If you’re in the mood for authentic dimsum in the downtown DC area, this is the place to go. But they have all sorts of a Chinese dishes beyond the dimsum like roast duck which was pretty delectable also. The only letdown was the siumai which is surprising since the rest of the dimsum that we got were so tasty as compared to this one which seems to be just ground up pork in dumpling wrapper lacking in umami juiciness.

We also ate here Chinese New Year eve. We ordered the twin lobster (overpriced at $100 but it’s CNY) and Peking Duck (pricey also at $60).

I was craving for dim sum. This restaurant was closed to the hotel I stayed. It took me less than 10 minutes to drive there, but it took me 10 minutes to find a paid parking spot on the street. The restaurant was clean and the staff were friendly. There were quite a few choices for their dim sum menu. They also sell chinese roast duck. I selected the dim sum dishes from the menu. The food was tasteful and delicious.

We had high expectations but were a bit disappointed. The beef chow fun was really tasty and definitely the best dish. However, came looking forward to the roast duck and it was served cold and was quite fatty. The salt and pepper squid was also really lacking in seasoning.

We had a wonderful dim sum experience on a Saturday morning. The shrimp dumplings, shrimp and chive dumplings, and fried taro dumplings were all excellent—beautifully wrapped with dense, flavorful fillings. The Chinese broccoli was perfectly crisp, and I appreciated that nothing was overly salty since you can season to taste with your own soy sauce. Service was also great, attentive but not intrusive. The pan-fried chive dumpling was decent, though not quite as impressive as we preferred the flat pancake style. Overall a great experience would definitely return!

I wanted to start this review and say I am a native New Yorker born and raised. Every year I travel to DC to visit family and the ONE and ONLY place we look forward to eating at the entire trip is this restaurant here. The atmosphere is unparalleled. I love the fact that the restaurant is big yet cozy. The big windows facing the main road draws in such amazing natural light that just makes your day so much more special. You can tell right off the bat that the standard and hospitality at this restaurant is top notch. Whatever you need the staff will attend to you with pleasure. Yes this place can get very very busy and you may be so so eager to try the food that time feels like its slowing down and get impatient, but remember that the kitchen staff is doing their best to make quality food as fast as they can. It is mandatory you come to this restaurant if you are within or outside of this area! Perfect for family gatherings and family owned. Come support this restaurant there is so few gems within this area and don’t forget to show generosity not only to the ladies and gents in the front of the house but to thank the folks in the kitchen as well who are working tirelessly in all weather and temp conditions.

Everything was phenomenal from start to finish. The spring rolls were perfectly crisp, the roasted duck was incredibly flavorful, and the fried rice was cooked just right. The shrimp dumplings were fresh and delicious, and the service was quick, attentive, and excellent. Definitely a place worth returning to!!!

Just In for dim sum that day ..which they have all day (that’s great). You select on the menu vs carts…they were out of my shrimp rice crepe so I tried the pork . It was delicious as well. Kiddo got the shrimp dumplings and wonton soup which he enjoyed. Overall was very good..we would come back if ever in DC area again.

The male manager told us that all of their beef stew with rice is supposed to be fatty, as shown in the photo, which gave me the impression that they do not use good-quality beef. When we asked for an additional table, the female manager responded, “You should be better prepared next time.” I found that comment rude and inappropriate, and I told her so directly.

The food itself was acceptable but significantly overpriced. More concerning was the staff’s overall attitude, which felt dismissive and demeaning—particularly toward Asian customers who speak Mandarin Chinese. Based on this experience, I will not be returning.

Service:
We stumbled on Da Hong Pao while exploring the area around lunchtime. The restaurant wasn’t too crowded, and we were seated right away. While the staff didn’t explain the menu in detail, it was straightforward enough to navigate, especially the dim sum section. Our food was brought out in a timely manner, and the overall service was smooth and efficient.

Taste:
We opted for a few items from the dim sum menu: the roast duck, pork dumplings, shu mai, and spring rolls. Each dish was flavorful, well-prepared, and tasted authentic. The dumplings were especially juicy and satisfying, and the duck had great texture and seasoning. Everything complemented each other well, and it was the perfect amount for two people looking for a light but tasty lunch.

Ambiance:
The space is casual yet inviting, with a traditional feel that’s great for both small and large groups. It’s clean and comfortable, with a steady flow of guests but never felt too loud or crowded during our visit.

Overall Review:
Da Hong Pao is a great spot for quality dim sum at fair prices. Whether you’re just stopping in for a few bites or coming with a bigger group, the menu has something for everyone. We’ll definitely be back to try more dishes next time!

Solid dim sum and very consistent. We typically get it delivered on weekends and everything is always hot and fresh when it gets here. We’ve tried other places but keep reverting back here due to the consistency.
