We had our Valentine’s dinner here this year and it was perfect. Great wine and a reasonable price, professional service, and delicious food!
First off, our waitress service and refreshing our water service was great. When it came to busing our table, we had to protect our plates from being taken away too soon.
We decided to spring for one of the specials; the 58 day aged ribeye steak with shishito peppers for $110. When the steak arrived it was disappointing for the price. They could have included the mushrooms with the plate, which was an additional cost. The flavor and cook on the steak was good, but about a quarter of the slices were inedible unrendered fat and cartilage. I know you come here for the ambience, instead of cooking at home. I have cooked my own tomahawk steaks on the BBQ grill, essentially more meat for a third of the cost. We ordered a starter, the summer vegetables with sheep’s milk feta. It was nice and fresh at $23, a little pricy for a veggie dish.
Overall, for the two dishes and three cocktails, we spent $220 including 20% tip.
Experiencing this food almost makes us want to drive to the Buckhorn Steakhouse in Winters, CA where you can get at a 30 to 60 day aged 48oz Tomahawk angus ribeye for two along with all the sides for $130. Thanks Higgins for staying open…
For instance we started with the seasonal farmers market sourced summer vegetables, some raw and some blanched, with feta and edible mint flowers on the top. Pretty plated! Pretty delish!
Black eye pea soup was a seasonal delight too! Then, we love the grass fed, Carman Ranch, burger with side of fermented veggies.
This is our #1 favorite place to eat! And we have a load of #2’s!
Higgins always exceeds my expectations! And exceeds my expect-taste-ins! Seasonal! Local! Organic! House made sauces, fermented veggies and cured meats! Smiling menu-talking servers! Creative Chef and “bitchin” kitchen team! Bar or dining room is a place to meet-up with fellow foodies for a convivial and tasty experience!
I did not get the busser’s name, but we always had full water glasses, and dishes were removed when done and not a moment before.
The food was prepared well, and the portions were hearty. Dessert was a dream. I requested a B52 coffee, which outside of Seattle I have found bartenders balk at making. I specified the ingredients to Dan, and whatever he told the bartender, it was one of the best coffee drinks I have had. Thanks to all.
For my main, I had the braised local beef belly and Baja prawns over potato purée, with broccoli and turnip greens—hearty, balanced, and full of rich Pacific Northwest character. I paired it with two great Oregon beers (a stout and an IPA from Bend Brewing).
Service was excellent—my server Jill was warm, intuitive, and knew the menu inside and out. You could feel the legacy of the place in the pacing, the presentation, and the restraint. It’s not flashy. It’s just honest, rooted, and deeply good.
This is the kind of place that reminds you how food can nourish more than just your body. A Portland institution for a reason.
We had an excellent dinner at Higgins in Portland. The setting is simple yet elegant, and the service was top-notch. Our server, Seth, was fantastic—professional, knowledgeable, and friendly.
We ordered the specials: Chinook salmon with polenta and a brown butter sherry vinaigrette (incredible!) and a razor clam dish that was just as memorable. The fish was cooked perfectly, and the vinaigrette was absolutely delicious. Everything was clean, fresh, and thoughtfully prepared.
Highly recommend for anyone looking for a refined yet welcoming farm-to-table experience in Portland.
