Our server, Cristian was super friendly and the service was quick. I felt a little odd that they asked four dollars for water, but I appreciate our server not charging it.
We ordered a pina colada, cortado coffee, sous vide chicken with rice, and Greek yogurt with fruit & granola. Coffee was good, very good! Pina colada and yogurt were okay. However, the chicken & rice was a little disappointing. It was too salty to our taste.
I had a fantastic experience at Mercado La Carreta today! The service was excellent—the staff were very attentive and welcoming. I tried the Ceviche Stuffed Avocado and the Fried Plantains, and they were delicious. The portion sizes were great and definitely worth the price. Highly recommended if you’re looking for authentic flavors and a great vibe in San Juan!
The Bandeja Jibara was amazing. Be prepared to eat, as it is a full meal and you get what you pay for.
The passion fruit juice and cortado coffee were exceptional.
The windows stand obligingly open, inviting the warm Puerto Rican air to wander inside at its leisure. Ceiling fans turn overhead with a patient diligence, stirring the breeze just enough to temper the heat and lend the room a certain gentle animation. The seating, though limited, is arranged with a quiet charm, offering a most agreeable perch from which to observe the world passing beyond the open frames.
This is, without question, a fine establishment for brunch. Alas, our own visit was regrettably brief, dictated by the tyranny of time rather than any failing of the house. Even so, the essentials revealed themselves swiftly. The coffee possessed a commendable depth of flavour, robust yet civilised, and the Croquetas, those golden orbs of indulgence won the immediate and unreserved admiration of the lady.
Mercado La Carreta is modest, sincere, and quietly accomplished: a place that seems content to reward those who linger, and just as content to leave a favourable impression upon those, like ourselves, who must take their leave all too soon.
The atmosphere is bright and airy, and the food is extremely flavorful. I had the ceviche over avocado, and the citrusy flavor of the grouper was perfectly balanced with the fresh avocado. Carol was supremely hospitable and truly made dining an experience, sharing the unique culture and flavors of Puerto Rico, including the delicious pistachio coquito.
Mercado La Carreta is a must-visit if you find yourself in Old San Juan! Come hungry and ask for Carol!
Now… I am Colombian, so I grew up with real seasoning and real flavor. Because of that, the food here felt a little underwhelming. The prices are high for what you get, and my plate needed something fresher. The sauce helped, but it was such a tiny amount I almost wanted to ask for it like I was at home… “please give me more because this is not doing anything for me.”
The best part of the experience was our server. He had a big personality and made the entire visit worth it. His energy carried the whole place.
One thing about San Juan is that everywhere you go, people in hospitality try to upsell you because you are a tourist. It becomes very noticeable after a few days.
We walked there because finding parking is almost impossible. When we arrived, the entrances were blocked off, so for a moment we were not sure if they were even open. It was already getting busy, and this was early in the day, so I can only imagine what it looks like during lunch or dinner.
Overall, the view and the service were the standout parts. The food needs improvement for what it costs. Still a nice place to start the day if you want a pretty view and good vibes.
