We started with chips and guacamole, and they were unforgettable. The guac had that perfect balance of creamy texture and bright acidity, the kind of freshness that makes you go back for “just one more” scoop again and again. The pico and Serrano served with it added a punchy, addictive bite that made the whole plate impossible to stop eating. The chips themselves were crisp, warm, and fresh — easily some of the best chips and guac we’ve ever had.
For drinks, the margaritas were vibrant and well-balanced, and the Jamaica tequila was smooth, floral, and fun to sip. When it came to food, every taco delivered. The chicken tacos stood out with juicy meat topped in a rich, silky crema that brought everything together. The carnitas were incredible — juicy and deeply flavorful, with just the right amount of crispness on the edges and a freshness that made every bite rich without being heavy. The carne asada was tender and bold, full of that classic grilled flavor. The ceviche tasted bright and exceptionally fresh.
Beautiful drinks, cozy atmosphere, truly delicious food, and thoughtful service. Cantina Mayahuel gets everything right, and we’ll absolutely be back.
Our group of 6 left a pop up show to grab a bite here. We showed up at 9:20, but they are open to 10 and we even asked if the kitchen was cool with it. We ordered right away though since they said they do last call at 930.
All of us ordered right away. When the server delivered the food only 2 out of 6 meals came out and she acted like that was it. When we re ordered they kind of made a stink, and then forgot 2 meals again!! And refused to finish the order.
Not really apologetic, eventually comped 1 meal, and was just unacceptable service. Food that came was good though.
Weirdest thing, the manager Jorge at the end was very defensive about the situation. We were patient with the first mess up, doing it twice and not caring is annoying. The manager said a few times “the food you did get was good though.” Unhinged response.
Probably won’t be back, which is a shame as the food was good, because of the management and service.
We chose to eat outside, which feels like a tent in a parking lot. Next time I will eat inside, it’s much nicer.
Atmosphere and Charm: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The restaurant exudes a cozy, rustic vibe, complete with colorful tiles and wooden accents. It’s the kind of place where you can kick back, enjoy a drink, and soak in the Mexican spirit.
Bar Delights:
The bar at Cantina Mayahuel is a highlight. With an impressive selection of tequilas and a variety of beers, it’s a great spot for unwinding after a long day. Whether you’re sipping a margarita or opting for a cold cerveza, the bar won’t disappoint.
The Food:
Ceviche: Not bad at all! The tangy, citrus-marinated seafood is refreshing, especially on a warm San Diego day. The balance of flavors is commendable.
Beef Tacos: Unfortunately, these didn’t hit the mark. The beef was lackluster, and the overall flavor fell short. San Diego sets high standards for Mexican cuisine, and Cantina Mayahuel didn’t quite meet them.
Final Verdict:
While Cantina Mayahuel has its moments of charm and decent offerings, it falls short in terms of food quality. If you’re seeking an authentic Mexican culinary experience, you might want to explore other options in San Diego.
Remember, taste is subjective, and what one person finds mediocre, another might adore. So, if you’re in the mood for a laid-back evening with good drinks and a dash of Mexican flair, Cantina Mayahuel could still be worth a visit.
I’ve come here numerous times and always come back because I can’t get enough of their yummy food and drinks. They started with a small hole in the wall spot and have expanded to a covered patio bar as well for more room (which means more space to eat, drink, and be merry!)
Now I’m not big on tequila but if you are this is your spot! They have a huge array of different types of tequila and the bartenders are very knowledgeable about them to help you pick the one you’ll like. I almost always order carnitas tacos with rice and beans (can’t get enough of it!) except for when I make it in for the seafood stew. The seafood stew is a MUST try, one of my favorite things I’ve probably ever tasted (and I eat a lot). The seafood is fresh the broth is both refreshing and spicy, so so good! You obviously can’t come here and not have some margaritas to wash down your food! They also have a happy hour! I’ll always continue to come here!
