Aappakadai was started with the thought of introducing the taste and flavors of Aappam to Northern California, United States. Aappakadai was started with a small team of experienced chefs who are passionate about South Indian Chettinad Food. The recipes of Aappakadai come from the spice racks of the Grandmother. Traditionally fresh and hot home-made ‘Aappam’ were sold by Aappakadai as a breakfast dish in the streets of Chettinad.
Simple venue known for spicy Chettinad Indian fare, including aappam & idly, plus Indo-Chinese grub.

Good place to catch up some South Indian food. The service is amicable but the food is delayed to a point where you will start feeling frustrated.
The food taste is good but not the best South Indian I tasted. The price is also a bit expensive for the food quantity. I ordered appam and mutton along with weekend spl crab masala. The mutton was good and the appam was also fresh. The crab masala was good but I have tasted better crab masala in other locations. The ambience is pretty average, could have been better. Overall it’s an avg experience and I expect it to be a bit better compared to other locations.

We’ve been to this place three times. The most recent visit was on the day of their grand opening at the new location. For the sake of fairness I’ve included the review of my previous two visits below the most recent one.
They definitely seemed overwhelmed during their grand reopening day. The food was no where near to the quality we’d gotten used to and the main reason we visited them again. We ordered the same entrees as we had on the previous couple of occasions. The bone soup was served cold and we’d to request them to re-heat it. The mutton curry was not seasoned well and the parathas were thickly layered.
Our server was polite and accepted that they were not at their best and gave us a 50% discount on our dinner bill. We ended up not having a good dine in experience at their new location.

We’ve been here a couple times so far. We’ve had:
Appum with mutton keema: Exceptional
Ghee roast masala dosa: Great flavour. Crisp. Cooked with generous ghee
Paper roast with masala: Great flavor again. Crisp.
The masala(potato) was had the right amount of spices and was mashed to perfection (not too much. not too little)
Masala chai: Indded had the masala.
Mutton bone broth: Soul food. If you miss your mutton soup at home this is the one to go for. We ended up ordering more of this. The chef was generous enough to give additional meat pieces for our second helping.
Iddiappam with mutton: This was our first time having this entree. It did not disappoint but left us craving for more next time.
Chicken lollipop: Well cooked tasted as expected.
Paratha: Extremely tasty. Took us back to India in a bite.
Mutton Kotu curry: Delicious. Must try.
Goat curry: (goes with the paratha)
All meat entrees were cooked to perfection and had individually distinguishable flavors and taste.
They have are currently moving to a new location as I write this review but we’re confident that the taste will move too. This is the only place that is open between lunch and dinner hours.
Ambience: Will update once I visit their new location
Quantity: Generous
Price point: Costlier as compared to other places but worth every dime.

Appa kadai.. went for lunch looking for veg options.. not many on the menu really. But the staff was sweet enough to help some custom vegetarian dishes which tasted really good. Over all the food was good nothing to complain . However. 2 things stood out:
1. The service is super slow.
2. The staff doesn’t wear gloves when cleaning tables and doesn’t wash hands after cleaning the tables with bare hands.

We are going to this new location after it moved from its previous one. We always enjoy their extensive non-vegetarian tiffin options on their huge menu. We started with the Cauliflower Manchurian and Masala Kalaki. The Cauliflower Manchurian was tasty, although not saucy like other restaurants. The Masala Kalaki had all the flavors but needed more salt. The Aapam was decent, but it stuck to the plate once it cooled down also, Vegetable Koorma that came with it was average. The Kal Dosa was good, but the chicken curry was just okay. The Masala Dosa and Podi Masala Dosa were tasty. However, the aloo masala could have been better. Overall, our experience with the dishes we ordered was average during our visit.

South Indian dishes are plenty here. All sorts of rotis and appams with different types of curries. Try their crab masala especially during dungeness season, or mutton paya when they have it on the menu. The recent change in location has given them a bigger and more modern space to support the customer base. I come here when I think about Chettinadu cuisine.

First of all, don’t try the plain biryani there because it is no where close to biryani. It tasted likes lemon rice. The baby corn Manchurian was good. My friends ordered butter chicken and they did like it a lot. The naan was Pretty good though and I wish they had a good curry to back it up. Overall very neutral experience.

We are from the Midwest and being a South Indian Tamil , I felt like I was a kid in Disneyland seeing all the South Indian options in California that we never get to see. We got the special aapam with minced chicken…the dish have 2 aapams so easily shareable if you want to try. The tawa fish weekend special was a hit for us including the kids. Kids loved cone dosa and idly sambar. We all thought the sambar was specially good here. My 3yo liked all the 3 chutneys that came with the tiffin items. We also got the parotta with mutton but that wasn’t has good as the rest. Service was friendly and accommodating with the kids. It was one of the Indian restaurants that didn’t close midday which brought us in.

Have been a regular customer here & it has always been a positive experience. The Ambur mutton biriyani here is one of the best! The service is good. It’s a small place, but the food here is awesome. Definitely going there again, and again. Five stars for the food.

Tried the Sunday breakfast buffet and it was delicious. The highlight was the live dosa station, we tried the ghee roast dosa, pesarattu, gongura, cheese and the karam dosa all of them are very fresh and tasty. The Poori and Chole curry combination was also very good. Both the peanut and coconut chutneys were excellent. The filter coffee is included in the buffet and was outstanding and perhaps the best item on the menu.
