Great spot in Roanoke. Always busy but I don’t mind that as much. We love Food Truck and Tunes on Friday nights. Little known fact about Sweet Donkey is that they make the best waffles on the planet. I wish their coffee was better (fresh, single origin….which they have sometimes through Counter Culture)…maybe start brewing a local roaster?

This used to be one of my favorite coffee shops, which is why it honestly makes me sad to write this review.

Recently, I visited the café with a friend who had never been there before. I was really excited to show her the place because it has always been special to me. I’ve gone many times and always felt welcomed and comfortable. Sadly, this visit was very different.

I checked the hours and saw they close at 7 PM, so we made sure to go early. We arrived around 5:50 PM, almost 6 PM, because we only planned to have a quick coffee and not stay too late. I also work in customer service, so I completely understand how frustrating it can be when people show up right before closing, which is why we made sure to come with plenty of time.

My friend wanted to order a waffle, which I had highly recommended because I’ve ordered it several times and really like it. The cashier told us they couldn’t make waffles because the machines had already been cleaned. That honestly surprised me. From my experience working in service, items are usually prepared until much closer to closing time. Being told this almost an hour before closing was disappointing, especially since it was something I was excited for my friend to try.

We ended up ordering two drinks and a slice of cake, but everything was served as if it was to-go, even though there were still open tables and time before closing. We stayed until 7 PM, and there were still multiple tables occupied.

The girl who helped us wasn’t rude, but her attitude made us feel rushed. About 10 minutes before closing, she reminded us they close at 7 PM, which we respected. However, when we left right at closing time, other tables were still there and didn’t seem to be rushed out. That made the situation feel uncomfortable and a little unfair.

This place has meant a lot to me over time, which is why this experience was so disappointing. I really hope this was just an off day because I’ve always loved coming here. Unfortunately, after this visit, I’m not sure if I will be coming back.

I’ve lived in London, New York City, and Los Angeles- this coffee house is my favorite.

While visiting my dad in Roanoke for the last two weeks, I’ve spent every morning at this cafe. It is fantastic. The baristas seem chill and friendly. Try a hot latte with orange silk.

If you haven’t visited this coffee shop yet, what are you even doing?? This place is the best for just enjoying a drink, inside or outside. I’ve worked remotely from here as well no problem they have tons of seating upstairs and outside. Sometimes I’ve seen them have event days where they host some vendors or a food truck. Love love love the Sweet Donkey and will always support them, the staff is always cheerful and so kind and just seem generally happy to be here so I hope they’re paid a fair wage.

Looking around for places to go and see and happened upon this location. I had to go just because of the name. The place has 2 floors and fireplaces. We went in for tea because my friend felt a little under the weather. I took my own lemon in and they cut it for me and put honey in the tea. I had a latte, which was delightful. It is a coffee shop I would enjoy working from while enjoying the quaint decor. They staff were fabulous. Very happy I made the time to check it out.

Sweet spot. A home. Lovely cappuccino upstairs with the zoo. Nice light hand with a touch of cardamom syrup.

Love the coffee here! While I haven’t yet taken advantage of the cute and comfy looking areas to enjoy my coffee, that’s only bc of my schedule restrictions. They have both oat and almond milk options, which is key for me!

Good coffee. Ok atmosphere, I did feel a little too close to other tables. Staff was really nice. Wished they had later hours, closing at 7pm was a bit early for my liking. Didn’t try the food, none of the baked goods on display were labeled but looked delicious
