Social Profile:

The roots of this venerable establishment were originally planted by Tennessee native Leroy “Van” Vandegrift, who moved with family to Oklahoma City, where he graduated from Central High. He served in the Army before working as a tool dresser in the oil fields of North Texas and began cooking for fellow roughnecks on rig sites. Around 1928, Van opened his first Pig Stand in a hotel in Wewoka, Oklahoma. It was a small little store serving barbecue such as the Pig Sandwich® and Ribs. The menu also included other types of sandwiches such as Liverwurst, Pimento, Chicken Salad, and Cream Cheese. In 1929 a second Pig Stand opened in Seminole and was then sold in 1935. Pig Stands were later opened in Wichita Falls, Texas and Wichita, Kansas. On…

Van’s Pig Stand: A Delicious First Impression Despite a Few Bumps in the Road!
My first visit to Van’s Pig Stand in Shawnee was, overall, a very enjoyable experience, and I’m already looking forward to my next trip! From the moment we walked in, we were greeted by genuinely friendly and helpful staff who immediately made us feel welcome and pointed us in the right direction. The interior had that classic, comfortable barbecue joint feel that you expect and appreciate.
While our initial attempt at the drive-through didn’t pan out (we waited a short while with no response), this minor inconvenience was quickly overshadowed by the positive experience we had inside. The woman who took our order at the counter was a delight – friendly, smiling, and patient.
There were a couple of small hiccups with our order. I initially requested blue cheese dressing for my salad, which I was told they didn’t have, only to have someone else mention they did. Ultimately, it turned out they didn’t. I then requested ranch, which unfortunately also didn’t make it into our bag. Instead, my BBQ turkey salad came with a small container of what I believe was a balsamic vinaigrette. While the vinaigrette was actually quite good, I was a little disappointed not to receive either of my initial dressing requests.
However, let me tell you, the barbecue itself more than made up for these minor issues! The chopped brisket was absolutely awesome – incredibly flavorful and tender on its own. We couldn’t resist trying their Carolina and Peach Habanero sauces, and both were fantastic! They added a wonderful depth and complexity to the already delicious brisket. The BBQ turkey salad was also excellent, packed with flavor and a generous portion of turkey.
Despite the dressing mix-up, we were still completely satisfied with our meal. The quality and taste of the barbecue were truly outstanding. The friendly service we received inside was also a major highlight.
While a couple of small operational kinks prevented a perfect five-star rating, Van’s Pig Stand delivered on what truly matters: fantastic barbecue and welcoming hospitality. We will definitely be returning when we’re back in the Shawnee area and are eager to try more of their delicious offerings!

Food was very good. Nothing that will blow your socks off. I had the ribs and brisket. Only received 2 ribs on my $22 two meat and 2 side plate. If you dont know what to order, ask for Harry, he will guide you to a darn good meal.

Maybe not on usual game….but ribs were dry and more likejerky. I like BBQ sauce, but not as a mandatory moisturizer for overcooking. The brisket was good but also needed sauce, was soooo dry. I was used to smoked meat so tender it didn’t need anything (Norman location) but a smile but this, while okay, was not the usual Van’s fare. Will try again another day. First time to Shawnee location. Carrot cake was exceptional!

I’ve been to Van’s before but the food was just very bland and poorly done this time. Not recommended, especially for the price. The crew was friendly and the atmosphere was fine. Just wish the BBQ was better.

Would I return? Yes.

I was promptly greeted by all the ladies in the kitchen, not just the cashier – nice touch!

This was my first visit. I had a few questions, and my questions were answered to my satisfaction

I ordered the Pig Sandwich combo (pulled pork) with (homemade ‘n’ pleasantly)greasy curly fries.

My meal was PROMPTLY brought out to the table. The sandwich was of an adequate portion. The pork was nice and moist & tender with good smokey hints & flavor (a bit light, though, for my personal preference – “your mileage may vary.”) The meat itself was luke warm at best – * my reason for docking a ☆ on the review.

The fries were fantastic! They were pleasantly soft on the inside with a nice crisp on the exterior.

The BBQ sauce variety was a nice restaurant option, admittedly!

The establishment was clean all around: floors, tables, restroom.

I was having a really bad day and Mike the new Assistant Manager turned my entire day around. He really saw me as a person and listened to me complain without getting upset! My stress gone, work commenced. Thank you for your humanity!

Came and got 2 loaded baked potatoes. One pork, one chopped beef. Potato half done, chopped beef so dry and hard they put all the condiments in container with the warm potato melted the tiny cup of cheese (clumped now), asked for green onions, got chopped onions that looked like last weeks. So this $37.oo for 2 baked potatoes was terrible. This has happened twice now. Put your condiments separately from the food. Rehydrate your chopped meats. Worst BBQ

Normally good barbeque sandwiches. $7.25 for brisket sandwich. About $4 more if you add fries and a drink. Today (May 22) the meat tasted like it had been in a cooler and then reheated. Very dry also, I assume from the cooler. I have been going to Van’s for about 58 years and this is the first bad sandwich I have received. 50 cent charge for water, which is fair.
