Today, we had our very first “Cook Out” experience, and we’re glad we finally gave it a try. Wanting to support something local, we headed to the Kesterville Road location in Winston-Salem after hearing so many North Carolinians call it a must-visit institution. It absolutely lived up to the hype.

The Food:
Let me start by saying — in over 50+ years of eating fast food, this was some of the hottest, freshest food I’ve ever received at a drive-thru. We ordered three Tray Meals and were impressed by both the quality and quantity.
• Spicy Chicken Sandwich Tray: I got this with onion rings and fried okra. The sandwich was a thin, breaded cutlet — crispy, juicy, and well-seasoned, though not overly spicy. The bun was soft and fresh, and the lettuce, tomato, and mayo rounded it out nicely. The onion rings were great, and the fried okra stole the show — perfectly cooked! My son noted that most fast food okra is undercooked and slimy inside, but Cook Out nails it.
• BBQ Grilled Chicken Sandwich Tray: My son’s pick — and honestly, the best of the bunch. The smoky BBQ flavor came through in every bite of the grilled chicken. His sides were onion rings and white cheddar cheese bites, which were hot, crunchy, and packed with cheesy goodness.
• Double Burger Tray: We also tried the classic double burger with fries and a BBQ chicken quesadilla. The burger tasted like it came off a backyard grill — juicy, flavorful, and nostalgic. The quesadilla was a surprise hit: hot, stuffed with chicken and BBQ sauce, and very satisfying.

The Price:
For three full Tray Meals with drinks, we paid just $29 — and left completely stuffed. That kind of value is hard to beat.

Service & Atmosphere:
This location is drive-thru only, with dual lanes for faster service. The staff were friendly, fast, and cheerful — a big plus that added to the positive experience.

Final Thoughts:
We didn’t get to try one of Cook Out’s famous shakes this time, but the options looked endless and tempting — and we noticed several people in the parking lot enjoying them.

Overall, if you’re visiting or live in North Carolina and haven’t been to Cook Out, make it a priority. It’s fast food done right — hot, flavorful, affordable, and served with a smile.

I never had a cook out burger and I was not disappointing. I tried the steak style burger and the onion ring and they were delicious. I had to do a second visit to try other burger style burger and it was just as good. price is also right for my budget. it’s a takeout orders only.

Some locations like this are deive thru only. So just be aware of that. Food is great – burgers, hotdogs are must try, with that fried okra and hush puppies on the side. Try their milkshakes too, they are good. Service is very fast and portions are reasonable for the price.

Honestly surprised how good it was considering how badly almost every other restaurant around has been. The person who took my order understood everything clearly first go, the lettuce wasn’t flaccid and depressing looking, it wasn’t overly greasy (only a bit, it is cook out after all), the bacon was crispy and not undercooked. All around probably the best experience I’ve had in a while.

If I could give no stars I would…. I waited in line for 15 mins to receive 3 pieces of grilled chicken.. I paid 15 dollars for the chicken and thought the sizes would be a little better than that. I asked to speak with the manager and politely expressed my amazement at the size of the chicken. (Look at the size of the chicken compared to the rest of the pieces)The manager said “I can’t control the size of the chicken. Do you want another piece “. No apology or anything. He can back with the second piece. Once again he didn’t utter a word, just handed me the chicken and closed the door

I understand that working customer service is difficult and frankly hard at times, but to not even be concerned about what the customer is saying is bad. Do better…….

This location recently opened.
The food is really good, if you keep it simple.
Cheeseburgers were great.
French fries were good.
Onion rings were delicious.
Hush Puppies were my wife’s favorite.
Cheese bites were good.
Service was on par, and the staff was friendly.
Look forward to eating here again.

I used to LOVE going to cookout but this last visit tonight may be my last, at least for a burger. I can’t believe how skimpy the burgers have become. I always order a Jr. Tray because I have a small appetite, but my husband orders a Big Tray every time. We both got burgers, mine was Out West style( a $.99 added cost) and my husband got the Big Double Tray cheddar style( a $.99 added cost). Our burger patties were oval shaped and didn’t even cover the whole bun. Mine came with one patty while my husbands big double came with two. The patties were maybe 1/8 oz patties and that is being generous. What the heck Cookout? I get food cost is going up but I basically got a bun with a tiny amount of meat. For both our meals we paid $17.18. Cookout always had a reputation for serving quality food at a reasonable price. Not anymore. Shame on you for skimping so badly. If food cost is a concern and raising your prices is necessary, please do. I would rather pay a bit more for quality than the bread sandwich I got tonight.

This Cook Out location has gone way downhill. The staff is consistently rude, the service feels rushed, and the food almost always tastes old or like it’s been sitting out forever. It’s honestly disappointing every single time. I’d rather drive all the way to the Cook Out in Clemmons even though it’s farther because at least they get my order right and the food actually tastes fresh. This location really needs to do better.

Horrible drive thru service. Near Hanes mall Blvd. Gal, talks extremely fast, does not repeat easily and seemed aggressive when we clarified items.
Just a bad attitude, no name tag so I can’t reference the young gal with braids, colored on tips and African American approximately in 20s. Lack of friendliness or professional. Receipt says: terminal id 1: check 10032. Ref 21 and batch 4.

Terrible attitude.
