I had to go to Richmond today to take care of some business. I ran into Ironclad Coffee Roasters for a little breakfast and I was pleasantly surprised. The atmosphere was wonderful and so eclectic. The eggnog latte was delicious and the cherry almond scone was just as good. The servers were very friendly unwelcoming and they do a very good business. They have a very good variety of pastries and baked goods. They have quite a bit of seating and some very comfortable seating on sofas as well. I will be returning every time that I am in Richmond.

This place is a real highlight in Shockoe Bottom. It’s walking distance from the train station, and their drinks and pastries are well made and delicious. The vibes inside are excellent, with a variety of couches and chairs and an old shoe shine stand for seating.

A welcome FIVE-STAR coffee and brunch stop in Richmond to break up our drive from North Carolina to Maryland! Located in a historic 1884 fire station, Ironclad Coffee Roasters serves outstanding coffees, creative drinks, and delicious food — from breakfast sandwiches and pastries to bagels and superfood cereal bowls. The firehouse, active until 1952, still showcases its original brick walls, vintage photos, and firefighting artifacts. A highlight is the original shoeshine bench from the Jefferson Hotel — reportedly used by Elvis Presley, Charlie Chaplin, Frank Sinatra, and Presidents Roosevelt and Truman — still in use for shoe shines Friday through Sunday. Bonus: The historic Adam Craig House is right across the street. Tip: If you’re new to Richmond, use GPS to 1805 East Grace Street — it’s tricky to find on your own!

Love this coffee establishment! It’s an old fire station converted into a coffee shop!

Coffee is amazing, food is delicious & dessert was perfection! Every staff in this establishment deserves a raise. They’re not only super patient but they treat you like family and that’s a huge difference.

If you see a table available; grab it right away because the place might look empty but it can get packed very quickly!

My order:

• Iced Latte with Almond Milk- great coffee!
• Croissant Breakfast can be shared by two people because it is huge! Croissant was perfectly flaky but greasy.
• Tiramisu dessert was delicious but to break it was such a mess. The coffee they use if the same they use for the iced latte.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

First time visiting and had one of their seasonal coffees, a cornbread latte. I don’t typically stray from just a black coffee but this sounded interesting enough to try. It was really good and not too bready. The atmosphere is very 1920s Richmond and the pastries were awesome.

After a long journey from New York to Virginia, I couldn’t have asked for a better place to start my morning than Ironclad Coffee Roasters & Baking Co. The interior is stunning—thoughtfully curated with a warm, welcoming vibe that instantly makes you feel at ease. Every detail, from the lighting to the layout, strikes the perfect balance between cozy and sophisticated.

As a photographer (@justinmateonyc), it’s always a joy to walk into a space that feels so visually intentional. The design and atmosphere are incredibly inspiring—definitely a place that makes you want to linger, camera or coffee in hand.

I ordered a hot Americano and a chocolate scone, and both were spot-on. The coffee was smooth and rich, exactly what I needed to shake off the road trip fatigue. The scone was perfectly baked—just the right amount of indulgence to go with my drink.

What really stood out, though, was the service. Friendly, attentive, and genuinely kind—just the kind of hospitality that makes you want to return. Between the ambiance, the quality of the food and drink, and the exceptional service, this place absolutely hit the mark.

Highly recommend stopping by if you’re in the area—or even making a little detour to experience it.

Incredible coffee house in an old fire house, with tons of charm, delicious and unique coffee creations and friendly service. Great seating choices both in and outdoors. Went here multiple days in a row on a visit to Richmond!

Wow!!!! Barista works magic here. Wonderful place and great coffee and pastries. Try the apple cider donut. They need to label that with a bomb symbol. It’s scrumptious. Will be back.

This is a really beautiful cafe that has a pretty wide selection of pastries and drinks. I appreciated they had a pretty extensive tea menu.

We tried the cappuccino, a tea, the bacon egg and cheddar biscuit, and the cinnamon roll.

My wife found the cappuccino to be too sour for her taste but that may just be a preference for different beans, although the artwork was great.
The bacon egg and cheddar biscuit was delicious and very hefty!
The cinnamon roll was very soft and the frosting flavor was great, however there was too much frosting as well as a citrus syrup (marmalade?) on the bottom that made the cinnamon roll a bit too soggy and was a bit overwhelming.

Don’t waste your money on the hard $9 breakfast biscuits, as they’re obviously old and sit under a heat lamp. The service and experience there today was very poor, left very dissatisfied with a bad drink and old food. Mariah’s service is unmatched as are her coffees, she saves this review from being a 1 star.
