Laynes is my go to chicken place here in College Station. Ordering was simple, friendly service, and got my meal quickly after ordering. I’ve never been disappointed with the chicken. It was warm, tender, and crispy. The fries they have are one of my favorite in the area. The Texas toast came out great. Reminds me of some of the comfort food I’ve had. I initially only had the chicken dry, but I gave the sauce a try and I absolutely fell in love with it over the years. Glad to always support Laynes and the food they provide. Highly recommend getting to eat at Laynes for their unique, indoor dining experience, good comfort food, and as an Aggie staple in College Station.

STRIKE TWO! I really, really want to love this place, but this is the second time I’ve visited in the last 6 weeks and each time I was a disappointment. The first visit (9/25/25) I got two four finger meals and added 4 extra sauces (+$2.36). All the sauce containers were filled a little over 1/4 full, I was shocked after having paid extra. I took a photo and I thought I left a review tho I don’t see it. Maybe I submitted it through the website . Fast forward to today (11/5/25), I decided I would give y’all a second chance. I ordered a 3 finger meal this time with 2 extra sauces (Tho tempted, I didn’t say anything about my previous sauce disappointment). I was handed the container but was not offered any napkins. I had to ask for some. Then I checked my container to find I had only been given 1 add’l sauce instead of the 2 I paid for. So I had to wait and wave (drive thru) to ask for my add’l sauce. The girl working the drive thru was very nice, apologizing for the mistake. On to the food… I was relieved to discover the sauces were properly filled to the top this time, but the chicken strips were ridiculously small. I gobbled one down before taking the photo. When was the last time you could fit a whole chicken finger in your mouth, one bite?!? These might be more appropriately called nuggets. So, strike two! I just spent almost 12 bucks and I now have to go find another place to eat… 3 chicken nuggets ain’t gonna do it! I’m just sad because I really love the flavor of the chicken and the sauce is outstanding. But after the last two experiences, I don’t know if I would go back. I mean, I know I’ll WANT TO but I just don’t know if I can take anymore disappointment from a place I so badly want to love.

I’ve always chosen Layne’s over Canes and I am extremely disappointed. They get never done me like this. Mind you, I have not eaten one single fry out of this box and you can tell these are old fries.

Shame on y’all.

I’ve wanted to try Layne’s for a while now and I was finally able to. This wins over Cane’s 100%. The spicy chicken fingers are on point. I didn’t know until I got there that it was the original location. The charm of the place is really cool, and it’s a homely feel. It doesn’t feel corporate at all. I loved all my meal, the chicken, the fries and the sauce. I hope you all build more Layne’s in Houston, my area doesn’t have one.

Flavorful chicken tenders with hot toast. The tenders are little smaller than Cane’s but I enjoyed the texture and the crispiness. The sauce is pretty good.

Will love to revisit snd recommend highly.

Been loving Layne’s since the early days — and it’s just as good now as it was back then. The chicken fingers are always hot, crispy, and flavorful, and the sauce is unbeatable. Truly “soon to be famous” since 1994!

I love that we’re getting new locations but the OG is not being treated right! Strips were very small, we got an extra one to make up for it but it seemed like they were cooked too long for their size. They were all dry and the meat of the chicken was exposed to the oil (pictured) making them even drier. Definitely not the Laynes I remember.

It’s cool that this is the very first Layne’s. It’s cool that it was founded in 1994 (my class). I especially appreciate that two people can eat here – including drinks – for about $20. That’s outstanding! I also enjoyed the “Cane’s vs. Layne’s” artwork behind the counter. So that’s all good. The “nothin’ fancy here” decor is fine with me. I gotta be honest though, I didn’t think the actual chicken fingers were anything special, and I really would have liked some ranch sauce for both the fries and the chicken. I can’t quite figure why Layne’s and their (copycat?) competitor only offer ONE sauce and it’s “take it or leave it”. Oh, and I don’t like being asked to tip prior to having received any service, though it has become super common since ’94.

Still there, a niece piece of nostalgia when I was there 10 years ago. Portions seem different from back then.

Chicken fingers were juicy and tender on the inside, and crispy on the outside. The sauce is very flavorful as well. Their fries are better than Cane’s, but I miss their coleslaw and lemonade. It has a very college-y vibe to it, casual ambience. Overall good food with value for money.
