Our first visit to Modes Bum Steer was very dissopointing. Kudos to the old school dinner bar feel and the nostalgic decor however there is little else our party of four could praise other than the homemade blue cheese dressing. The tables are to small making the seating a bit awkward and the service was subpar. The wedge salad was lettuce, 3 cherry tomatoes and dressing. NY strip and fillet steaks were ordered at the table and both tasted full of tenderisor while lacking juiceness, flavor, and seasoning. Sadly, we left feeling puzzled at the 4.3 rating and that maybe they are living on their laurels.
Agreeing that we just had an overpriced Poderosa steak house flashback, Bum Steer is a good discription of this steak house.

We stopped in do to the unique look of the outside. And once we walked in it is a nice little spot with a kind of unique style of its own. The hostess was very nice. The waitress was kind of non wanting to interact much. We started off with some drinks and appetizer. We went with jalapeño cheese sticks. They were really good. I ordered a bullet rye with sprite and wife went with a Stella and it came with a Stella glass with gold rim. She insists it makes it taste better. I ended up with a Old Fashioned by mistake but was really good. Lol. Wife went with duck with rice. She liked it but wants people to know it is a bone in duck. I went with the surf and turf with lobster and filet mignon baked potato and salad. Oh man was it good. Cooked perfect.

Solid service, solid quality, but way overpriced. I had a 12 oz prime rib which would have been $45 but I did the dinner special with shrimp so it was $65, for $20 I received 6 shrimp.

The prime rib was cooked properly, it was rare, just like I asked, but it had very little seasoning.

So the food was okay, the service was excellent and the atmosphere was not that great – the place looked very run down, dilapidated. Old carpet, dingy corners and poor lighting.

PUT THIS ON YOUR LIST

Incredible cigar-bar feel old fashioned steakhouse. The chairs are all office chairs are wheels and the waitresses are all veterans. We get the escargot, potato skins, T-bone steak and a filet. If you value quality steaks this is a must. Menu is limited but they’ve perfected everything on it. If you’re lucky enough to come while they’re serving potato skins, get them. Lastly, take the time to befriend the waitresses.

Not a very long wait at all, no reservations.

What a treat!! We asked our hotel where to go for dinner and they immediately suggested we go to Mode’s. The hostess sat us right away and everyone was very courteous and welcoming. We started off with the Shrimp Cocktail and my wife followed that up with Mode’s Favorite, the 1/2 Rack of Ribs and a 6oz NY Strip. Wow, delicious!! The ribs pulled effortlessly from the meat which was amazing, the Strip was cooked to perfection. I had the French Dip and was blown away because it was so good, make sure to add the mushrooms, onions and cheese! Our server, Amber, was on point and our glasses were never empty. We will be back!

Modes Bum Steer in Traverse City is like stepping into the ultimate steak lover’s paradise – if you don’t mind a touch of quirky charm and a bit of “up north” nostalgia. Picture this: you’re greeted by a vibe that says, “Come as you are, but prepare to leave well-fed and a little more content with life.”

The steaks here? Absolutely on point. They’re the kind of juicy, flavorful cuts that make you feel like you’re doing something a bit indulgent – in the best way possible. Whether you like it rare or well done (but hey, don’t ruin it!), the chefs here know how to get that perfect sear.

And then there’s the atmosphere. Modes has a mix of rustic charm and cozy diner vibes, almost like that cool uncle’s cabin where the décor is retro but somehow still cool. The locals fill the place with friendly chatter, so don’t be surprised if you leave with a few new Traverse City stories – or maybe even a few new friends.

Service-wise, they’re the kind of staff who make sure you’re topped off and don’t rush you out the door, leaving you to soak in the experience as long as you need. And don’t forget to try the onion rings. They’re crispy enough to convince you that the humble onion was always destined for deep-fried greatness.

In short? Modes Bum Steer is a Traverse City classic for a reason. It’s a little slice of Americana, a lot of good food, and definitely worth the trip.

Always a wonderful meal at Mode’s. It was Men’s Night downtown and the place was busy. We were seated after a short wait. Our server was fantastic and attentive. We split the duck, which was fabulous! The cherry cheesecake for dessert was also exceptional. A wonderful place for adult company!

Modes is quintessential nostalgic Traverse City! Kathy was great and had our table ready for us, Olivia was our server and she handled our 9 top with skill and charm. Our party all had a great time.

We were recommended this place and it did not disappoint. Wedge salads, chunky blue cheese, chicken wings and steak… what more could I ask for. I ordered the prime rib and an order of chicken wings. Wife had the filet and lobster. Overall, it was a fantastic yet simple meal. Something about a wedge salad and chunky blue cheese makes for the start to a perfect meal. Steaks were perfect as well. Since I try chicken wings everywhere I go, I would have to say these were breaded nicely but overall a 3.5 out of 5. The rest of the meal easily made up for them. We will return next time we are visiting.
