Victoria for the first time in almost 12 years. I knew I had to go back to Sen Zushi because it loomed so large in my memory. I popped in for a late lunch on a Saturday and got a bento box.
I was not disappointed! Everything came flooding back as I ate my delicious bento. The tempura was perfectly cooked and the atmosphere was really top notch. I am so happy to see the business continuing to thrive after all these years. I hope to be back!
This is our favorite Japanese restaurant and have been going for a few years.
We always highly recommend Sen Zushi and have brought lots of our friends to have dinner with us. It’s always a hit.
