Two brothers journeyed from Alsace, France, to Soho, New York. They found a little restaurant for sale. The booths were already in place and they kept the chairs until they fell apart or were destroyed in the brawls that marked the early years. They were so poor they threw nothing out, not even the salt. Guy turned his Alsatian cooking skills to fine steaks and fish for low prices. Serge stood outside on Prince Street, a lonely figure importuning passersby to enter and taste. People began to trickle in from their illegal lofts in the neighborhood. Some came back the next night or the next week, and people spread the word. More came, and came back. Soon the locals were complaining about the good reviews. The rest is New York bistro history.
Classic bistro dating to the 1970s with a bustling Parisian atmosphere & a serious French menu.

The interior is cozy, I think the layout makes good use of the space and the artwork is pretty interesting as well. The arrangement of the tables in a straight line create a hallway effect between the front and the kitchen. So whenever wait staff needed to get by you would almost always get bumped or a coat knocked out. My wife’s purse was knocked over twice and neither of the times did they offer to get it from the floor.
The hostess was nice, big smile and charismatic. Same with the coat check. The waitresses, however, different story. They gave the vibe that they would rather be anywhere but at work. Trust me I feel that, but I can’t show that expression at my job and I wouldn’t expect you to show it at yours.
We ordered some coffees and made it clear that we wanted to just enjoy the coffee before ordering the burgers. Mid-conversation on three accounts within the next 10 minutes they just kept coming by and saying “so… are you ready to order now?” On the third time, my wife answered for us and said just a few minutes please. And then I spoke up as well to explain and the moment I started speaking she turned away immediately and quickly walked away.
At any rate, we both ordered the burger. The fries were great, but the burger wasn’t quite good. I could tell the meat was fresh, and as it’s called the “Burger Au Poivre” it’s going to be covered in pepper. The pepper was a tad overbearing. But the main downside was the bun. It was not fresh at all, it was stale and I even had a hard time cutting through the bun with a knife.
When we finally finished eating we just felt unwell. The pepper doesn’t settle well. Mixed with a buttery, salt infused sauce on the side, the burger was just not enjoyable. Left a 20% tip because we’ll do that always unless it’s a truly horrible experience, but they certainly did not do anything to deserve it.
We won’t be going back. I encourage those who are going to lower your expectations just a little.
We had another lovely evening. The food was delicious, the staff was attentive and the wine was flowing.
We all had the Steak Au Poivre along with the crispy brussel sprouts and roasted carrots. We ended our meal with the beautiful spun sugar cage and bread pudding for my friend’s birthday.
I’m sure I gained five pounds just on the butter alone but so worth it!
Highly recommend making reservations.
Firstly Raouls is a beautiful restaurant. AC on
The other hand feels like a large diner.
Visually the burger at AC is very attractive. Raoul’s is a classic burger- very well made with the peppercorn crust and the Au pivore sauce on the side. It comes with a premade salad mix with light mayo like dressing on the burger. The salad mix was not my favorite. Shoestring fries were nice and crispy. Service was attentive.
To improve:
– Would have loved to have more cheese – It’s really good but I really had little in the burger
– it’s super dry if not dipped in the pepper jus
– the pepper jus was good but waaay to creamy – it makes it too heavy
To start, we enjoyed the Oysters du Jour, beautifully presented and perfectly chilled, showcasing the restaurant’s commitment to high-quality seafood. For the mains, I chose the Holstein Organic Chicken Schnitzel, golden and crispy on the outside while tender and juicy within—comforting yet elevated. My companion had the Steak au Poivre, seared to perfection and served with a luscious peppercorn sauce, rich and flavorful.
Our beverage selections enhanced the meal further: a glass of red wine paired seamlessly with the steak, while a classic mimosa added a refreshing, celebratory touch to the brunch setting. For dessert, we indulged in the Sticky Banana Pudding, a decadent, moist, and perfectly balanced sweet treat that felt like the ideal conclusion to the meal.
Dining at Raoul felt like a brief escape to Paris. The combination of thoughtfully executed dishes, elegant presentation, and attentive service created a brunch experience that is both memorable and effortlessly sophisticated. Raoul is a standout destination for those seeking classic French-inspired cuisine with a modern New York energy.
