I really enjoyed my Hot Mama roll at Toro. The service was helpful making sure we got our drinks and food at a reasonable time. Our crab puffs got here with our food entrees but it was very delicious. These crab puffs were warm and seasoned so well. The Hot Mama roll has a tempura fried crunch that was scrumptious. My husband liked my roll more than his crazy roll lol I usually like his food so it was nice to be on the other side lol I also order mixed veggies on the side and loved it. I loved the atmosphere here. It doesn’t feel too crowded so this is a nice spot.

I was looking forward to this place but was seriously underwhelmed. There was a very strong unpleasant odor inside the restaurant.
Went for lunch but I won’t be going back. I gave it 2 stars because the Hibachi show was nice although I have never seen food slathered in so much butter

After recently dining at Close Japan Restaurant, I was curious to see how Toro Japanese Grill would compare — and the difference was remarkable.

From the very first bite, the quality stood out. The chicken was noticeably better flavored — tender, juicy, and perfectly seasoned. The sauces were absolutely amazing, adding depth and balance without overpowering the dish. Every element felt thoughtfully prepared.

The sushi was truly astonishing, especially when compared to similar restaurants in the area. The freshness, presentation, and flavor combination were on another level. You can immediately tell that care goes into each roll.

One of the biggest surprises was the fried rice — 100% better than comparable places. It had excellent texture, rich flavor, and was clearly made fresh.

On top of the quality, the price is very reasonable, especially considering the overall experience and how it compares to similar restaurants.

After having traveled to Japan, I feel confident recommending Toro Japanese Grill. It delivers authentic flavor, great value, and an experience that truly stands out.

Highly recommended!

The food is very good and the portions are fitting for most entrees. My only qualm was my Shrimp Tempura Bento Box only had 2 little shrimp and lots of fried vegetables. Hardly worth $25. Otherwise this place is very nice, clean, and welcoming.

Jake, our server, was great! We were there for a birthday dinner and we can be a bit much (we drink alot) and he handled all of our orders with ease. Food as always is great as is the restaurant atmosphere.

This place is ok. It’s cozy but seems “cold”. Not a good place for a date but if you just want something different it could be an ok place. Not the best experience. My food was not hot. Steak was extremely undercooked and when I asked them to fix it it seemed like they just put it in the microwave which made it extremely tough to eat and it was just supposed to be medium. Appetizers were actually much better than the entrees. I can’t say I’d return or recommend this place

Magnificent food, spectacular service, nice warm atmosphere, friendly staff. Went with friends; one got seafood platter, the other got teriyaki chicken, and shrimp teriyaki for myself. 2nd time ever having sake, and to me its still good. Also had some plum wine, which was fantastic- not much of a wine drinker, but it was very pleasant.

Nut allergy friendly, don’t think anything uses nuts.

Came in at lunch on a Friday afternoon and it wasn’t that busy. Plenty of parking.

Order-to-Lunch Box: 20 Minutes, Salad came out in about 8 minutes.

They have a solid lunch menu and an even better happy hour menu. The rolls here are quite large – two were suitably filling for someone who came with me. I was pretty full after finishing the Tonkatsu box. The food was alright – rice and vegetables were a little oily, and the Tonkatsu was a bit small in pork but appropriately crispy. The salad had way too much dressing.

Service was nice, checked up on us and gave water refills often.

I like that they split the hibachi side so that not everyone has to leave smelling like smoke, but you still get a bit of it.

Food: 3/5
Service: 4/5
Atmosphere: 3/5

Overall, I’d come back for the lunch or happy hour special value.

Toro is hands-down one of the best sushi and hibachi spots I’ve ever been to. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with warm smiles and a lively, welcoming atmosphere. The chefs are true artists — every dish is beautifully presented and bursting with fresh flavor.
The sushi is incredibly fresh, perfectly balanced, and crafted with care. The hibachi experience is just as impressive — entertaining, delicious, and full of personality. You can tell they use top-quality ingredients, and the portions are generous without compromising on presentation.
Service is fast, friendly, and attentive without ever feeling rushed. Whether you’re out for a date night, a family dinner, or a celebration with friends, Toro nails it every time.
If you love sushi or hibachi, you have to try Toro — it’s the perfect blend of flavor, fun, and hospitality. Easily a five-star experience from start to finish!

I frequently go to Japan with my family, so my sushi standards are very high. Most places coming back home taste very bland and unenjoyable. I find myself eating here quite often as the sushi quality and presentation is very good. This is the only place where I can eat sushi in Houston and enjoy myself. The staff and especially the owners are very kind and respectful. I never have any issues eating here, as they all go above and beyond to ensure a great customer experience. The hibachi side is very fun and the food tastes amazing. I eat here with my family every week and we definitely recommend eating here
